colder plugs - Click HERE for Original Thread

Transporter
i was totd to help reduce pinging i should try switching to colder plugs but which plugs do i make colder (i forgot to ask the person when i was there)

so anyone taht can provide some insight please say so thank you

Curtass
What octane gas are you running? I don't know much about plug temperature uses, but I do know that pinging usually caused by too low of octane in fuel and sometimes incorrect timing. Try using ocatane booster or something like that.

Transporter
i am running 92 and somethines 93 octane fuel

my car pings at warmer days soon er tahnit does on cold days or at night time some night i can go with zero pings..

apparently swtching to colder plugs will reduce pinging during teh warmer day or afternoon drives.. and thy do foul up abit taht is right tehre is a catch u will have to drive the car in not stop and go traffic to benefit from the plugs

some suggest go were to go complete 9 heat range all around less to remeber less confusing

Transporter
18 views later one person respong thanks curt i apprecate u trying to take stab at it i was running octance booster before but they don't make a whole point diffrence according to apex atht 7 points the claimis actully 0.7ponits more so 92.7 is what u get and not 99 octane fuel if that were the case then why would 103 octance fuel be so expensive

PraxRX7
I have never experienced pinging in my car even in the mountains at 38 degrees driving uphill at 5 psi boost :dunno:

Get it checked out by a mechanic would be my first suggestion, heck I dont even ping on the 89 octane =/

I know that my exhaust rattles and is kinda sounds like pinging, but its not...

I dunno man, something isnt set up right if ur pingin...

Colder plugs are supposed to always help with turbo cars. You should ask Travis at Apex to get you some.I'm waiting on mine.

Hey Transportor...

How many pounds of boost are you running?

Are you sure it is pinging or detonation? Our rotary engines
cannot take much of it. Be carefull. If you are running low boost
I doubt it is pinging.

Where do you get 93 octace as well?

I reccomend NOS racing formula for octane boost too!

best wishes!

WookeysRX7
I would also like to know where you are getting this 93 Octane gas:eek:

Transporter
MOHAWK ON 34 ST AND IGA RIGHT BY MCDONALDS

i hit on daily bases 8 psi

well i have constantly heard ticking when i push the car on hot days

P279
Ethanol-blended gas is crap...do not use Mohawk / Husky / etc with their ethanol-blended 93, 94, or other octane ratings.

Stick with 91 from Shell / Petro-Canada or 92 from Esso.

Chuck

Transporter
can u clarify why do u claim the blended stuff to be crap do u have any valid reason or u just stating personal opinion.

racer rx
Hey Transporter,

Ticking on hot days... I do not think it is detonation.
8 Pds of boost is not that much... I could be wrong with the older 7's though. Do you get ticking when you run less boost?

It should be happening more so during night time as with the cooler air you run a little leaner... I think your ticking is ignition related.

I had the same thing happen with my 7 and it was due to the factory plug wires.... crap! Changed them to Taylors and everything is fine.

If it was detonating your engine wouldn't be running now...
best of luck...

Hey Conroy... Any suggestions for Transporter?

now
sure sounds like detonation to me but i could be wrong, and
i do agree it should have broken apex seals by now if
it were but it sure sounds like it to me.
Hook up that safc and see if it shows ping

matt

Transporter
i am going to hook it up on sunday

more info on "ticking"

mainly third/fourth gear related past 4000/3500 rpms
(i have already swapped stock wire for accel 300+ wires)

racer rx. if you are not to busy do u want to come for a drive.

odd info on my car... if the gauge cluster light by the speedo doesn't light up i have problem with car running

if that light up and the one by the oil pressure doesn't light up i am good to go keep in mind i am talking about my interior instrumentation lights, odd eh!!

racer rx
Hi Transporter...

Have you tired running a little less boost...mind you 8 pds does not sound like much. And the ticking at that rpm... you haven't even got full boost yet.

Try running a little less boost and see if the noise is still there.

hope this helps,

ahh cool,, tahnks jack appreciate your info. how do i turn down my boost (taht is my baseline boost) all i do for now is drive gingerly and let the car build speed up slowly.. hopefull we will all see you at the show and shine

racer rx
RacerX is Paul Gilbert and Bruce Boulleit. They are both Guitar shredding monsters from the LA scene. They are like Eddie Van Halen on a massive amounts of cocaine...ophs a little off topic here...

Racer rx is me...jack with the blue FD from a few years ago...
12.13 @ 114 mph. retired... from injuries from Drag racing...
my pocketbook that is!

Transporter: What is the stock boost on the 2nd gen? How do you control your boost (boost controller or inserting pills in the wastgate line like the 3rd gens have)? Like Jack said lower your boost. First of all I would check if you are leaning the engine out. Either get a gauge that shows you (air/fuel gauge) that or take it to Apex modifed and put it on the dyno and get a wide band run done. That way you can see if you are starting to run lean. Also it will tell you if your ignition is working. Also try replacing your plugs with a new set of stockers. All this stuff I'm telling you will cost nothing compared to a new motor. Also I fill up my car at Husky and Mohack becasue it has more octane and it keeps the plugs from fouling. Good luck and keep us posted on the progress.

R.K.

Transporter
yeah taht is why i fill mine up at mohawk and husky more octane

so u think ymy aftermarket wire not working properly

stock boost on fc 90 s5 series is 8psi 8.6 max (fuel cut)

i already have a ported waste gate. my AFR accoring to apexi is average 12.9 and13.5 during boost and 10-11.9 during idle and if i can cruise just right 5th gear 3100rpms i get 14.6 (-12 vaccum)

(then u see light show also ..closed loop)

i will post result after dyno preceeding week. how do i test my spark plug wires? like check it with ohms meter or a volt meter or something.

(so jack u gonna come to car show)

the_saint
Run a plug one heat range colder.

I run all 9s in my FD, versus 7 leading and 9 trailing.

The FD chews them up, go through a set every 15k km. :(

I just ended up running copper 9s, as I replace them well before the benefit of running platinums (they don't last at all).

Log less knock with the 9s. all though they do foul a bit easier. Just need to get on the throttle to keep them clean.

Don't know anything else about FCs though :(
