shaved door handles - Click HERE for Original Thread

Mekanik22
I was going to shave the door handles on my car but it seems like it's illegal, is that true? I was told by many different people that it's illegal because cops can't get to you if you crash and your dieing inside. My dad had a room mate also who got a ticket for "restricted access" or some shit. Can someone clarify please?

wow thats new to me..... shit they have a law for everything!

Somebody's blowing smoke up your a$$ soney...

Go HERE (from the stuck thread at the top of this section) for the vehicle equipment regulations. Nothing I can find in there implies you can't remove your doorhandles.

The fire department will always use an axe ofr the jaws of life anyways

Awsome! My door handles are coming off!

DeathBy240
Do it. It looks so sexy on 240's! Make sure you get it done at a capable shop, I have seen some pretty shitty shave jobs. If I had my car I would show you what a good job looks like. :D

Just a little advice that you may or may not be aware of, you will not be able to drag race if you shave your door handles. Of course I am assuming drag racing would interest you.

latched closed position.
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to a cargo door, sliding door,

part latching to the other part.
(3) Subsection (1) does not apply to a motor vehicle manufactured

What this refers to is the inside striker / latch assembly that actually holds the door closed. You will notice that if you don't close the door hard enough it will be latched but not entirely closed - this is considered the "Secondary Latched Closed Position". Being completely closed (body lines flush is considered the "Fully Latched Closed Position". This is similar to opening your hood - usually a release inside w/ a second release under the hood itself. Hope this explains the latch definition.

Jimbo's right.

The latching assembly is for safety reasons, and does not have anything to do with the release mechanism, aside from the obvious fact that you need to have one, but there is nothing to say that it has to be manually operated. Therefore, shaving the handles is not illegal.

Indeed! Most new cars these days lock the doors as soon as you break 20km/h automatically, so if you crash, the fire department would be using tools or the jaws to get in, anyway.

The raceways can set whatever rules they want, as it's their property. I can't say as I blame them if they ban shaved handles though. If something bad happened, such as a fire, the first person on the scene might not be able to get you out.

So wear a firesuit, and just wait longer. ;)

well it can't be illegal because the old school vipers dont have handles on the outside, so if you have your roof and windows on you have to unlock the window and then open the door from inside. and that car is obviously legal, so i imagine shaving your handles can't be illegal, but then again they could get you for 'stunting' im sure
