I purchased a brand new desktop pc without an OS.
I used Miscrosoft Windows 2000 Profressional from work to load onto the desktop, in order to stay consistant if I have to do any work at home.
Anyways, during the loading of the OS, I got to a point where it was detecting hardware & devices (something like that). It seemed as though it was frozen, no mouse or keyboard functions. I tried re-booting the computer several times and re-started the set-up of the OS. Everytime it got to that point, it would freeze up again.
Eventually, I just left it alone to see if it was just taking along time to finish. Low and behold, it actually finished, I regained the mouse & keyboard functions and completed the set-up of the OS.
I loaded all the drivers that came with the desktop and all my personal/work software applications.
The only thing I have yet to do is get on the internet and log-on to the MS site and download any available updates.
Unfortunately, now I'm experiencing problems with the mouse & keyboard functions. When I start up the computer, I can enter my password in the login box and hit okay. Once MS is started up, I lose my mouse & keyboard function.
Did I royally screw something up during the installation of the OS? Is there any easy fix to this? Do I need to re-install MS Windows 2000?
Please help! My g/f is driving me nuts... |

Okay, my g/f found something out.
She said that if the pc is connected to an apex switchbox version 1.9.0 or earlier, that we may experience irradic mouse movement and the loss of keyboard functions.
That sounds exactly what my problem is...
So, what is the apex switchbox? How do I find out what version I have? How do I get a later version?
Is this a software or hardware issue?
Is this a result of my OS? |

I've never heard of an apex switchbox. but it sounds like it's a KVM switch, which lets you connect 2 computers to the same keyboard, monitor and mouse. You probably don't use something like that.
What kind of keyboard/mouse do you have? are they USB?

Ya, the apex switchbox isn't something I have.
The mouse is a udb microsoft optical mouse but has a ps/2 adapter.
The keyboard is just a standard ps/2 keyboard that came with the AMD 2600 + Gaming System that I bought from OEM Express.
Okay, with a little more research, it may have something to do with the BIOS.
Perhaps, the computers BIOS doesn't support MS windows 2000 professional.
It's weird, everything worked fine and now it doesn't. Under the device manager, the keyboard doesn't even show up... |

| try booting to safe mode and see if you can get any mouse and keyboard activity there, there might be a conflict withe the IRQs that the devices are using |

I've never seen a newer PC not support Windows 2000.
What you might want to do is scroll through the BIOS real quick and see if there are any keyboard settings in it.
A workaround may be using a USB keyboard.
What I don't like is obviously the keyboard DID work if you loaded a bunch of programs, and now it doesn't.... |

| What about going into the BIOS and changing it from the default of "Plug and Play OS - YES" to No? |

I can't boot in safe mode since I have absolutely no keyboard functions. I can't hit the F8 key to get into the set-up.
I noticed last night that I have no power to the keyboard. Nothing is lightened up.
I went to the device manager, clicked on keyboard and it's not recognized. There is no information displayed under the hardware tab.
So, it seems that the computer doesn't recognize the keyboard.
I'm going to try another keyboard to see if the keyboard is the culprit. If not, then I'll re-format the harddrive and re-install the OS. |

You can't hit F8 to go into safe mode? That means your keyboard isn't working long before Windows starts up. Can you hit Del to go into the BIOS setup?
Your keyboard port might be disconnected/bad connection. Check where the wires go and make sure they are thight.

And make sure it's plugged into the right port - since the mouse port is right above it. |

I'm not a complete moron...
Anyways, found out what the problem was. Eric, you were correct in saying that the keyboard wasn't working.
Infact, it's a bung keyboard. OEM Express said they would replace it or gives us cash for what is worth. Can you beleive it's only worth $2. No wonder it didn't f&$king work. Why would a computer store provide you with such a cheap piece of shit keyboard that probably never worked in the first place. I'm sooooo pissed off right now.
I just told them they can shove it up their a$$ and it wasn't worth my time to go to their store to exchange it for another $2 keyboard. I just went to Staples and picked up a really nice one...
I haven't had a great experience with OEM Express, both with their customer service or their products... |
