Not necessarily illegal. There's some people down east who have imported less than 15 year old cars from England and Belgium (and actually there's a guy in Edmonton who's done it, too).
It's one-at-a-time cases, a ton of paperwork and lots of meetings with government officials, but it can be done.
If this car is currently registered in Saskatchewan, then it's legal in Canada. The new owner doesn't have to worry about any of that. If I was going to buy it, I'd demand to see the current registration on the vehicle, and check the VIN number on the paperwork. |

Actually no it's not legal in Canada..... at least not for resale.
With the exception of a non-road legal race car, you can not sell vehicles that are less than 15 years old that YOU (an individual who meets special requirements) has imported.... IE: if you live overseas for a year and own a car for 6months, regardless to age with special permission from customs and tc it can come back as part of your personal effects, however you are not permitted to sell it (and there is a proper time as determined by these boards also).
And if it's a 1990 and it's forsale then there is something wrong in the picture! If it's a ~August or older produced 1989 Fairlady then it's all good. |

Actually no, that's not right. I have a friend right here in Edmonton, who has lived here for 20 years, who went to England, bought a Ford Sierra Cosworth 4X4 (something like a 1996 or 1997 model), brought it back to Edmonton, went through a gazillion hoops, got a North American legal VIN number on the car, and registered and licensed it for the street. He is perfectly entitled to drive the car on the streets of Edmonton, and he is perfectly entitled to sell the car, if he wants to.
It is not done the normal way, and it does require letters of approval from both the federal and provincial governments, but it CAN be done. And if you don't believe it, you can come see the car for yourself, in the west end of Edmonton. |

does that mean if some rich bastard moved to japan for like 2 years and owned the car for half of the time he could import it. IE: a newer skyline, supra, rx7, and other japanese cars........or am i just being super nub and an idiot? |

Yup.
And rexrally - see the TC and Customs websites, sit down and speak with a customs official about the matter. There are NO loopholes for Canadian citizens STILL LIVING in Canada. A foreign citizen coming back to canada is different though! |

I don't really care about what the website says. I have seen it done, right here in Edmonton, by a guy who has lived in Edmonton for the past 20 years. He imported a Ford Cosworth Sierra 4X4 from England (a 96 or 97 model, I can't recall), got a North American VIN for it legally, and has registered it for street use in Alberta. It is now recognized as no different than any other street car in Alberta, and he can sell it to anyone he chooses at any time.
I am re-issuing you the opportunity to come and see the car, right here in Edmonton, for yourself, meet the Edmontonian who owns it, talk to him about how he did it, and see the paperwork for yourself that proves that not only can it be done, but that he DID DO IT, and the car is now registered in Alberta for street use, and can be sold. |

Just because it's done, doesn't make it legit RexRally..... I've seen multiple skylines and such here over the past year (before they were officially legal based on the 15 year rule) but because we've seen it done... it makes it right.
I should run the redlight next time the guy in front of me does it too.... |

If it's done, RedBaron303, then IT'S DONE. How could it POSSIBLY BE not legit if he's gone through Transport Canada AND Alberta Transport, got the paperwork from them that says IT'S LEGIT???
You've got a great opinion on your side, but I've got proof, paperwork and an existing car on my side of the argument.
Again, for the THIRD time, I issue TO ANYONE the opportunity to come out and see this car right here in Edmonton. It can be done.
And by the way, RedBaron303, it's RexxRally, not RexRally.

Bring the car and the paperwork out. I'm interested to see how you can get away with breaking the law....
The Skylines and Fairlady Z's that are in town that are 90's and 91's aren't here legally but they're here... .can you explain to me why? Because you know all about this process and since they're here it MUST be legit.
There are plenty of ways around the law. Everyone knows this, it's not a difficult concept to think about and comprehend but getting around the law still does not make it right or legit or whatever, regardless as to that assloads of paperwork that may have been done.
I'm done with this argument. I don't think you can change my mind and nor will I change yours. I know it's wrong and you believe it's right so we're fighting for no reason. The car is here, it's being driven, and god help him if he gets in an accident with a knowledgable person that realizes there's something wrong with the car (as in it's not typical to see here). For the time being I hope it's getting driven and the guy's having fun with it. |

Why do you get all butt-hurt about this stuff whenever the subject of importing cars comes up? Does it hurt your business or maybe they all know something you dont? either way you sound like an idiot |

Okay riceboy.... why don't you just fuck off and go back to where you came from. "JDMJOSH1" you probably drive your girlfriends lil honda civic and are ricing it out as we speak. You piss me off quite a bit, never a positive or useful post anywhere... BTW - illegals don't affect business but it's a huge risk for insurance fraud and other bullshit if you really want your car too soon. *IF* you have some money and want a newer car I'll give you the contact info of a guy that can help you out... hell you'll have all the paperwork and everything and it'll be legit just for you, maybe you can get yourself and FD, NA1, S15, CTR, you won't have anything to worry about.

Since you figure I'm an asshole I'll live up to the part when replying to your posts! |

How are you breaking the law? Who cares if your finding loopholes, thats the way our law system works..
IF it can be done, like rexx says, well... I would do it in a second. |
