[nerd rant] Id is a great game ENGINE maker.. but they're games as of John Romero's departcher do NOT stand up to some of the other games made with the same engines.
And Carmack doesn't deny it either, he hates level design, and it shows.
Doom3 is a great engine, and many great games will come from it, but the game itself... naaaww :dunno: [/nerd rant]

Well, critics says this is the first Id game where they actually cared about the story...
Which is a bit strange, since it's the same story as the original doom. :dunno:

Yep, gotta agree with Genki there
The "horror" aspect of the game is truly beyond gross.
There are times where you just have to stop it just that hard to watch sometimes.
The Solo play storyline is great, but vs the original, the gameplay is alot slower and less action oriented, more geared towards the story and the horror component. The visuals on some levels is just downright disturbing.
There is more one way to get to the end of a level though, that is what makes the game interesting.
Here's a tip: if you see some items sitting in a darkly lit room, chances are, somethings going to jump out at you when you walk upto it. |

Thats the problem Andy, the game is so incredibly predictable. Walk into ridiculously dark room, pick up a new weapon and shoot all the guys who spawned out of nowhere. Switching between a wepaon and the flashlight is stupid as well, i'm sure he has a left hand, and if he has one of those, he could really use it to hold the light while he has a gun ready :dunno: There is little to no story to Doom 3, this is just a tech demo so id can sell the engine for big bucks.
I'll hold out for HL2, which will live up to the hype. |

| Games like this are being written more just for the base code than ever. More people played CS online than regular Halflife or TFC could ever dream of. They know people will create mods, and they are depending on that. |

I believe there are mods online where you can add a flashlight to every weapon, but I believe (al-la Chromedragon's opinion) that this is made for the modders out there like every other game out there.
The only reason why I'm still playing Ghost Recon is all the cool mods out there.
Don't expect too much from Halflife 2 either, I tried the Beta version and I wasn't too impressed. The puzzles are ok, the graphics are great, but I wasn't too pleased about it. Just another run of the mill game as far as I'm concerned.
I was just disgusted at the graphics of Doom 3, I mean, the original was slightly disturbing to a little kid, but this new one is horrifyingly real.
Saturday night I got to the room with gross oozing growths everywhere and the body embedded in the ceiling that screams when you enter and 4 two headed, wall crawling freaks come out of the ceiling.
Though to myself... eehhhyeah, that's enough for tonight.
The game does become predictable though that is very true. But so is every other game out there. Once you figure out the paradigm shift, the games are easy. |

It's not the modders guys, it's the other companies that will buy the rights to use the engine, CS was a fluke, so was Day of Defeat, all lucky enough to go from mod to game. Maybe thats how games will be made in the future, but until then large companies will continue to buy engines from guys like Carmack for high $$'s. |

wasnt the original doom series like that though? walk into a room with the key.. U know for SURE guys will be coming out of no where, or some wall will move exposing tons of guys.
If you ask me it stayed very true to the original series which is perfect. The only thing i wish they had was co-op mode, that was the best to play on the original series, especially the on the harder levels, like Plutonia Experiment. |

I absolutly love the game...i can only play in the dark thou gotta set the scene... I like doom 3 for its single player and the mods that will come from this "Next Generation Engine" are going to be insane(hopefully a Quake 4 Arena out of house!). I even read that this engine isnt even pushed to its full limits on todays highest systems they need next generation computers to really show the full package of carmacks insane engine.
PS for all those ppl who havent upgraded ur comp now is the time; get out and buy the best, you will need it. comp games are pushing the boundaries again.
And remember to only play Doom 3 at night and the soul cube is ur friend. |

| Hehe I wish I could play doom 3, but my Athlon 1000 and geforce 2 32 meg card wont handle anything new now. Plus only 256MB of ram doesnt help. Well scerw this, If I cant have doom 3, im going retro and playing the original doom and doom II along wiht C&C:Red Alert, those are all classic ;) |

Just bought Doom3 today from Staples. So far, I like the game. The graphics are wicked and there seems to be a "real" storyline compared to previous versions where I found myself just running around and shooting everything in sight.
I do find Doom3 relatively difficult to play, maybe I'm just no used to it yet. I find shooting the handgun difficult to properly aim. I try to aim at the zombie's heads but it seems to take too many bullets to take them down.
What is with the flashlight. You have to switch from flashlight to weapon and then you can't see shit in the dark. Stupid. You should have a flashlight mounted on the gun or something.
Anyways, got to get back to practicing cause I'm getting my ass kicked so far... |
