legalitites with insuring rhd - Click HERE for Original Thread

hockey_fan59
my friend wants to get a 89 rhd mr2. he said he called ama (his insurance company) and they said they wouldnt insure any rhd cars. is this true?

Mustard
well i suppose technically any company can refuse to insure any vehicle they want (or don't want, however you wanna look at it)

However, the grounds for not insuring it simply because it is RHD seem pretty weak.

My suggestion would be to try anouther company (or even the SAME company but calling a different agent) and not even bother to mention that it's RHD... it shouldn't make a difference, you don't need any kind of special training by law to drive it, so it shouldn't be set on a different pedistel because of that.

It's the same with Standard vs. Automatic vehicles... there's no law saying you need to have a special license to drive one or the other, and you certainly don't specify it when you insure the car...

...

wow... that whole argument makes sense, and everything... look at me!!! :p

oh, btw, this is posted in the wrong section, admin, please move.

If your insurance company doesn't ask then you're not lieing to them or withholding information.

The fact that it's rhd is nothing, but remember the AW11's are north american MR2's in 89 while the SW20 started sales in North America later, I think around 1990/1991 so calling it an 89 if it's an 89 produced sw20 may not work unless you tell them it's imported from overseas.

Just be sure that you have it registered and insured under the proper id tags.... and most insurance company's have no problems insuring RHD if they're competent. ;)

i thought JDM vehicles have a different style of VIN from Canadian ones, is this true?

perhaps they have a conflict registering a JDm cars VIN?

po9rs4ch4e
you shouldn't, registries mentioned to me that all vehicles have a 14/16? digit VIN #, my bike only had 9 and it was a factory stamp :dunno: but it was still registered, you need insurance before registration anyhow. Unless AMA has taken some anti-jdm rhd policy, which you can request to see, then they can't refuse to insure it. However an agent acts on behalf of the company and perhaps just can't be bothered to worry about researching the car  they are pretty busy I guess "sorry, i'm not in a position to take on new clients" ahhh so you DON'T want my money? haha

socalsupra
a normal vin for a car is 17 digits, for a Japanese car its 11 digits, just tell them the vin number and thats it nothing else, they should take it then go to registrations r us and you already have insurance so all they have to do is register it and you can tell them it RHD from Japan it wont make a difference, theres a smart way and a stupid way to go aobout insuring a RHD car.

wrong.

no company HAS to sell you insurance... they can refuse any business they want, its the same as if you went into any store and were told you weren't alowed to shop there...

It's their loss in the long run, but it's 100% ok for them to refuse you insurance coverage through their company.
