Hey people,
I was considering getting some wireless networking thingys.
Anybody here run that? And is it worth it to get it right now?
Cheapest place I seen so far for wireless stuff is well... Future Shop...
$99.99 (after mail in rebate  ) for the wireless USB adapter, and for the Wireless Access point jigger is $119.99. Both LinkSys.
I thought it kinda' odd that Future Shop would have the cheapest price...
Doesn't seem many people sell LinkSys. I seen D-Link and 3Com, but none of that stuff is at a price like LinkSys.
Can anyone shed some light on this? |

Yeah the linksys system has 11 as max. I seen some other ones that are 11/22. I'm assuming that's sorta' like that 10/100? 22 is just for your local computers i suppose... I actually saw one that was max 1mb transfer rate.
I talked to some fellow at london drugs, and he said that the wireless system can really get interfered with easily. like your microwave would do it in for sure, water heater, cordless phones that use 2.4ghz... i guess it's safe to assume washers and dryers probably mess with it too huh?
I figure i'll just wait and see as well... |

You'll get 11MB in an ideal LAB situation...
When you bring that wireless into your home and when you take into account ALL the elctronics that will muck up your transmissions, you'll be looking at something similar to 5MB to 7MB to your machine.
But unless you move your machine around alot, or you have a laptop, wait for the prices to drop and the technology to get better. |

Has anyone see the powerline network systems yet? I know there are some very affordable systems now, and work really well, but I don't know if our home powerlines can handle it yet.
I know in europe they even use it for isp's now. I think our home powerlines are ok, but the city powerlines have not been updated to be able to do this yet.
At least if you go with this method you don't have to rewire you house with cat5 just to use the network, you really should already have a powerswitch everywhere :) |

Yeah, i heard about that from a co-worker of mine but didn't tell me what the stuff was called... but i did a search for powerline networking and i came up with this.
I wonder if this stuff is sold locally?

Saw on the news a few weeks ago about a hacker who drives around town and has the ability to hack wireless networks...
(so he says) Doesn't do anything harmful but sends some type of message or email to the owner that their wireless network is open.
If you run wireless, be sure to enable encryption, they come from the manufacturer with this feature disabled for some stupid reason. |
