How Much Do You Think My Car Is Worth? (LONG DESCRIPTION, PLEASE LOOK THOUGH, THANKS) - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey guys, I'll probably be selling my first gen RX-7 in fall this year. I was wondering what people think my car is worth as here in Saskatchewan first gens go for a lot less then they do in Alberta so if it was worth it I'd take it to Edmonton and sell it there.

The car is a 1985 RX-7 either S or GS. I don't know because the plate on the firewall that is supposed to say is in Japanese. My guess is it is just an S, but it does have some GS options that weren't available for the S. However, it doesn't have an electric radio antenna for instance, and my 85 RX-7 sales brochure says that this was a standard item on all trim levels, so I'm not sure, maybe someone could tell me how to figure it out from the VIN or something.

The car was bought by my dad in summer of 1998. He paid $4000for it. He would have been the second owner. The car was driven in winter only one year in 1997 by the first owner. Since we have had it the car has always been garaged during summer, and was stored in a garage last winter, but before that sat outside with a cover on it.

As far as we know it has the original engine, the 12a. The motor itself starts right up, runs okay, but the idle is a little rough and seems to flood when it is punched in third gear, other then that I think it is in good condition, probably a carb problem, but I'm not rotary mechanic either. The motor or anything else does not leak any oil or other fluids after I replaced the oil cooler "O" rings. The engine has never been overheated, the gearbox is fairly smooth, little hard to shift into second smoothly when the car is cold. The clutch is in decent shape, but would probably have to be replaced in a few years as we have had problems with the slave cylinder leaking from the "O" rings, but recently everything clutch wise is good.

The body and motor have 137,268 km on them right now but that would be probably 137,600 or so by the end of the year, plus it would be a little higher if driven to Edmonton to be sold. This car is not really driven anymore, as one of the reasons for selling it, last year it only got 2000 km put on it, and 500km of that was from driving it to this garage at my farm where we stored it over winter.

The interior is in really nice shape, it has cloth seats, they have no tears in the cloth, but one seat has a small crack in the vinyl back. The seats show normal wear, but nothing excessive. The carpet is in near mint condition, the back carpet is a little faded, but the carpet in front of the seats and everywhere else is in near show room conditon. The dash no absolutely no cracks in it. The stereo surround is cracked between the ashtray and bottom of the stereo, but I glued it and it is not every noticable. This car has NEVER been smoked in. The instrument cluster plastic has no cracks or scratches, and all the guages work, although something is wrong with the gas tank float and sometimes the fuel guage is not accurate.

The exterior is in pretty nice shape also, the paint is in immaculate condition, it has a nice pearly look to it after I detailed the exterior. However, the body itself has a few dings and dents in it, doors have about 2 noticble dents in them each. Any paint that has been chipped or damaged I am careful to touch up right away so nothing rusts. The windshield has no cracks in it, though it has about 5 chips in it, but nothing very noticable, usually you see them when washing the windshield and not when you are driving. ***NOTE: The front spolier and front of the fenders were damaged by the previous owner, drove down a driveway a little to fast and smucked the very ends of the fenders and for some reason the entire spolier/air dam is an marked up, and would have to be replaced if you wanted it to look as nice as the rest of the car. As for the fenders, I fixed where the paint as scraped off, but the fender damage isn't noticed unless you are looking for it. Both headlights go up and down with no problems and when down align perfect with the hood and surrounding areas. Both doors close like brand new and align perfect to the body. I should also mention the wheel wells against in where the rear store compartments are rusted, but I have fixed it, and there shouldn't be anymore problems with it.

The tires were bought in 1999, they are Bridestone Potenzas, on 13" rims, but I forget has wide they are (stock size for the S and GS) Since this car was never droven to much, the tires are still good. This car has steel wheels for some reason, actaully, this is the only RX-7 I've seen with them, but they are a Mazda wheel, anyway. The brakes were also done in 2000, and are still good. The air conditioning was not working when my dad bought this car, but we got it fixed and recharged just before the point when you couldn't use freeon (or however you spell it, the stuff that is bad for the ozone), anyway, so this air conditioning is cold, and is running freeon.

The steering is not very tight, also I should mention it doesn't have power steering, it has about 3/4 of an inch play in it and could not be very good at high speeds for long periods (like more then 160km+) The exhaust was replaced with OEM exhaust, but we found out this car is supposed to have 3 cats, ours only has 1 left, and the rest is just a striaght pipe. I don't know if it would pass an emission test, as I don't think Saskatchewan requires it, although I would think it would pass. Also, the rear hatch glass doesn't hold the glass up all the time, and I know from experience that when that glass closes on your head it is not every fun, however, I think you can replace those piston things that hold it up, we just have never seen a reason to because there is usually nothing back there.

If you want information on something not listed here, please ask me on the forum.

Some pictures of the car can be found here http://members.shaw.ca/subject2change/mazda . The car handles quite nice, doesn't have a ton of power or torque, but it really fun to drive and is actually pretty comfortable I find. I guess you'll find from the pictures the car is dover white, and it unfortunaetly has a red interior which may be a turn off to potential buyers. However, I thik hopefully anyway my description of the car is thorough enough and any one that reads this could tell me what I should expect to get for this car. I have seen them for around 2500 here, but they aren't as nice I don't think. In Alberta I've seen higher asking prices, but anyway, please tell me what you think my car is worth!

Thanks

P.S. I'm not selling yet, just wondering if it is worth it to bring to Edmonton and sell, or if I wouldn't get anymore there then in Saskatoon. Thanks again for response!!!

hey Jeff. Conroy here. I think that you need to realise that condition is everything when it comes to value. then after that timing. IE. fall. car is worth much less. Spring. value goes up. in the spring or early summer you should not have too much trouble getting 2500-3500 for your car. but it will have to find the buyer who realises what it is your selling. your car sounds very nice. good luck with selling it.
