I got a dB meter! - Click HERE for Original Thread

snugs
So I went down to Radio Shack last night and got me a dB meter because I figure there's no point in bitching about something if you don't have the proof to back up your whining. :D

The verdict:

At idle, about 10' behind my car, facing into the wind (its windy this morning), my car reads.......... 60dB. I'm going to double check later when its not so windy and I'm betting that at the proper distance (7.5m/25') without the wind it will read mid to low 50s or less. :)

....of course since I'm not an authorised tester this means absolutely nothing and is worth absolutely nothing, but its kind of nice to know. :p

Does the law state measurements to be taken at idle?

Bylaw 7255 states that 82dB is the max allowed while travelling at or under 60kph.

Since I cruise around in 5th or 6th gear at those speeds (premium ain't cheap :p) and my rpm is generally at, or slightly above idle I'd say that this is a reasonable starting point. To cover all bases though I'll be taking my car out and running it up to 60 to do a drive by, and also do some take off and rev tests as well so that I can honestly say whether my car does or doesn't violate the law. :)

I should point out that since I got my 61(1) ticket back in July I've added baffles to my exhaust and swapped out the performance muffler I had on there, so its a lot quieter now than it was. I love my car, but I'm not going to be stupid and stubborn. ;)

You changed your exhaust? I would have paid the ticket and left it on.

$90 for digital, $70 for analog. Heck, if you're just curious you could buy it, test your stuff, and then return it for a refund. Which is what I might do when I'm done. :D

energie
^^hahaha not a bad idea

Places where cops use db readers, the rule for getting an accurate reading is 10 feet from the muffler (waist height), tilted slightly towards the ground (direction of car).... and at a steady 3000rpm for 10seconds...

better yet... let people use it (that don't wanna buy one) for 5 bucks

I'm sure it'd pay for itself...

Cool. Considering how quickly sound levels drop off as you get farther away from the source its a little odd that the local bylaw calls for 25'. :dunno:

"704. In readings for offenses listed in Part 3 of this Bylaw, an approved device shall be operated no less than 7.5 meters from the source of the noise."

damn i wnat one so i can test my car when its doen lol. this is sweet be awesoem if you got pulled over for it and whipped out the db metter and tested the car, and it waslower then the max. then shoved that in the cops face. theres satisfaction rigth there!

Kamuri93
I know Ralphie at Certified Radio does db tests and his readings were good in court

I talked to the cops at the car show and they said they are working on getting decimeters for the patrol cars. They sure do want to meet those fuckin quotas....

energie
^^ that sucks.

Hehe I aksed the cops the exact same thing at the show. I also asked the definition of an "enlarged muffler" He said it was basically annything that looked like a coffee can fart pipe. I could barely keep my laughter in. I guess if you want, the best route to go for an exhaust is a factory looking muffler. I asked him about my Borla and he said those were fine as long as it doenst soudn too loud. Go figure :dunno:

Just want to double check this. For a cop to give you a 61(1) ticket they would need to measure your exhaust level, is this correct?

I had a little problem last night and now I have a few tickets to dispute, I just want to make sure that this is correct.

I've looked at the Vehicle Equipment Regulation and it does not state any of this information about the maximum dB level at all. Where would I find that?

Thanks in advance!

Urge to post "search" pic rising.... rising.....

:p

ok, the dB is from bylaw 7225
http://www.edmonton.ca/bylaws/C7255.doc

http://forums.780tuners.com/showthr...highlight=bylaw

This is the sticky part about this law. 61(1) does not define "excessive" and there is no definition of it in the traffic regs so if you choose to fight it you'll probably have to go to court and bring a solid argument. 7225 does allow for some discretion on the officers side, but you'd really have to nail him down on the sound levels and his perception there of.... which really shouldn't be too hard to do, you'd just have to keep asking him questions about sound volumes and related dB levels and he'll eventually screw up.

.....something else is that if you told the cop that you had changed the exhaust the CP will probably try to use that against you (even though its not illegal).

Good luck..... now that the weather is getting a bit better I'm counting down to my next street side interview.

LoL, dude I did search. After reading through about 20 exhaust threads I kept finding details about the violation, but nothing regarding the bylaw. I should be able to present the maximum dB level in my argument against that ticket. As for the enlarged outlet, all I can really argue is that I replaced the outlet with a smaller sized one and that I installed the muffler to quiet the car after I purchased it last year since it didn't actually have one at the time of purchase.

Supposedly I can get full discolsure of the officers notes because I don't think they actually measured and recorded the exhaust size. They kinda leaned down towards it when they came to hand me the tickets, but that's it; I saw no tape measure.

Anyhow, thanks for your help!

lol, you must have seriously pissed off the cop if he laid all that stuff on you. :p

What specifically were you charged with? :dunno:
