| I start working downtown next week, and have to park in a back alley. Is my car going to get broken into? |

When my car got broken into in the lot right across the street from the downtown POLICE STATION, the cops didn't have much sympathy for me. The cop said "we park our cars right out back of our building, underneath surveillance cameras, and cops going in and out 24 hours a day, and our cars get broken into all the time".
Long and the short of it: your car's a target anywhere downtown. Get a detachable CD face, and the club that goes under the brake pedal and clean out everything of value from your car. Be absolutely vigilant about taking your CD face and using the club EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU LEAVE THE CAR. The steering wheel club is a joke, so don't even bother with one of those. |

Take the LRT to get downtown instead.
Parking is atrocious everywhere downtown. There is no 'free' parking anywhere, and parking in a back alley will get you a ticket or broken into.
If you can take the LRT to get downtown, it is quick and easy, and you won't have to worry about your car.

Where the police station is is one of the worst areas of downtown - the hotel across the street was well known for nightly altercations....
I've parked downtown for 4 months in my Talon in a "poorer" part of downtown (I was working at Canada Place, parked my car in a lot across from the Church and Porn Store - 95/96 st or so). The only thing that happened to my car was I had my headlight covers (Velcro'ed on) stolen.
That being said, come winter time and such it's a LOT nicer to take the LRT. I've parked my Z28 at Clariview station for ~6 months straight and never had a single problem (I parked on the street in front of the condo's though, not in the lot).
Just be smart - no matter where you park. Have a physical deterant (Flashing light for alarm, etc...), have you stereo out of view, have a detachable faceplate, leave nothing on the interior visable, etc, etc.... |

| i've been parking in downtown for 2 years, i park in those impark parking lots, my car hasn't been touched, just make sure u take anything visible inside out of the car. I have seen one old pathfinder broken into, and a ford explorer with its tires slashed. |

| oh and check on it as much as u can |

I also vote for taking the LRT, not only is it a worry to leave your car around downtown...FINDING parking is a pain and if you find it, it's expensive.
Good luck. |

When i worked downtown, i had my integra for 7 months parked on 103St and the avenue before japser ave, where Edmonton center is.
Although my car was the only car in the parking lot at night time, it never had anything happen to it. It was parked in a parking lot beside a impark parking lot. I had free parking as my mom worked for the company where i parked (ETL) |

Make sure you check around the area where you're going to park downtown, too. A difference of a block can mean a difference of $100 in monthly parking fees. Impark's really high, and the other guys (can't remember their name, the ones with the blue signs, Empire parking or something like that) are often right next to them, and a lot cheaper.
Also, you know the casino on 104Ave and 101st (or is it 102 st?). Well, the streets around it on the north side of it are all free parking. You have to get there before 8am to get a spot, but it's free, if you can do it. |

Oh, and my faceplate will be with me at all times too. I hope no one leaves there's under the seat!! |

Impark and the other one (With the blue signs) also sell parking with monthly passes, so you don't have to keep paying at the ticket booth thingy. |

Eventually though, your car will make a list of "unwanted" vehicles and you will be towed. ;) |

I'm having doubts that impark can afford to tow vehicles and pay the upfront costs to store the car on a lot...From now on all they will do is try to scare people into paying tickets, but in the end they have no way of actually collecting the money anymore. |

| Impark raises the price of their lots to make up for the people who don't pay the fines they were given...thats what one of the ticket checking guys told me when i complained when they raised the price. |

Remember, if you get out past after midnight, you can stay in some of the underground places for free :) (they work until midnight)
I park in Edm center east.. with the payfor parking, 650 a day, but Its worth it knowing my car is safe(er).... I also use the club, but its a steering wheel one.. some deterant is better than NONE at all..

i park in the manulife building downtown...a monthly pass there costs $198.00/month it's not cheap..but again it's heated and central to anywhere i need to go...i suggest tryign to get a montly pass somwehre downtown instead of parking on the street/illegally.... the ticket would be at least $50.00 and the risk of getting broken into is higher, and what could that cost.. $100 for a window, then there is labour, the items stolen, and the overall hassle.... the risks out weigh the cost of purchasing a monthly pass.. try impark because there is no heating or levels to park on...or find something further, but yet still close downtown so it will be cheaper
hope the information has been helpful:bthumbup: |
