| Well I was lucky enough today to rent SRS: Street Racing Syndicate today, 1 day before its released to the public ( thats the bonus to working at a movie store ;). Well Put it this way, its sucks. The number 1 thing you need in a racing game is control and this game doenst have a bit of it. Not only do all the physics seemed screwed up ( yea, try braking, I had no idea you could go from 60-0 in a second! ) But the entire game control feels like a carton with messed up suspension. This game had all the right stuff ( though almost all the wings and mufflers where absolutely huge and made me think "rice" as soon as I saw them) but the control makes it fall below many expectations. Not only that, but in several cases, it appears the game makers had absolutly no idea WTF they were doing. An example is the nitrous. In the very first level you know what I mean. Not only can you use the nitrous for what seems like an eternity ( im not kidding, you just keep on it and it never seems to run out) but the actual nitrous seems to do little in acceleration ( besides make it look like your going fast by making it blurry, the same idea as in NFS: Underground ). All in all, Im terribly dissappointed in this game. So if you decdie to rent it, I hope you can work with the controls because I just couldnt stand them. |

or, you could stop modding your stupid systems and buy a computer and mod IT to play Xbox or Ps2 games...
setriously, the point of a consol system is to stay away from UPGRADING your system all the time.
and don't look at me like i'm some stupid copywrite nut, i have a modded ps2, but i use it for imported games. |
|

no the point of a console system is to not have to deal with computer bullshit, freezing, software/hardware conflicts and loong boot times are the main reasons console systems are so popular, turn it on and go, no screwin around.
why would i mod a PC to play xbox games? a PC capable of emulating XBOX games would cost at least twice the price as a box, not to mention no dobly 5.1, no sound blasting from your home entertainment system, no 36" HDTV, no COUCH! i could go on...
that's ass backwards man, the XBOX is cheap, and easy. If you call buying a single harddrive "upgrading all the time" then that's up to you. I call it a one time upgrade and never having to buy a game again. |

Then why are you contradicting yourself?
You say you want to have a more stable system, yet you start tinkering around with it, essentially setting yourself up for, as you put it "freezing and software/harware conflicts." You said it, though, This is exactly what makes PC gaming so hard for developers. Sure you put (THIS) hard drive in yours, maybe your buddy put a different one in his. Your essentially upgrading a PC at this point, it just happans to be in an fancy Xbox Case, which although now seems safe, will more then likely lead to an unstable platform, much like any PC. And whats worse, you don't usually get great support from Video Game companies for hardware problems when your intent is to no longer pay for games
Case in point, you're copying games, and i assume playing them? Fine... do you use Xbox live? You should it rocks... Ohhhhh wait, modded systems can be detected by Xbox live, and they kill your account... SHIT! that sux.
Sure there are mods that allow you to get by xbox live detection... FOR NOW... give it time, they'll "build a better idiot detector"... so you say, ok, i'll just mod again with whatever better mod there is available at that point... sure, great.. but how different is this from upgrading a PC again?

Whats to stop you from wanting a different hardrive, perhaps a faster one? maybe you'll want to upgrade the ram on the XB motherboard (i've heard stupider things being done)... if you've done one thing... you'll do another...and another.....and another...

I don't know about you, but hooking up a stereo, with whutever new dolby the kids have now,(6.1???) to a PC is... not ...freaking...tough... and re-routing your PC to a new HD TV is even less tough.. it usually involves the purcahse of one cord (some Tv's even come with the hardware required), which also eliminates yer couch argument, since you've essentially moved the PC into your "TV room". (Hell you can even get PC cards that have remotes! So you don't even have to get up OFF of said couch.)
The other problem that arises, however, is that only like 6 games for XB acctually have true HDTV support so really, wheres the argument?
As well, by hooking yer PC up as an entertainment center, you avoid having to buy a DVD player, you can even rig it up to record onto your computer, essentially making it a VCR with a HELL of a lot better quality recordings. (hell, you can build you're own fucking T!VO if you want! :D)
I will, however, conceed it wouldn't be as easy i make it sound to RUN XB games of your PC, but hey if you have the time to go tinkering with your XB, you could prolly do the same with a PC...thats just a guess though. :dunno:
And, yes, i'll point out the obvious contradiction in MY argument, that Xbox Live would be unusable for an XB game playing PC as well... but it's a null argument, because it's unplayble on both my idea and yers. :(
Regardless, it all comes down to opinion and what you are willing to tinker with... i suppose in a nutshell its no different then wanting to tune a Honda or Nissan or (insert car of choice)... some platforms are more reliable, some will work better in the end, some will make you look cooler to the fan boys :p
think about it... :p

lol, nerd fight...cont.
first of all you obviouslu don't really know what you're talking about, you would never upgrade the XB ram because games would never use, it would be completely pointless. There are no upgrades for the XBOX besides the HD, and using a bigger harddrive does not make it act like a computer. I've never had a single game freeze.
As far as wich harddrive to buy, if you have a chip it doesn't matter, anything new will work, if you have the soft-mod(free) like me you need to buy a lockable HD, so ya there's maybe 10minutes of research involved. In reality, just buy anything maxtor/seagate/WD and you're fine.
the whole point here is money, sure you can buy a 3ghz machine($$$) capable of emulating both XBOX and PS2, a digital sound card($$$) with a remote($$$), you can buy cables($$$) and split the audio out to goto your home entertainment centre, you can also buy wireless keyboard($$$) and mouse($$$), and controller($$$), and buy a high-end video card($$$) with TV out and play all the games on the TV. Tell me about it, that's what I was doing 3 YEARS ago! And after all that you still end up with something that is slow to start, freezes, is not portable whatsoever, and just isn't very fun for entertaining.
Or, you could buy an xbox for $199, mod it for free, and buy a hraddrive. You can now copy games in 5 minutes by pressing one button, you automatically have digital output, and even thouh most games don't suppoprt 5.1 just using the optical output KILLS analog, there's no comparison.
As far as video, there's a ton of games that support at least 480i, and they almost all "look" better with HD turned on, and they all take advantage of the component video's awesome colour display, but mainly it's the 36" tv and me on the couch, vs, a 19" monitor sitting upright in some chair...it's a no brainer for me!
And that's just the tip of the iceberg,
once you get into the homebrew software that's where the box really starts paying for itself, the coolest of them all is XBOX Media Centre, it streams ALL audio and video files from your computer and outputs them through your Home Stereo, you can browse just like you were on your computer. They sell boxes that do this, and they start at $200, you get it for free.
I don't know if you have alot of parties or people over, but if you do this thing can't be beat, it rocks, everyone can pick out tunes, they don't need to screw with the PC, it's awesome. People can download new songs on kazaa, while other people are playing tunes on the TV, when the download finishes on tyhe PC it's instantly available on the XBOX.
other cool FREE programs are
DVDx - dongle free DVD player, don't have to buy $50 dvd dongle
Emulators - play SNES, NES, Genesis, PS games on your xbox
Windows/Linux - If you think this is cool, then you can do, I dunno why you would though
i don't play live, but if I did I'd buy a 2nd used xbox, i mean $130? who cares...
so you guys do whatcha want, but I've never spent a better dolalr in my life, and no it won't play gt4, but if you're comlpaining about games being too expensive well there ya go.
btw - i'm not all about pirating and stealing peoles software, but I used to own like 15xbox games and they ALL got jacked, that's over a grand in games, so I decided I'll never buy another game I've paid my dues! |

i like your arguments, this is great debate...
the thing that bothers me with the later of your post is that you've esstially turned your XB INTO a media center PC.
...And then you've hooked it up to your PC... which seems to be where most of the "great" additions get all their power. The music streaming, the internet, etc.
I like the ideas, and don't get me wrong, i LOVE x-box, but i'd sooner hook a "stock" xbox, up to a really great Media Center PC with all the toys, big screen, stereo, what have you, that i can slowly updgrade and use for PC gaming as well :P (ahh yeah, totally forgot about the PC game argument).
oh well, good fight, like i said, and i think you agree... to each his own, right?
OH, but i do not like your no buying game argument because they were stolen...
i know it's petty crime at the worst, but camman, it's sad to say that your going to steal games because YOURS were stolen.
I think i'm gonna go break into 4 cars because mine was broken into. :dunno: |
|
|
| scooby_dooby |
well, here's the story, had a ps2 with about 6 games, I left for x-mas, my house got broken into and everything jacked, including my strat.
so I buy an xbox, get about 10 or 12 games, and I got jacked again, so at that point i just said fuck it, i'm not saying it's ok to steal cause i was stolen from, but that I have invested probably $2000 in games over the last few years so I don't feel TOO bad about stealing them. And besides I still pay the rental fees!
anyways, to each their own, gt4 looks killer, good thing my roommate has a ps2! |
