After searching the forum and internet as a whole it seems like one only gets a red light camera ticket if they actually enter the intersection on a red, not if the light turns red while clearing the intersection.
Anybody know (how do you know?) or know where to read more.
I am paranoid of red light cameras and usually lock up the breaks and come close to being rear ended when the light is any sorta yellow. But today I guess my timing was a little off and the light turned red right as I was going under it.
Thank you |

| It only goes off if you enter the intersection when the light is red. If you are already in the intersection and it turns red you are fine. If this wasn't the case everyone that would be turning left across traffic and waiting for people to go through the yellow would get a ticket as soon as the light turns red. And thats not illegal to do. |

| Do those red light camera's work on the traffic circle on St. Albert Trail north of Westmount? Are cars not permitted to turn right on reds? I've seen lots of cars and buses do that but yesterday I swear i saw a camera flash when someone turned right on the red light onto St. Albert Trail from 118 ave.?? |

I work in Transportation Engineering, and despite not being officially involved (it's a Police [Edmonton] / RCMP [Shewood Park] thing), I know how they work.
There are two wire loop sensors in the road, a couple of metres apart, right infront of the stop bar. IF the light is RED, and you CROSS both sensors, the camera will take your picture while crossing the sensors. It will take another picture of you in the intersection, the timing of which is determined by the speed at which you crossed the sensor loops. If you manage to stop (say half across the stop bar and into the crosswalk), the second picture will show that you stopped...ie: no ticket. If your car is in the intersection, ticket.
There is no ticket for crossing the loops while the lights are yellow, nor for that matter if you're in the intersection when it turns red.
For cameras at intersections where right turns are permitted, you must first come to a complete stop, then you're able to move on. The camera registers speed first, so if you're making a right turn with a speed of 20km/h, it's quite obvious to the people who go through the film rolls that you didn't stop. If however, you made your right turn at 5km/h, it's fairly obvious that you stopped (at some point on or near the loops) and a ticket will not be issued.
The flashes will occur whether a camera unit is in the housing or not. Edmonton's got some 20-30 locations, but only 6-10 cameras. Sherwood Park has 6 locations but only 2 cameras.

Don't be...and it's BRAKES, unless you're broke. ;) |
