So there was this red 2000+ celica with a huge-ass "Z" on the hood, body kit, etc. I guess it's one of those celica's you can buy from Toyota dealership with all the stuff put on already.
I'm positive it's a GT. Doubt it's a GTS. Not that it matters.
Anyhow, I was already 10 over the speed limit and he started tailgating me and there was already a car in a lane beside me going at almost the same speed as me. I started to get frigging annoyed so I flashed my brake. He proceeded to switch over to the other lane, and starting tailgating the other car. As soon as he was beside me, I looked over and the driver looked over at me. I pretty much gave him a dirty look as I was annoyed at his behaviour.
Why was he tailgating me, I don't know? Wanted to race? He was late for a date?
So, was it wrong for me to flash my brake? |

So you're saying that I should speed up more to move over to the other lane even though the car in the other lane seems to be pacing me, which means I am now speeding even more at a risk of being caught by the cops? |

I think you did the right thing.
I hate blocking the road for other people, but if the guy beside me and myself end up going the same speed, there's nothing I can do about it.
The only time I change this is on the highway, I will always make sure someone who wants to pass can. |

Doubt it, for sure not on residential & smaller streets
I guess it could be done as courtesy on the smaller streets (if you're doing the 60km Max and others are doing 70...).
As for the inner city freeways...if you're doing 10 over the max already, I always figure if someone's in a rush they can go around me but if I'm blocking the only way to get past the traffic then I'd move.
[rant] LOL which reminds me, the other day I was heading westbound on the Whitemud at around midnight, in the far left lane, extremely sparse traffic and this dumb silver CRV/Rav4/Pilot/Econo-SUV etc starts tailgating me. There are no other cars within 2 blocks of us; he continues for about 2 exits and finally exits on 111St by Southgate and gives me a dirty look!
What an idiot, he tailgates the ONLY car on the highway just to exit on the OPPOSITE side of the Whitemud...he must've been from Ontario or BC....moron.[/rant] |

What road? Which lane were you in?
On city streets it really doesn't matter, but I absolutely hate the idiots out here who feel the need to create rolling roadblocks on the highways by pacing the person next to them. Tailgating sucks too, but I can't decide which is the lesser of the two evils without more info. :p |

I think he ment you could slow down to the limit, so the faster cars can pass you.
If someone is pacing beside me and someone wants to pass, i'll usually accelerate or slow down, giving them a way past.
I think you did the right thing flashing the brakes. |

Why does it have to be speed up? You have a car pacing you and an idiot tailgating you, why not slow down and let them go on to an eventual ticket? I do understand though, you weren't doing anything wrong and bozo was being a dick. It is fun to block them in but maybe just as dangerous. You did the right thing in flashing your brakes.

It's actually not a good idea to be driving beside someone, other than for passing them or them passing you. If for any reason, either of you need to swerve, or if you blow a tire, it's better if you don't have someone beside you.
If you tap the brakes, and the guy behind you takes that exact second to look at his CD player, he might run into the back of you. Granted, it won't be your fault. But, it will still be the time, and hassle of your car in the bodyshop, you trying to find some other wheels while it's in the shop. And the best you can hope for, is that your car will come out looking as good as it was before you tapped the brake pedal. At worst, it will be in worse condition than before.
And how will you feel if you get rear-ended, and get out of your car alone, and the guy behind you turns out to be 4 Asian-gang members with weapons in their hands? They're now pissed at you because "you caused them to run into you" (their opinion may be wrong, but it's still their opinion). There was a guy in a white Blazer who got involved with road rage with some gang members, and ended up dead right in front of Bonnie Doon mall. Anybody remember that one? Is it worth it to "teach them a lesson"? Is it any of our "jobs" to teach others how to drive?
Have you ever been late for something, and ended up behind grandpa in an Oldsmobile who just won't get out of your way? How mad were you then? So, when the situation is reversed, why not show some compassion for the other guy who's late, and just get out of the way?
If some retard who wants to go WAY over the speed limit comes up behind you, what harm will it do to just get out of their way? Really think about that question: what harm will it do you to just get out of their way? I LOVE to let guys who want to speed go in front of me. I love to let them attract the attention of the cops and let them get pulled over instead of me. I do it all the time on Highway 2. I call them my "guinea pigs".
The metal cocoon around us seems to empower us with bold feelings of power that we feel we need to use. Would you do the same thing if you were walking on the sidewalk and somebody was walking too close behind you? Would you stop suddenly in the middle of the sidewalk so that they walk into you from behind? Why do we feel the need to do it on the street, then? |
|
|
| silksheets |
When that situation comes up and your in a car you dont care about BRAKE CHECK!
just make sure your head is back into the seat already.
If I'm already going faster then the speed limit the guy behind me can go to hell.
On the highway I will always move out of the way, but if I'm in the city and in the lane I want to be in, then thats where I'm staying. |

| It doesn't matter how much of a hurry I'm in I never tailgate. I just feel really uncomfortable being too close to someone else on the road, no matter if they are in front or behind me. I was on edge riding down to Calgary with Chris last year in the Z. He would get 2 feet off someone's bumper while doing 140km/h and yell at them to get out of the way. I was just gritting my teeth waiting for someone to slam on the brakes and cause him to rear end them. |
|
|
| oldraven |
There's no time to tailgate. I flash these guys my brakes if they get too close. And you'd be surprised at how a nice staredown in the RVmirror gets the yuppies in the SUV's off your arse.
But DON'T contribute to the alberta road block. If you're in the left lane, and going the same speed as the guy in the right lane, either speed up, or slow down and get over. It's not the highway, and there are no traffic laws in the city to keep right, but it's just the damn code of the road. It's common sense. Keep right except to pass!
Now, if people are blocking you, just flash your lights. It's much more curteous than trying to climb up their tailpipe or barmpin the horn. |

Furthermore, intentially braking infront of somebody with no reason (ie: you're not trying to avoid hitting something infront of you), thereby causing them to hit you, is, providing there are witnesses, your fault...even if they hit you.
Fine line between driving defensively and being a jerk yourself.
If you've got somebody behind you AND you're in the left lane...move over (it is the law). If you're got somebody behind you and you're in the right lane, simply take your foot off the throttle and slow down slowly. Don't brake without reason!!! |

That's why you don't hit the brakes hard enough to slow down, just to flash your lights and force the guy to back off. |

What you did was just as ticketable as his following to close. Just back off the throttle. Lest you find a Dodge Ram driver that decides to do the latter (RAM) as opposed to the former (DODGE). |

If he doesnt realize he is too close he will taste a 44lb drop hitch.
Also if someone behind me is driving like a tard and tailgating and weaving in traffic and I brake test him and he hits me, wanna know what I'm going to say to the officer "I heard something bad in my tranny and in a panic I hit the brakes"
He's going to say "ok" and give a following to close violation to the guy that hit me. and his insurance will fix any damage done.
The law makes it clean that you should have room to stop in the event of an emergency. Even if the guy brake tests you, you are supposed to have enough room to stop. |

| Safest way to get rid of a tailgater is not to step on the brake this can cause u greif. I usally just turn on my headlights. The rear lights turn on so it looks like you hit the brake. Its funny to watch some bonehead tailgater hammer on his brakes while you pull away. You get the same affect with out no chance of getting hit. |
