Microsoft Windows Service Pack 2 (SP2) - Click HERE for Original Thread

masterv
So is anyone besides me having a nighmare after installing these updates? As of now, my IE does not open (the window opens but immediately closes), XP runs a LOT slower, and i still get an icon that states that I have updates to install but it runs the install halfway and stalls....

Xpnsve
Welcome to the world of Windows

My advice?

Don't update at all.

I install XP Pro, turn off auto updates and away I go!

Anonymoose
I agree, I've had a lot of problems since installing it. It took hours of searching but I've found work-arounds for most of the problems. Its just your typical Microsoft product.

midnite
i installed it a month ago right after reinstalling XP, i haven't had any problems yet..

REFLUX
yo man I found a link that makes installing that service pack super easy

How To: Windows SP2

:D

baker_jeff
Attaboy Reflux, seriously guys, just buy Macs, and all your crazy problems will go away, no fucked up updates, no viruses, 90% or more the same programs you need, better interface, blah blah blah.

macs are limited in their software but are pretty good if you're a graphics person :P

How do I turn off auto updates btw?

rage2
hehe it's funny...

Windows has bugs, so people beg for updates. MS becomes responsible, and updates that may break older versions of software to ensure security, and now it's too annoying.

Mac's aren't exactly bug free, but no virus coder is gonna write exploits for macs... I mean, how far can a virus spread between macs when there's so few Mac users out there? :dunno:

As a note, I've deployed XP SP2 on over 60 machines now without a single glitch other than educating people on the new pop up blocker. The only other big "new" thing is the firewall, that didn't affect our systems here because we disable firewalls internally, as I manage the single firewall for workstations going on the net.

True :)
Just my personal experiences = less trouble with Macs than PCs (on a very consistent measure)

macs just crash differently than PCs

to turn of the auto update feature
go to the system properties page and click on the autoupdate tab
on that page uncheck automatically update

and about your internet not working make sure that the built in firewall isn't on.

with sp2 it is either practically seemless or you will have bunch of issues there doesn't seem to be a middle ground with it

Yeah, they make a crashing noise when I throw them out the window :)

I have nothing against Mac's I just think they should lower the price down, it's getting to the point where Mac's no longer hold anything over PC's vice versa.

There's a 50 page XP SP2 tweak out there... My co-worker got a Asus laptop's boot time to drop from 1 minute 30 seconds down to about 45 second.

Bloody fast too.

I'll see if I can find it again.

dance_of_curse
id get a mac but then no counter strike:mad:

wow, did this get off topic fast...

in short MarsterV, yes, it killed my system too... big time. I can't get into anything microsoft based: Internet explorer, Outlook express, MSN, Microsoft Office, (here's the kicker), My Computer!, Network neighborhood, Control Panel!!

needless to say, i'll be rebuilding my system this week.

Back to the topic:

Head in to Internet Options from Control panel, go to the Advanced tab and UNCHECK the "Enable 3rd party brower extenions" box and reboot.

That should do it!

Not back of the topic:

I have an eMac(1gig), a Compaq Laptop(AMD 1500+), HP laptop(P 3 gig) and beige box desktop.

First of all, the Ipod rocks ass and Itunes is by far the best music archiver out there.

Second, I have had to bebuild the Mac, both OS-X and the guts (bad ram stick). its true that OS-9 was far more stable that Win ME but XP comes close to OS-X.

The "Macs are better for graphics" thing is a myth! 10 years ago the that was true because Macs graphic chip was built right on the mother board so they worked awsome! It was a mircal compared to the P1 300s. Now both Macs and PCs ues the same vid cards.

I'm not bad mouthing Macs, I rather like my eMac, I love how it looks looks and the Iphoto is great my but I think the price is to high. A few years ago the prices were comparable but PC prices keep dropping but Macs stayed the same.

One last point, if 90% of the uses 'switch', you would start to see all the flaws in OS-X real soon.

And what's with the silly 'laser tampon' mouse? I mean the Logitech in my hand has right, left click, 2 thumb buttons, chickable-side to side-wheel. Page up and page down butons and a extra progamable bottons. Get real let go of the one button thing Stevs Jobs!

Sorry for the rant.

It's got nothing to do with the video cards. Macs are better for graphics work because it's the defacto standard in the desktop publishing and print industry. It still is today.

You can still do most of the stuff on a windows PC, but send the completed files out and the Mac guys will complain about compatibility issues with fonts, layouts, etc. We struggle with it everyday at work sending out stuff to printers. There are workarounds, but you really can't beat a Mac for doing graphics work.

had the same problem with xp running slow but i found out it was becuase i had viruses. the service pack helps prevent these new viruses. i have norton and spyware blockares and still got them. any ways jus my two cents.
