Left Turns - Click HERE for Original Thread

I've heard from a lot of people that it's legal to do a left turn DURING a red light from a one way road into another one way road if safe. I'm thinking of the one way road you see after exiting Whitemud heading west at Southgate and turning south at the lights.

:dunno: Legal or illegal? I'm not going to do it until i get a clear answer...:p Too poor for a ticket right now.

Left onto a one way I've been told is legal, but on a few intersections there is a sign indicating no left's on a red light.

This is true. Like when you are turning off of the whitemud on 170st. south.

I do it all the time, unless otherwise posted.

Left on red from a one-way to a one-way is no different than a right on red at any other two-way to two-way intersection, and is perfectly legal...providing you do so a) when it is safe to do so, and b) turn into the left-most lane.

Futhermore, a quick search in this THREAD, stuck at the top of this section, would net you a link to the Use Of Highway & Rules Of Road Regs link, which would lead to Division 6 - Turns, and Section 26(4), which states:

(4) For the purpose of making a left turn with a vehicle from a one-way highway onto another one-way highway, the person driving the vehicle shall, unless a traffic control device otherwise directs or permits,

(a) drive the vehicle as closely as practicable to the left side of
the one-way highway where it enters the intersection,

(b) turn the vehicle to the left at the intersection, and

(c) leave the intersection on completing the turn by driving the
vehicle as closely as practicable to the left side of the other one-way highway entered.

yeah you can turn left onto 111th from the whitemud by southgate, i used to do it every morning to get my ass to school on time:bthumbup: I did it for 3 years and never got a ticket, i've even done it with my neighboor (who is a cop) in the car and he didn't say a thing.

The Highway Traffic Act - any registry will have it.

What about a Double red light - turning left at the Delta Hotel south on Cal Trail - for example? It doesn't say NO LEFT, but is that what the double red is for? I sometimes go and sometimes wait til the green...

MX5 Miata Guy
Double red (one above the other) is to preclude lefts during opposed straight-through green cycles (ie: you have a filter light but can't move the rest of the time...ala Calgary Trail / Gateway Boulevard / 23rd Ave)...which is to say, not the same as Calgary Trail at the hotel.

Glenn 328is
So then why is there a double red there??? :dunno:

MX5 Miata Guy
I've not noticed one...you're sure it's one over the other? For westbound to southbound, there are two left turn lanes, one that's come immediately off the Whitemud, while the other is up top, taking traffic from the 99 St, Gateway Boulevad, 106 St exit plus all northbound to westbound traffic that's come from Gateway Boulevard.

There is no sign...and I turn left there when safe to do so.

Glenn 328is
I drive that way twice per day. It has been a double red for years...

MX5 Miata Guy
Are we both sure we're talking of the same intersection? I'll have to have a look at all of them.

I am 100% sure that it's the same intersection.

MX5 Miata Guy
Yup, you're right...the westbound Whitemud Drive off-ramp to southbound Calgary Trail left turn has a double-red, whereas the interchange's westbound lanes to southbound Calgary Trail left turn has a single-red. But, neither has a sign prohibiting left on red...so that's why I guess the location didn't stick in my mind...as there's nothing to note.

So, going to my copy of the Basic License Driver's Handbook, Pg 79, Section D):
"One-way into a one-way: turn from the lane nearest the left-hand side of the road into the lane closest to the left-hand side. You may make this turn on a red light after you have come to a complete stop and it is safe to do so providing there are no signs prohibiting the turn. This also applies to dual lane turns."

As there is no sign...regardless of the signal (single or double), it's still a valid location to turn left on a red light.
