Hey Crew,
I'm looking into buying my S13 (since exchange is great right now) and I'm wondering what I should get. Basically I see the Blacktop and the Redtop have the same specs. but the Blacktop is newer...Please make some suggestions as to which of the two you'd advise and why. Don't just read this thread...reply!!! |

| no i'm talking strictly S13, there are two variations Blacktop which was used in 94-98Silvia and the Redtop S13 which was used in the 91-93 Silvia and 91-93 180SX. I'm just trying to figure out which of the two to buy and what is suggested in the S13, 240SX conversion. |

actually there is a black top s13 motor aswell.
but i know that the s14 blacktop has a larger turbo and its a newer motor so thats what i would go with. |

| I plan on joining the NECC, I just don't have the time to drop off the entry fee, plus there's a discrepancy between the website and the actual form for how much it is. What are your thoughts on which engine...I will join the NECC soon |

It all depends on your goals. I would say just go with a Redtop SR like most of us in the city have. They are the cheapest and since you are putting it in an S13 it will be the easiet to wire. Although if you are getting a shop to do the swap, they shouldnt have a problem if you choose an S14 blacktop SR20.
I dont know how common the S13 blacktop is. They were only put in the 94+ (Kouki) S13 180SX.
What is the price difference? There are lots of Canadian engine suppliers as well, I would buy one locally, rather than one from a faceless supplier many miles away.
Sign up with NECC, its free to go on the forums! And its only $20 to sign up as a full-fledged member, but you dont have to do that until you start coming to all the meets. |

DeathBy240:
There's a supplier I've found in Vancouver...they list the S13 blacktop and S13 red top as the same price...that's why I was wondering which is preferred all around...so far from your statement it looks like the redtop is more common...this months issue of Super Street suggests Blacktop for the swap...I'll look into getting on w/ the NECC forums and pay dues once I do meet up, so I can get some more imput. |

| What was the price? |
|
|
| j240 |
| Price for both is listed as $1549.00 USD for both...+MAF, Harness & Igniter chip $2000USD (Canadian site listing USD...go figure). Plus i have access to a truck so I don't have to pay for shipping. |

Thats roughly 2500 CAD. You will want to get the engie with everything included, it will save you many headaches. The only thing you dont need in your list is the MAF, if your car is an '89 or '90.
Check out jdmsource.ca i think the engines are cheaper, and they are much much closer. Do some research about them on beyond.ca
Good luck. |
|
|
| j240 |
| Well my car is 91, and what I gather from what your saying is that I'll need the MAF...the JDM Source.ca page doesn't list the engines as coming w/ the turbo..or is it just assumed (hence the DET)? |
|
|
| DeathBy240 |
| Yeah you will need the MAF, and they all come with turbos. Good thing is you wont need new powersteering lines or gauge cluster! |
|
|
| j240 |
| Yeah i'm getting pretty excited about it... just will have an extra few things to buy...such as the wiring harness (to dash) and some forged pistons and rods |
