need help to buy first didgital camera - Click HERE for Original Thread

Transporter
hi , i am going to buy my first digital camera all i know so far taht it has to be under $300 and it has to be bought form futurshop .. so what should i get what should i look for and what is best money spent.

qualifications:
-under $300
-from futurshop

energie
i don't know which model but Canon is suppose to be really good. U don't need a really high mega-pixel unless u r developing really big pics.

SplineZ
300bux? thats too bad

you're about 100bux off the Cannon A75, which is an excellent camera. 3.2MegaPixel..

Futureshop does carry the Cannon A60, which is the 2.0 MegaPixel version of the camera.. My money is on that one.

The one thing that I believe is a must is optical zoom. Digital zoom is like using the magnifying glass in "mspaint", you get all kinds of jaggies, and color problems. Optical Zoom is a far better solution

Compact flash media (and compatables) are pretty cheap, and you can get cards upto 8gigs in size (256meg being common place).. Its anoying when your takin pictures to have to stop and change medias cuz your full :)

i found quite collection of cameras with 3.0-3.2 mp for under 300 but on the futureshop site i could not find their optical zoom capablilities

TrevorK
Stay away from no-name brands, like Casio, etc.... I bought a Casio 4MP and it sucks in comparison to the Kodak I ended up buying.

Canon/Kodak/Olympus - you can't go wrong with those brands.

oldraven
My Minolta E323 Dimage (3.2mp) was just a hair over $300. It doesn't have a manual focus, but other than that, I couldn't be happier.

SplineZ
2MP
Only the Kodak CX7220, and Cannon A60 are worth while, and have optical zoom.. the HP has zoom, but a low end HP camera? please.

3+MP

Cannon A75 3x optical zoom.. but 100bux more than you want to spend.

Fuji A330, 3x optical zoom, 280bux.. Great camera. My dad has a fuji now, and its an awsome camera.. (6800Z i think)

Kodak CX7330, looks like a good camera, 3x optical zoom... 280bux

Olympus D-540, I havent heard too much about this one, Olympus cameras are bad on batteries ive read.. 280bux gets ya a camera with 3x optical zoom.

Pentax Optio30, 280bux, 3x optical zoom.. Pentax made great cameras in the past..

spend some time lookin at the camera reviews on dpreview.com and steves-digicams.com. See which one suites you the best.. Theres more than just mega pixels here. You need to take lense quality, LCD screen, etc into account. I'd just spend the extra 100bux for the Cannon A75, knowing that its the best in its class

POX
make shure it has 3x optical zoom, digital zoom is garbage

oldraven
And you don't want anything any lower than 3 mp. Most are around 3.1-3.2 these days anyway, so that won't be hard.

Is it for serious photography, or just point and shoot fun stuff?

Transporter
show me a $300 dollar camera with 3.0x optical zoom, i challenge you

i dunno it is justa camera so i can take pics for now.. but id on't wann buy something and the 6 weeks i find it to be of little value or quality to me

YOu can get refurbished Kodak 6430 - which has a high quality German made lense for under $300.....

oldraven
Yeah. Ebay might be a better idea than future shop. I got my Minolta XG-1 SLR for $100 with shipping. That's a camera that was probably worth $500 in the 70's, and a similarly equiped one now would be even more.

Why do you have to get it at Futureshop? I got mine at Best Buy, with a free Lenox printer/copier/scanner/fax.

240sx
i just bought a canon powershot sd100 for 340.00 2Xoptical zoom and 6.4 digital zoom from cosco. and im super happy with it

98 teg
ive got a olympus d540 from ruture shop for 268 tax in, its 3.2 pixel, has 3x optical zoom as wellas the digital zoom. NO problems with it,hard on batteries but other than that I like it

REFLUX
Canon A60/A75/A80

Transporter
ok i looked at the futureshop website and i did not find teh optical zoom listing can it be called something else

Transporter
Kodak EasyShare CX7330 3.1MP Digital Camera
Pentax Optio30 3.2MP Digital Camera
Olympus D-540 3.2MP Digital Camera
Fuji FinePix A330 3.2MP Digital Camera

the final four choices

is burst mode important?
what does Aperture Range mean because they are all different?
should i get something with the higest range or lowest range

and focus range
audio recording how important is that

anyone use any of tehse cameras or brands

i am going to the store to check how it feel in my hand and use of buttons

SplineZ
Its listed near hte bottom :)

"Focus Range" is pretty important.. with macro mode you want to be able to focus as close as possible to an object.. the fuji has 4", kodak is 5", the pentax is 1.5"

I just asked my dad which camera he'd choose, and he said he'd go for the olympus or pentax, and between those 2 probly the olympus. The kodak and Fuji have the fastest lense tho.. (.1 or .2). Lower the F Number the faster the lense. So at this point its pretty much which ever one you feel best with..

One other thing to consider - some may come with rechargable batteries/charger, others may not.

It'll be a minimum of $30 to get rechargable batteries/charger on top of the purchase price.

Oh - and McBain I believe has no GST on Pentax this month - 279.95 for the Optio you listed...

oldraven
Apperature is kind of tricky to explain, but I'll do my best. It's the opening that light inverts through. Light hits the lens, inverts (goes upside down) through an opening, and hits the film at the back, or optical sensor in digi. The larger your apperature, the more light gets through, and the quicker your shutter speed can get. A faster SS lets you take high speed photos (cars going by and birds flying), while a slower one lets you take lapsed photos, showing light streams, and in some cases, the longer the shutter is open, the more defined the image. This also changes with the ISO rating of your film (if you have an ISO setting).

The wider the apperature range the better. If it's a fixed apperature (one size) I'd go with the larger one. Having the ability to take faster images is more usefull than the ability to take lapsed images. Having the choice, however, is the best way to go.

Transporter
thanks for all your help i went with olympus d540 now on to some photograpers meet to learn the full meaning and usage off aperature and othe photo related words taht make no sense to me.
