During university a couple of us went around the trail on a long weekend and decided to go there to see if all the stories were true (there's been whole shows on CBC about how fukt the place is, and how they run off visitors and new people).

Anyway, the road was really bad and every local we passed just glared at us... which was pretty weird... and then we came upon this half built building on the side of the cliff (the road runs along the coast) and stopped to look at it. The thing was a really odd sort of steel frame construction (just the frame, no walls). It just had a large single room (no posting for the walls) and it was on what looked like a cast in place cement slab, but sunk into the slab were these heavy tie downs that didn't look like any kind of lifting lug I've ever seen so I figure they must have been for something else.... and they were spaced so that if you layed down on the floor and spread your arms and legs (like a big X) they lined up perfectly with your wrists and ankles.

While we were there another couple of locals drove by in their 4x4s and gave us the evil eye so we got back in the car and tried to go farther but the road got so bad we had to turn back.

Didn't see any point in resurrecting an old unrelated thread, so I though I'd start a new one....

Anyway, you mean this place?

Remembered the thread when I saw the sign on the Cabot Trail, so I thought we'd head down and snap a few pics. Didn't see many locals, but the place did have a bit of a weird feel to it.

dance_of_curse

Wow, small world, but that's the place all right. We stood pretty much where you were and tried to figure out why it was laid out the way it was.... and being the idiot structural engineers we were we couldn't quite piece together the lay out or intended use.

A co-worker of my wife's is from Port Hawksbury and he mentioned that thay used to have a number of lookout points or something like that along the coast. The thing is, some of the construction looks like relatively recent materials (white plastic pipes for plumbing embedded in the floor, styrofoam insulation in the wall base). The construction also looks pretty shoddy, so i doubt it was a government/military facility.

My guess is some local (probably the same guy that wants to charge you a dollar to use the picnic area) thought he'd build some touristy lookout point and the government shut him down.

LOL, maybe it was supposed to be the Meat Cove Quiky Mart.

I honestly don't know what that thing is for and speculating about how that place is EVIL is way more fun than trying to make rational guesses! :D
