Impact sockets NEEDED on an impact wrench? - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
So do you have to use impact sockets when using an impact wrench/gun? Or can the normal sockets handle it?

95IntegraRS
Normal sockets can handle it.

^^^ What he said.

What are you using the impact for, Terry?

maxpayne126
normal sockets can hold up to it for a period of time. if your goin to be using them all the time, the sockets will start to crack under the pressure and round themselves out.

95IntegraRS
Uh, not likely. If you knew anything about working with impacts you'd know this isn't the case. Depending on the size of the socket, they are varying thicknesses of the metal used. The chances of breaking them are very small using them on an impact as long as you aren't using a overly large impact on a small socket.

sweet, lifetime warranty baby!! :D

Chad: I'm thinking of gettin a compressor but dont know if I should shell out $60 just for metric sized impact sockets (normal size)...deep sockets is another $60...and so on for imperial sizes...

Lifetime warranty is great.

But what if it's Sunday @ 7pm, and you need to finish the engine swap for Monday morning?

CT's now closed, and you just snapped your ONLY 17mm socket. Your entire project is on hold (You need to put in an engine crossmember) now until you get another.

Sure it's a lifetime warranty, but is the inconvinience worth it?

Personally, I'd use my normal ones for the time being and keep an eye out for a set of used deep sockets (Craftsman/mastercraft/westward/etc..., lifetime warranty stuff). I've used normal sockets on my impact before without a problem because I didn't have the right size (Imperial) in my impact sockets...

Good point TrevorK

I'll keep that in mind :)

Ct now has impacts on sale(1/2 price beeyatch), aswell as those ratchet wrenches, i bought two regular sets and two of the swivel head sets...Sweet!

Yea, if your use those on the impact, dont expect to last long at all. They make make hairline cracks along the side, and before you know it they are expanding and just rounding off your bolts.

Also, cheap cheap impacts, the northern shop or princess auto. $10 a set

You might want to keep an eye on those rachet wrenches - they have about 4-5 different types (Stubbies, flex heads, etc, etc..) and they always come on sale for 50% off.... (In case you saw some that weren't on sale that you would rather have)

Yep, i just got the regular set, and a set of the flex heads(both maximum series. They make life so much easier. Also just picked up another set of impacts, they were $37.99 a set on sale for 11 pieces.

I'd recommend looking into the stubbies - they seem to come in handy a lot for myself.

REFLUX
alright so impact sockets are needed
gotcha

I'd rather stick with Craftsmen stuff...the lifetime warranty is very appealing
along with the readiness at any Sears store

Craftsman = Sears
Mastercraft = Canadian Tire
Westward = Bumper to Bumper

And if I recall Home Depot carries tools with a lifetime warranty as well. And I've never had problems returning any of those brands.

Of course, when I broke a snap on breaker bar, I got the gears when I went to get another...

Adam @ Apex
I've seen no impact sockets break when using them with an impact...my friend got 22 stiches from one that came apart.

Damn...did he do anything about it?
I.E. File a complaint to the company?

Adam @ Apex
shit...thats supposed to say "NON Impact sockets"

I dont think so...mainly negligence on his part. His hand was wrapped around it to steady it and it came apart....tore the crap out of his hand!!
