technically the biggest legal size is what your car came with stock.
modifying beyond stock is illegal. Its stupid but its true.
Just dont put a huge tipped exhaust...go with a nice high flow exhaust, put in a resonator, and buy some good high-flow (not straight through) mufflers. Get the sound down to a semi-stock level and keep the tips small and the police wont bother you.
Drive around with a noisy car and huge exhaust tip and they will be more than happy to ticket you.
It sucks, I hate it, but its the sad reality of our communist...errr..democratic country. (I like to call it the democratic dictatorship). |

| a scilencer will go along way in keeping the noise levels down, and try keeping the rpm down and the trottle barley open, oh yeah don't rev your engine at cops anymore either, j/k man. tuff ticket but your best bet is to avoid whyte with a big fat exhaust. |

You should know better, and you should no the law before you install stuff on your car. I have a hard time feeling sorry for you. Just as a side note, My civic has a Greddy Evo2 Catback system.. its got a 115mm tip on it. Its life, you just have to deal.. its the same as getting a speeding ticket.. there is no one to blame but your self. take the ticket downtown and get it reduced, then get on with your life...
P.S. I am in a bitchy mood at the moment so your just getting that side of me.. But seriously this topic has come up about 3000 times on this board now. |

Well I myself have one of the loudest exhaust out there(just ask anyone who's been beside my car when it hits boost) but I've never been bothered by the cops. I've driven alongside cops at times, past them, behind and in front of them but I haven't been stopped yet. I suppose the main reason for that is that I drive sensibly when I know there are police around, but also my car doesn't have a massive exhaust tip. It's 3" straight pipe back from the muffler, but it's just mandrel bent steel, no shiny tips to attract the cop's attention.
I even drove up Whyte tonight at about 12:30am and the couple cops I drove by didn't even bat an eye. |

I agree Matt. My car sounds like a damn airplane, but I don't get hassled cause my muffler outlets are like a 1/4'' bigger than stock.

I was on Whyte Ave last night, saw a cavalier pulled over for fart-cannoning, so me being an asshole and all, I revved up on the cop. I also revved up on some other cops that were walking but they just looked at me like I was fucked. There have been more than a handful of times during meets or whatnot that I've revved up on cops at lights or while driving by them and they just look at me like I'm fucked. Maybe they like my exhaust or they think I am just plain retarded? |

It sucks but hope everyone learns just cause you throw a huge tip onto your exhaust doesn't mean you get the power from it , so dont bother. It draws attention.
Just get a proper exhaust done and leave it at that, i have 2.5 inch pipe all around and just have a really good sound and have no problems with cops even tho technically it is illegal |

You can put on whatever mufflers and piping you want as long as the sound level isn't too high and the tip remains stock diameter. :)
FWIW, I've made some major changes to control the noise of my car, but I still make sure to throw it in neutral and just coast by any cops I see at idle. No point in antagonizing them. :blink: |

I started my car the other day and thought my muffler had fallen off because of this loud growl that was shaking my whole car. I got out and walked around my car, popped the hood and couldn't find it...

I was driving home on whyte last nite, and i saw that black cavi too.. he should be ticketed.. that muffler wasnt being held on by ANYTHING.. it was kinda just hanging there.. look like one of those stupid sportbike type mufflers..

| Yea, your right. But no one should be persecuted for expressing themselves through their car and doing things the way they want. I think that the EPS and the politicians calling the shots are a bunch of Nazi's. I believe people who drive performance vehicles have a strong belief that the perfection of driving skill is a goal all motorists should strive for and thats why I believe we are the better drivers on the road. They should be giving tickets to the people that are constantly in accidents, caught drunk driving, histories of traffic abuse instead of pushing on the Import scene in general and discouraging our crowd. |

We were down on Whyte for dinner last night, none of the cars were loud, but a couple of bikes that went by shook the windows of the restaurant we were in... and not a cop to be seen. Well, that's not exactly true, when we were walking home a patrol car came flying down the middle of Whyte with its lights and siren on.... we figured they'd spotted a ricer a few miles away and were in hot pursuit. :p |

I wish you would read in the papers about a police crackdown on loud Harleys, or vehicles that have been in accidents with major damage that havent been repaired and they are still driving, or broken lights or vehicles you can obviously look at that arent safe to be on the road.
You can drive a vehicle as long as you want thats in any condition and unless you sell it and someone else has to get it insuranced and its over 10 uears old it never has to have an inspection done on it to stay on the road. Go after them.
Why is an enlarged exhaust such a huge hazard that every cop in edmonton has to be put on exhaust detail. No wonder no other crimes get solved.
As for the whyte ave issue. Me and the gf used to go down there to eat and have a few drinks and spend some money. Now with the crackdown and all the complaints from the business owners about the noise of cars, I won't go anywhere near there as I know I will get a ticket for my exhaust. Its not loud but it is enlarged. So now they are loosing my business over it. It is worth it, I guess only time will tell for them when people stop going down there. And isnt that why businesses locate there, cause of the high traffic??? And isnt that what makes whyte ave...whyte ave????

| the tickets drivers get arent mostly because of the parts, its because of how you drive...i drive by police on a daily basis i got a 4 inch tip. if i keep the RPM below 2500 it sounds very low. if your booting your car around at 4000 your gunna get nailed... |
