In dash Dvd Players - Click HERE for Original Thread

DowntownFocus
Sorry if this has been asked before.

If your car is equiped with a in dash DVD player is it ok? I have heard mixed reviews about this. Some say they are illegal and some say its not. All DVD players will open and have some sort of back round that displays when driving. The players will only play a movie if instered and car is stopped with park brake on. So whats the deal?

Highway Traffic Act

Television in motor vehicles
60(1) No person shall drive on a highway any motor vehicle that is equipped with a television set.
(2) No person shall operate a television set in a motor vehicle
while the vehicle is on a highway.
(3) Notwithstanding subsections (1) and (2), a television set may
be located and operated in a motor coach or a holiday camper or a self-propelled mobile home if the driver of the motor vehicle
cannot by any means see the screen of the television set while the vehicle is in motion.

Yeah, they are illegal.... so ive heard

its also really easy to bypass the security feature so you can play movies while you drive....

Mekanik22
What about all these new Nissan minivans and Dodge minivans that have STOCK DVD players and screens?

penance
Those are right behind the front seats aren't they??

I think aslong as there isn't a visual player of anykind in the front seating area.... which could be a distraction to the driver, its fine..

Things like 'indash' dvd players or custom video screens built into the visors/steering wheel/dash would be considered illegal...

What about the literal definition of "television set"? I don't think it applies to little screens.

Technically, every police car is in violation of this same law.

They have a keyboard and a monitor in every car that allows them to access your license info, registration, criminal record, etc. It is mounted in the middle of the dash, clearly within the driver's view.

The Highway Traffic Act of Alberta does not define a 'television set', so we must resort to a dictionary to find out what it means (which is admissable in court):

Television: an electronic system of transmitting transient images of fixed or moving objects together with sound over a wire or through space by apparatus that converts light and sound into electrical waves and reconverts them into visible light rays and audible sound

Hell, that means that my low fuel indicator is illegal. So is my door-ajar warning, and even my stock car stereo. They all have visible light and sound.

Actually as of May 20th, 2003 the HTA no longer existed. The following is the wording as written in Section 75 of the Vehicle Equipment Regulations

A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle that is equipped with a video entertainment system if the driver can see the screen when the vehicle is moving.

I think this defines why police cars are still allowed to have the laptops for operational reasons - not entertainment (I hope anyway).

what about big navigational screens they can be pretty distracting as well?

You wouldn't wanna bust the ass of Mr. Bigman in his 120K dollar S-Class with his 5,000 dollar in-dash Navigation Screen. No no, you wanna get Mr. Riceboy in his Honda Civic with DVD in-dash.

I think its funny how they seem to be pretty specific about laws reguarding things like "incar screens" and stuff when it pertains to police work... having a laptop in there, etc..

but when it comes to things like mufflers they are so vague.

Obviously they had to rewrite the laws regarding 'in-car screens' because others have already fought a ticket and won based on what I suggested about it above, or variations of it.

I suspect that mufflers and pipes will need to be addressed in an amended law in the near future, too.

from my understanding and recent court cases about the indash dvd players.. is they are "legal" however most are equipped with a security device preventing "movies" being played while the car is in motion. however like anything else.. if there is prevention of something.. someone will find a way to bypass it.

the screens cant be illegal because of a great things called GPS
the only thing illegal is watching " MOVIES / VIDEO's " while in motion with the car.

lol, the so called security device is a ground wire you connect to your parking break, so only when the brake is on will the ground sigfnal work....but move that wire to any other ground on the car and voila!

they're illegal, but i can tell you when i had mine i was pulled over many times, never once did a cop ever realize what he was looking at, so it's illegal but don't even worry about it.

1991CRXsi
my friend gets pulled over all the time.. cause he's got a HID conversion kit on his mr2.. and his entire touch screen system is after market.. and everytime he gets pulled over.. the cops alwayz and i mean alwayz ask.. if he only runs the gps while in motion.. and not any kinda video playback.. the only thing illegal about the aftermarket screens is "playing" video's while in motion. otherwise it would be illegal to put gps into a car.. which its not.

This means that if the screen is back in the dash and you can't see it, then it's legal.

i don't think so, it says "motor vehicle that is equipped with a video entertainment system"

so i read that as: if the system has tha capability to play WHILE driving, and it's installed where the driver can see it, it's illegal, whether or not it's closed, off on, or what...

but i always closed mine when getting pulled over, and the cops never knew what it was, even though it had a big DVD icon on the front
