Buzzing in the trunk - Click HERE for Original Thread

oldraven
Ok, I just did some rewiring in the trunk. I added some new 220w Pioneer 3-way 6x9's, and my sub boxes from the supertruck. Now I've got this evil vibration back there. It's embarassing and sounds like shit outside. I mean, I laugh at these guys when they buzz by.

I'm going to try and locate the source and add some sort of material to kill it, but I've got a feeling the entire trunk lid may be vibing. Any sugestions?

ChromeDragon
Silicone, silicone and more silicone!

dynamat.... or just turn down the volume :p

oldraven
It's vibing with less volume than the stock speakers put out, so turning it down won't do much. I was thinking dynamat for the trunk. Thing is, I just got rid of about 60lbs of insulation and don't want to add a bunch more to it. (no, the insulation wasn't where the vibrations are coming from)

I've seen people spray in rockguard, and it was alright for sound protection (if you don't want to lay down dynamat/brown bread/whatever)

SketchifisT
dynamat it, Then take some double sided tap to the rip of your trunk lid and wear it connects seal it around with double sided tape. Make sure sub faces forward not backward, with subs facin backwards More airforce is hittin the Trunk. Limit rattle turn it towards you some peoplke think this cuts down on sound wutevs, Less rattle sounds better anyways you aer able to turn it up louder because you dont have rattle.

I got 2 JL audio comp 10's in my car with No rattle when i am inside and VERY small rattle outside and this is a the Civic chatter box so Just take some love and care and u should be fine. However they may always be some rattle just make it so u dont hear it over the sound

Mekanik22
Dynamat costs an arm, a leg, and your other arm too.

SketchifisT
In the end tho dynamat is the way to go if you want good sound. yes it is expensive but it does help all around. Its easy toget knock off stuff that does the trick as well. Just learn to also play hard bass at limited times. THe more bass you play the more rattle will come, Rattle will ALWAYS happen just have to limit it. So dont crank your bass all the way, just do it when you want to impress otherwise u will rattle more and more as time passes.

You can pickup furnace insulation from totem or something, its metalized on one side, and sticky on the other.. I believe a few people used it for sound dampning here.. its like 13bux for a large sheet.

I think I may have found the problem. The way Ford mounted the stock 6x9's is so ridiculous. A rubber strap that holds the speaker up against the bottom of the rear deck, behind the passenger's head. The Pioneers are a bit bigger than stock, so it rests against the hook and won't lie flush. I believe this is 90% of my problem. I'll take some rubber and brace them, to keep them from rattling around.

As for the subs, they're 6 1/2"s in a long enclusure, so I can't stand them up to face the front, or stack them. They're pointing up right now, but I'll see if mounting them on their sides, facing one another, will make a difference.

Thanks for the advice SplineZ. If these fixes don't work, I'll try that.

Altezza
thats diffrent 6 1/2's in a long enclosure like home theater style subs or car audio subs ?

oldraven
Like this. They're car audio, built to go behind the trucks bench. That's why they're so long and narrow.

Actually, now that you mention it, they do look like home theatre style stacks.

Hey thats cool man what ever does the job right ? love the Rox Shox sticker too hehe but yeah i have 2 10" kickers in the back of my car and my trunk rattles a bit if you face the subs outward so that when you open the trunk they are facing you then they will give you more thump in the car but more rattle if you point them the other way less rattle but less thump in the car so there are ups and downs but i would suggest adding a nice seal too the trunk lid so that it will stop the rattling but make sure its not a fat ass seal or you will have trouble closing it a thinn one will do. oh and dynamat is expensive but that will help in the long run when after a while things start getting loose in your car from the bass :D
