Remote Car Starter Options? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Xx D-MAN xX
I'm looking for one but unsure which to go with. Must be 2-way and have a long range.

My options are ultrastart, compustar, astrostar or polarstart.

Any recommendations?

Xcessive
BLACK WIDOW.....

Really long range
Lots of options
Built in relays
Good Warranty
Quality Unit
Low Pricing

PLUS
Starter and Alarm are two different units...therefore they can be mounted in different places to make your vehicle harder to steal.

We have been using these for 2 years and they are AWESOME... find less problems with these than with the Compustar.

My 2CENTS.....

Never heard of black widow.

Right now, I'm between compustar or ultra start. There is a $300 difference between the two so I'm uncertain which one to go with.

What kind of problems do the compustars have?

I think some of the problems people have can be related to who installed it.

My brother had his installed by International Stereo, and always had problems with the alarm portion...

95IntegraRS
International... that name always comes back to haunt people.

I'm leaning towards Decibals or Certified Radio. Like I said, there is a $300 difference between the two remote car starters that either shop offers.

95IntegraRS
Certified is a good choice. I would recommend FX Audio downtown near the Nissan dealership. They installed my car-starter and my mom's and they work prime, never had problems with either of them.

siopao
Darcy, for any alarm/starter work I'd go to Garage Works.

Talk to David, he can give you good info between the two brands.

I have use a starter/alarm combo from compustart my wifes 5 speed stang............ for 2 years

The first one installed died in the first month.....a bad brain...... had it swapped free of charge. No problems since.

It works really well.... good range. The paging sensor they install on the window is the dumbest thing ever. Don't ever get that hooked up. It would go off when ever it rained!!!

The only thing that surprised me was when the battery died........!!!! I couldn't shut off the alarm........... LOL ....

...........and I didn't know how to disable it without the controller....... SO I set the alarms off getting in the car ....SIRENS HOWLING... trying to get it to stop.... Luckily it finally stopped.

Plus there is a sequence to get it going after the ignition kill was set off............... I had to call someone to work me through it. A few quirks but I am sure not unique to compustart.

If I were to buy ANY unit now I would get them to show me how to disable it with no controller!!!!

I've got the CompuStar. The only issue I've ever had with it is that when the siren is going off and I am standing next to the car I have to back up about a foot in order for me to shut it off, although I can lock and unlock the doors when I'm standing right next to it :dunno: Other than that, works good just don't lose the remote.. they are pricy. I need a starter for my winter beater, and I think I'm gonna end up with another CompuStar in there as well.

scooby_dooby
lol, you don't have to back up 2 feet, it just doesn't let you disarm right away, when it hits the 3rd siren-type then you can turn it off, like 4 or 5 seconds

i have a compustar, it's realy good, the only problems i have are it going crazy in the rain, and I have to put it in valet mode,

btw, to disarm without the remote, i think you just turn the ignition on/off 5 times in a row quickly,

snugs
i've got a compustar, no complaints yet. :)

Thats what I was told as well, cept I still had trouble turning it off after it was on the 5th siren-type when I was close :dunno:

I just got a compustar installed at Garage Works and Eric did a great job. I got the FM 2-way and it's great. I haven't set mine off yet so I don't know about waiting until a certain siren type to turn it off but maybe. The range is good but like any AM or FM system depends where you are. I don't think you can be 5000 feet in side west ed and expect it to work as good as in a parking lot. I love the fact that you can check up on your car too. The remote has a query feature that shows you the what your car is doing. They only things I don't like about the remote is it's not back lit like the new AM remote is, so it's kinda a bitch to see what the remote says. Also the AM remote has the vibrate mode and a clock to help you out. Which is not a big deal cuz I think the new remote that EZ was talking about (2W900FMR) has all these freaturs. Also I have no idea what the "Auto" feature is suppose to do, it just makes the car arm and disarm every minute. Overall I really like my alarm and I will be getting the starter hooked up right away and it will be all good.

Hey EZ do you guys know if the 2W900FMR can be used with the 2WFMR unit, I want to get the new remote but only if it will work with my alarm.

the AUTO feature is a great sales gimmick for lazy people

like you said newtuner all the Auto feature does is arm and disarm or lock and unlock by itself with sensing the Compustar Remote on you or nearby

we do not advise using this feature for the simple reason that you may leave your ride unlock or disarm if you don't get a signal so in short don't be lazy just arm and disarm or loack and unlock your ride manual with the convience of a touch of a button on your Remote

Lastly Yes the new #2W900FMR will work as an optional piece with your 2WFMR unit

i have the compustar and have had absolutely no problems with it at all, once i figured out how to use it... they are great and i would recommend them to anyone...well worth the price:bthumbup:

I had my compustar installed at EZ last winter, great price, great install, very happy with the unit. When i was on the ski hill in jasper last spring, i forgot to lock my car up, i was on the lift, probably 1/2 mile away, i couldn't see my car but i pointed the remote towards the parking lot anyway and it locked up!! I was very impressed at that point.

MrMullet
Compustar seems to be a popular unit . Anyone have any trouble with them?

scooby_dooby
mine goes off all the time when it starts to rain, and I don't think there's a way to adjust the sensitivity, so anything loud will usually set it off,

and the range isn't all that great, it's impressive when you have a clear line of sight, but as soon as you get a couple concrete buildings in between it's probably good for like 500metres or something.

other than that it's awesome, the 5-speed remote start is awesome, most auto-starts you have to do some dumb process to arm a 5speed, but with the compustar you just take your key out and when you close your door the car shutf itself off and arms itself, pretty slick.

newtuner
For the compustars there is a way to change the sensitivity. There is a small box (kinda looks like a computer mouse) it is separate then the alarm brain it self. It goes from off then 1-10. This is a very sensitive alarm so you don't have to turn it too high 2-4 is pretty common. I have mine set at just under 7.5, all you have to do to get a warnning is try the door handel and letting it slam against the car. Even set this hight it hasn't gone off yet. I just got my first warning yesterday, somebody drove thru the parking lot with a loud exhaust. Depending where you got it install depends where your control box is, mine is on the steering coulum. hope this helps.

Xx D-MAN xX
I've decide to go with the compustar 2-way FM remote car starter (no alarm). I will be getting it installed by Eric at Garage Works.

I will let you know how it works out

DO NOT GO WITH ULTRASTART

I was looking at getting the compustar but then I was talked into the ultrastart. Had it for about a year now and it's probably worked properly for let's a month. Anyways I have had so many problems with it that the dealer I got it off it and installed it is buying me a compustar because the warranty is up on the ultra now. So whatever you do DO NOT BUY A ULTRASTART!!!!!!!!!!!
