top speed? - Click HERE for Original Thread

maxpayne126
anyone know where id be able to find the top speed of ones vehicle? i could do what i did last time and that was on the yellowhead but dont feel like doin it again. can i do it on a dyno? probably not...... and road suggestions? thanx!

edit: my car isnt exactly stock, with a few parts which i wanna try out.

Nightstalker
You could calculate the top speed based on gear ratios but thats just the theoretical top speed. The only real way to tell is to go and find a extreamly straight piece of road.. There is one between sherwood park and fort sask that works great.. but I am not sure how much it would be to close the road off and do it legally.. because I don't think you wana get clocked at over 200..

Find out if your car has a factory governer.. if it does then your "max factory speed" is going to be around 180 or so

Then take a pair of wire cutters and cut the wire going to your cruise control box from your VSS.. and you will likley no longer have cruise.. but you will also have no govener.

BZZRTN
i dont condone it but i had the pt up to 220 and i backed off...
i love no governer

Nightstalker
thats one fast mini van... and ya, speed kills yo.. :p

The civic pussied out around 215... but that was when it was stock.. I should try it again.. but if I get another ticket my insurance is going to bend me over big time.

If you do decide to take a run at the top speed, please make sure your car is up to the task. Decent tires, brakes and suspension. Also, don't blow past any other traffic, make sure you have enough open road that you don't have to pass anyone at closing speeds upwards of 100kph.

I've thought about this many times, and though I've never done it (the thought of losing my license scares the car enthusiast inside me) here is what I would do if I ever cared to find out.

Find a well paved road with wide shoulders that isn't well travelled. Go there on like a saturday morning nice and early. Preferably with field on either side (don't want Bambi to ruin your land speed record run). Get 3 FRS radios and two friends to join you. One friend goes to where you will start your run, and the other goes to where you will shut her down. Have your friends look out for any cars or planes/helicopters, and if they see ANYTHING get them to tell you to abort. Keep a radar detector in all 3 cars as well.

Also check your tire pressures and look over the tires very carefully (nails, bulges, cuts)

Like I said this is what I would do if I ever wanted to try top speed. This may seem a little excesive, but I feel if you're going to take a retarded chance, might as well up your odds of getting through without a hitch.

i did this befor at like 6am on my way to work in hanna.the company i worked for just repaved the 10km strech of highway it was a month old. and there was no one ever on it. i was late for work and i was flying 266km/h is the fastest i went probly had a lil bit more in but i just stoped there. :) sure was fun, but yes make sure you got good tires and your wheels are balanced and aligned befor :) dont need any highspeed shaking

When i had my old motor last year i ran it up to 245kph and it still had lots of room to go faster but i didn't know the exact condition of the motor so i let off.

SketchifisT
Mine was 255kph at an ungodly hour back from Chilliwack to Vancouver down a stretch. I think it was 2:30am or something and i saw only 1 other car. I dont suggest doing it, but do it at a wierd hour on a road YOU KNOW and that there is little to No traffic. Make sure its a road you know cause over 200kph little things that go wrong become big things ;)

If you want to just guess you speed just do what the other guy said look at your revs and ratio but thats not as much fun ;) I think every owner is allowed to unleash for a top speed at least once in a blue moon just make sure you are safe about it.

TrevorK
I think most passenger tires aren't rated for 200KM/H - and I hope you realize you're dead if one blows at 200KM/H....

i reliaze that. my speedometer stops at 180 anyways.

WookeysRX7
Thats why you get Z rated tires:bthumbup:

bigmack000
wousl any one eles be scared of the grocery getter civc hb goin 255 when it was only desinged to go like 160, 170 at most and isnt' made for speed? also what this so called suprise ?

WookeysRX7
Joel, Sketchifists(Sheldon) civic has full suspension and motor work done..... aerodynamicaly its not designed to go that fast but the suspension is:bthumbup:

Sheldon i'll see you next week and you better take me for a ride on the twisty road that goes from Deseption Pass to Anacortes. I wanna feel what a 200whp N/A civic is like:beer:

SketchifisT
Full internals are done on the engine swap of a GSR engine into a 92 civic hb. Intake , headers and Exhaust ( 2.5 all the way nicely bent so forth blah blah blah ill take a picture ) Full suspension from Eibach and Bilstein with Z rated top of the Line dunlop tires rims are a little old but do the trick they are strong to handle the turns. Yes not ment to go 255 but with it being Si version i have discs all around and GSR front brakes on the front so i come to a stop quick. Thats my suprise yet lookin at it you would never know

JustinL
Also remember to calculate your speed before you start bragging about it. Most spedometers are pretty optimistic and get even worse at high speeds. GPS will work too, but anyone who is reporting the speed off their dash is going to be off.

Adam @ Apex
We could do top speed runs on the dyno...its rated for 220 mph. Whatever that is converted to kph...something like 350 kph or so.

SplineZ
Definatly the safest way.. If your tire explodes you MIGHT not die :)

~220kph, my headlights poped up and i dont want to rip them off ;) besides i dont think the car would have enough power to overcome the drag at that point...

Interesting... Is there a program to simulate wind resistance on the dyno? I think the only input variables you would need is the frontal area of the car and the coeficient of drag.

My 4th gear ran out on your dyno at 128MPH (205 KPH). If my car had enough grunt ( I think it does) to run up to the redline in 5th, It would be making a true 167MPH (267 KPH).

I will lend you the fan I have in the bathroom for those bad days.
It will do!

Adam @ Apex
If you have some sort of formula or something then sure but as it sits it cant simulate wind resistance.

On a ummmmm private track I got stupid one day and wound the Z out. Now I have no idea how accurate the speedo is at higher speeds, but it's fairly accurate up to 140km/h(verified on GPS at 138km/h while reading off of 9 satellites).

Now keep in mind that it's extremely stupid that I did this with the tires I had on the car, and I have no plans to do this again any time soon, but the speedo was telling me I was at ~260km/h. I backed off there with the car still pulling and about 800rpm left before redline. I wouldn't doubt that the car would pull all the way to redline and about 280-285km/h.

One thing that I know for sure is that I love that turbo on the highway. Go to pass someone, drop to third and mat it. Before you know it you're at redline and 165km/h.

Matt, like my car, its not very appealing to the eye, its all about what lies beneath the hood.:D

Two things to keep in mind when driving beside Matt, or Myself. 1. I drive the flame throwing car.
2. Matt drives the car that sounds like it should have the flames. Honestly, it sounds like an airplane is about to land beside you when he lets off the gas:bthumbup:

ChromeDragon
Hopefully not for long, I'm going to try and find a muffler for the stupid thing this week!

bigmack000
