Big crackdown on whyte with vehicles with enlarged exhaust/loud stereos. I guess alot of bussiness down white have complained about this.
They also said they will crackdown on vehicle equpitment such as tint, lights etc. |

Yeah I just saw that, if your car is modded stay the hell away from whyte and its patroling revenue collectors unless you feel like paying some extra road tax. They are going for loud exhausts, enlarged tips, stereos, and any "illegal" mods that may catch the ticketer's discretionary eye.
RANT TIME!
I'd just like to say that this is perhaps one of the most hypocritical and ignorant things that I've ever seen in this city. The Whyte Ave businesses go all summer long trying to draw in the patio crowds with their own loud stereos, they want to encourage lots of cruising and general drunken stupidity out on the street because they're making lots of money off of it. But now that the season is at an end and all the patios are winding down it is suddenly unacceptable to cruise in the area because the noise level is offensive. Give me a f*cking break.
How short are the cops on the new helicopter payments anyway that they can reasonably justify this with a straight face after turning a blind eye all summer long. |

| So I guess most people going to the UC meets will have to take a different route to avoid getting a ticket. Fucking pigs. |
|
|
| Keith303 |
I bet if the exhaust was aftermarket, but the same/loudness as stock they would still give the ticket, cause anything thats bigger must have be louder and therefor illegal.
Now that this big crackdown is in order I bet they wont budge atall on the tickets, I bet they will be way more ignorant then they already are, not to mention all the cops down there are tryhards that are to inexperienced to do real police work and try and make aname for themselfs by seeing who can issue the most exhaust tickets...
Apperently the noise from the vehicles bounces off all the buildings and it gets magnified. Just another cash grab by the city if u ask me. |

Apparently they're targeting enlarged exhausts as one type of ticket (to get all of the tuner cars).... and a seperate ticket based on noise levels (to get all the harleys, musclecars)..... then they inspect the exterior to hand out any illegal modification tickets they can, to make us think twice about modifying our cars...
My favourite part of the whole exerpt on the news was the one cop telling the reporter how they don't use the decible readers because none have proven to be considerably accurate....
Then he goes on to say that they will be going by ear.... YEAH! cuz that'll be more accurate!! Hows that supposed to hold up in court... thats like being given a ticket by a cop who's just standing on the sidewalk (no radar detector) making rough guesses of peoples speed!?! |
|

| BLK_LBL |
im sure most of you guys are kinda biased towards the tuners, but I suggest taking a step back and looking at the big picture.
has anyone actually stood on the sidewalk at funky pickle (for example) as cars go by? There are so many jackasses squealing their tires, reving their engines, and driving around with their stereos cranked listening to stupid sounding music.
It just gets to a point where u have to draw the line somewhere.
I used to have a fart can on my car. its got like a 97hp engine. The best thing I ever did to my car was replace the fart can with a stock muffler (after having it for 2 years)
now at school I dont set off peoples alarms in the parkade. Now I can idle my car outside late night in the winter without people complaining. I can drive around without people hearing me 2 blocks away.
Theres a good performance loud, and theres a bad stupid loud. I've seen and heard many trucks with flowmasters or magnaflow catback systems and they sound MINT.. then theres the hicks with cherry bombs, and thrush mufflers that sound absolutely stupid.
same thing goes with imports. I've heard and riden in a typeR with a spoon exhaust, and it sounds soo good. not too loud at idle, but Vtec it sounds like all hell broke loose. theres also lots more imports ive seen/heard that sound great, not too loud. And of course, then theres the stupid people that just throw on a fart can and there yah go. sounds like shit, but hey it was cheap at canadian tire
Im just saying there is a FINE line between having a good well-toned performance exhaust, and having a vehicle thats just stupid obnoxiously loud.
and lately there are WAY to many stupid loud vehicles around. It just so happens that on the weekends they flock to whyte ave to drive up and down the avenue with their music loud and revving their engines. |

| I don't think you guys should be blaming the police officers themselves. I'm pretty sure they didn't get together and decide they wanted to be tightasses with modified cars. Someone or someones high up in the EPS decided this and then informed the cops that are on the street that they were gonna be doing this. The biggest problem i have is that these laws were made up by someone who knows nothing about cars and exhaust and expecting police officers who mostly also know nothing about the subject to try and enforce laws that they aren't equipped to accurately measure, aren't educated on, and aren't the least bit objective or sensible. Most police officers can't tell what is stock and non-stock-sized exhaust; only a hard-core enthusiast could tell on all vehicles. I have no problem with them issuing tickets for the obnoxiously loud cars out there (and there are a hell of alot these days) but they need an objective measurement to apply to everyone equally ie) decibal meters that work properly. Otherwise the law is pretty much just a witch-hunt. |

| Honestly, after just getting pulled over because of my exhaust, I still think its stupid. I have a full cat-back exhaust WITH an 18" res AND a cat AND a Borla Muffler. If you know about exhausts, you know this is going to be very quite. But lo and behold, my exhaust is still louder than stock, simply because its a V6 and not a 4 banger. Wanna know what the cop said to me? he goes, " and that exhaust of yours is illegal, its not stock"..... walks to the back of the car.... " nope, it isnt stock, hear my car? no, you cant". So really, any mods to your exhaust, and a cop could pull you over for it. If that guy had given me a ticket, you can bet your ass id see him in court for it. |

Why aren't they acting to deter car theives instead of busting the chops 16 year olds who have 3" exhausts? Why not throw a bit of that money they've already made from f*cking people over into a bait car program like they have in some cities. All kinds of theft related to cars dropped like bricks once the program was in effect for a while.

wow, I cant believe I just read that. are you competent enough to put your pants on the right way in the morning?
Any car equiped with an aftermarket exaust is ILLEGAL!!!
I've heard a grand am with a borla, its far from quiet.
You would see him in court, and you would be found quilty very fast, and you just gave that cop x number of OT hours, and missed your chance to work x amount of hours to pay off your ticket.
Acting to deter car theives... how do you plan they do that? best way to deter a car theif is to not give hte theif a reason to break into your car.
The report never said anything about increasing manpower on white ave, only giving them something else to do instead of eat donuts.
As someone said, stand on white ave for a while, you can hardly talk with every other car sounding like a 90db sewing machine, and then the fools thinking a $9000 stereo where you can only hear the bass is going to pick up chicks and make everyone think they are cool while reving their engines.
I'm glad they are cracking down. maybe white ave wont seem like such a dive at night now. |

| Id like to see this. There are very few people who live in Canada with a Borla exhaust on a GA. All you can hear is a nice low rumble at low rpms and a sound that rivals small block V8's at medium rpms with a sound close to stock at high rpms. That is also coupled with a CAI which would also make your car sound much meaner than without it. |

Rather than ticket the shit outta them, so instead of cruisin the strip for fun on the weekends (even tho they're lookin like complete losers).... they're all out street racing somewhere in town (possibly causing accidents/deaths)...

I don't frequent whyte ave, nor do I consider it a dive. Sir, I recommend getting a car to drive rather than somebody else's mom to ride, it will help you understand driving in the Edmonton area. If you think your idea is a good deterrent to thieves, you probably have nothing and live in a shack. The best way to deter people from breaking any law is to provide sufficient punishment. Fighting a ticket is the only way to get a fair trial. We canadians believe in innocent till proven guilty. Where are you from? |

Please don't bash other people when you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

well thats every aftermarket exhaust, I should have said thats not a factory replacment. but forgot to add that part.
I have heard a grand am with borla's, a res, and a cat. It was silver and had blue neon lights under it. I was beside you for a couple lights and behind you for a bit, and at every point of the rpm range, you are conciderably louder then a stock grand am.
I did sound not to bad, but it would never be mistaken for a V8.

i cant believe some high up officer thought it'd be nessisary to crack down on modified cars that arent doing anything wrong.. Speeding? Go for it.. Stunting? go for it.. illegal tint? go for it...
Just because a muffler/exhaust has a large tip on it, doesnt mean its modified.. nor loud.. It endangers no one, and does no harm.
besides.. how would your regular average joe cop going to know if your car came stock with a 2.5-3" exhaust from the factory?
My yellow car has 4 3" tips... from the factory.... is the cop going to know that ALL Fiero GT's, and 2m6's came with factory quad 3" tips? or that the 4cyls came with dual 3" tips? Or that the new STI's have 3" exhaust now too?
its rediculous...

noise violations are based off a DB rating, an exhaust violation is based off having a none factory exhaust.

LOL, there is an old adage that applies perfectly to you and it goes something like this.
"Better to remain silent and let the world think you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
Aftermarket exhausts are not illegal , and the city's laws are not based on any sort of DB rating. If you even bothered to read and understand the section of the VER you posted (61(1)) you would know this. :D |

Have you heard of a small block V8 with a stock exhuast? Hell if you want, just go out to the street and listen to a 5.0L, you will notice that they sound quite similar. Second, factor in also a CAI, which also makes the exhaust louder. Thats my .02 and I do believe thats how my car sounds, considering I drive it everyday. Also, high rpms are very close to stock (5K+), which is a great advantage because it doesnt get too loud at those rpms. |

I'm sorry, I don't feel a crack down of this form is needed. I honestly think they could be putting their manpower to better use.... maybe prevent street violence or something instead of handing out muffler tickets.... we all know that the oversized tip will kill someone.... when it shoots the cantaloupe out, but till then~!?
Maybe this will create more profit for the PD, maybe it will reduce "distraction" related deaths while driving.... maybe it will increase harassment to the import crowd (maybe the domestic guys running open headers?), who knows.
I heard about it on the weekend and knew 3 ppl that got pulled over (although the ones car is super loud) the others weren't. This is frustrating to me thinking of better ways they could use additional police on whyte vs how they've chosen to do it. I'll finish with saying, "thanks for stock exhaust" ;) |

| The cops are just looking to turn a quick profit. Photo radar, red-light cameras, exhaust tickets, noise violations, all are a way to turn a quick profit. What does photo-radar prevent? Nothing, I get a photo-ticket, I laugh. Wow, a tiny fine and no demerits, sweet. Red-light cameras, they aren't really preventing people from running redlights and I never knew redlight running was an issue in this city. The only time I ever see a redlight camera doing anything is in the winter when people can't stop and guess what? They get a redlight ticket. Exhaust, there isn't really a parameter to which police are following so they are given free-rein to ignore Harley's and trucks and musclecars and give shit to the import cars. Awesome! And noise violations, again no parameters so they are allowed to go nuts and do whatever the fuck they want. The cops will always try and turn a quick profit. So I just say fuck them, try and keep away as best as possible, and if I get a ticket, well thats the way lifes feeding em to me and you just have to go on with life. |

LOL, you have to love the blatant double standard eh. Cops are people too and they know that if they start shit with guys rolling colors then something bad is a lot more likely to happen to them than if they pick on some kids or law abiding enthusiasts who aren't going to come back later and find them. |

Holy crap was it bad last night. Not just Old Strath, all over town. Cops cops and more cops. I've driven Whitemud a million times and I've never seen cops hidden off to the side waiting to catch something. No radar either (my Cobra didn't make a sound) just eyeballing all the cars going by.
I thought I was in Fort Mac LOL. |

I dont know if this is a stupid or ignorant idea but:
What if most people decided to fight their tickets, would the courts be overflowing? If a cop had to show up for court so many times a week, would the EPS ease up on the ticketing? |
