thinking about getting the jetta 1.8T - Click HERE for Original Thread

well thinkingh about getting a jetta 1.8T. My question is which years did the y come out in and what problems if any I should be concerned about and what are some basic bolt ons that work really good, and what should be a price that would be fair based on the year of the car

MrHeavyFoot
The 1.8T was first introduced in the Jetta in late 2000 MY. (or was it 2001?)
There have been 3 generations of the engine:
First: AWD - 150 HP (I forget torque 160 or 165 I think). Produced up to mid 2001.
Second: AWW - 2001.5. Same HP/torque numbers, but with "sport" turbo and some other changes to internals. Bascially, this engine has much more potential, although the factory programming didn't take advantage of it.
Third: AWP - 2002+. 180 HP and a similar increase it torque. Same hardware as AWW but programming updated to take advantage of it.

Best single power mod is a chip. Depending on the manufacturer, you can get 40-55 HP or so and 50-60 ft/lbs of torque (give or take).

VWVortex 1.8T FAQ

Not sure what price they're going for these days. You might want to check out newveedub.com. Its a Calgary based club for newer VW's. Might be some for sale on there.

Problems? Depending on the model year: window regulators, coil packs, mass airflow sensor (warrantee extended to 7 years), some reports of 2nd gear grind, diverter valve (on earlier chipped cars), brake light switch. I think that's all the biggies.

coil pack is the main one there
