Does money make you happy? - Click HERE for Original Thread

In ANY form of interpretation: Does money make you happy?

In what ways does it make you happy or unhappy?
Pro/Con to money?

blown_mr2
I'm shallow. Money makes me VERY happy.

And whoever says money can't buy you happiness, doesn't have any. :D

Money is a means to an end.

DO you work 60 hours a week in a cubicle like a lab rat to have money in the bank? I don't think so. You do it so you can keep up with the Jones' who have a big house in suburbia with a new SUV land yacht in the driveway.

There's something so comforting about watching society marching in lockstep with each other....:(

We're all so inferior.

Money makes me warm dry and full, not happy. My wife makes me happy, as does watching my child grow in her belly.

I'm leaving this place and all its money next summer so I can be happy. I would rather scrape and smile than rake it in and complain all day.

Bad Egg
I vote for money. It does not make you happy, but it is extremely tough to be happy if you have none. I am not talking about money to "keep up with the Jones's", but the money you need to meet your needs.

If you have enough to meet your basic needs you can be happy, it's just a matter of attitude.

money makes me happy and greedy, i don't like sharing.

LIAR!!!!

Being warm, dry and full makes everybody happy.... or sleepy.... I can never remember which. :p

Like the saying goes, I'd rather be happy than rich..... but I'd really rather be happy and rich. :D

Inzane
I second the "means to an end" saying.

In today's world you NEED money to:
- travel places
- acculumate material posessions
- accomplish goals in life, whether they be education, sports/athletic, Entrepreneur-ship (is that a word?)
- maintain your health
etc.

Sure one could argue you don't NEED material posessions, but things like goals and travel and maintaining health would certainly factor in to most peoples happiness.

Lots of money makes me happy because then I don't have to worry about it.

Good thing I'm in the business of lots of money. LOL

Best thing I have heard all day.

I'm a broke student going into a field that pays little, but I am having a great time experiencing it.

its all in how you look at it.....

If NOT having money creates a situation where your NOT happy
(ie: inability to care for loved ones, basic human needs, etc.)

Then having money must facilitate happiness. (ie: ability to provide for yourself and loved ones.)

But then, you must also look at what makes you as an individual happy/unhappy. Does making other people happy make you happy? (ability to provide.....blah blah blah)

Right, so im in the middle of writing a paper. Just be glad I didnt drag everyone into psychological egoism, utilitarianism, and kantian ethics, you bunch of freakin hedonists...........

oh and yes, money makes me happy.....but does my decision pass the universalizability test?!?

tune in text week for the exciting conclusion.......

This is kinda tough question to answer...

I believe because ppl earn $$ to make their lives going, $$ makes themselves happy as spending it..(I doubt that just pile of money isn't really gonna make ppl happy as others stated...otherwise, I give ya millions of my creation money which never be varied, recognized or redeemed anywhere in this world to make ya happy:lol: )

Anyways, does spending money make ppl happy at all? I doubt it! Look at the ppl who get mad becaz they lost money on investment or gambling. They bet to make themselves happy and just the mission turned out unsuccessfully. Although the result was half expected, I have seen lots of ppl out there complaining about their lost... I guess that's why I stopped buying lottery one day:p

So I state that earning $$ and spending $$ to my successful contribution (or developments, improvements, accomplishments, any applicable happy situations) makes or brings happiness for me!:)

Well I turned down a job that would have had me clearing $100k/year because I knew I would despise it...not to mention it was cleaning up other peoples messes made by their greed.

Like Dave I'm entering a field where I won't ever get rich, but I'm quite confident it is something I will love doing.

POX
money doesnt make me happy, but it makes it easyer for be to be happy

a few exceptional posts I got off another forum that I posted the same topic/poll in:

quote:
see everyone that is listing how money makes them happy is just listing things for the here & now. I was told recently by someone that the best way to plan your life is to plan backwards. I.E. Picture yourself on your deathbed, and the people that are there with you, now go back & figure out a way to make that situation as good as it can be....When you are dying, does that 72" TV, or Bentley matter? I think not....

quote:
MONEY DOES NOT = Happiness

It may make it comfortable, but not make it happy. I have no bills except for house, utilities. I have a lot of money in the bank. I am still unhappy. There is still something missing. I don't know what it is. I just spent $1100 on a watch...but I still feel like poop. My little brother told me that I need a companion/mate. Maybe that's it...I don't know. But yeah, being well off doesn't mean shyt. *sigh*

quote:
Money is not happiness

Money is a tool that can help bring you happines, but too much of it can also mess you up and take over your life.

I see this in so many people that have money...the more they have, the more they want, and the more they give up on real happiness just to get more money. It's the people that have money that can't spare any to go out and buy a beer...it's the people that have money that won't take a day off, because a day off means so much money lost. It's the people that have money that work late hours because they can make so much more. It's these people that can't spare a ticket to hawaii because they could invest the money elsewhere.

Money can definately help you achieve happiness, but it can also mess you up so bad that your life won't be worth living. Donald Trump...the dude hasn't taken vaction in like 20 years. He can't....because if he does that means millions more that he could have made. He might be worth a billion more than me...but he sure as hell is not a billion times more happy than me, if he even is happy....

This is what makes me happy:
Friends, fun, freedom

As long as I have enough money to cover these, I'm all set. Having fun with friends on my personal yacht might be cool, but I don't think it would be worth the trouble, worry, degradation in quality of friends, and me being an asshole because I'd think I'm better than everybody.

quote:
The wealthiest Americans are the most likely to seek psychological counseling and receive prescription drugs for psychological disorders.

If money buys happiness then why do all of these people need shrinks and nerve pills to sleep at night? Why do their marriages fail at the same rate as everyone else? Why do they commit suicide at the same rate?

Money does not buy happiness.

Understanding and acceptance are the only things that will "buy" true happiness.

quote:
I cant say money makes me happy for material reasons. Actually i think money causes more pain/drama if anything. I can say i am in better moods when I know I dont have to worry about bills, etc... So it makes me happy when i have the money to live/survive. I have seen way too many really wealthy unhappy people. Money cant buy you happiness..

quote:
disagree with some of the statements made here.

I've been to both ends of the spectrum, having no money at all and having more than I could spend at a time.

Money makes some things in life easier, but it doesn't bring you happiness.

You could give me billions, or trillions of dollars, and take away my wife and I would miserable. Without her, there is no happiness regardless of my income or lack of.

Love is what makes you happy. Whether it's love of a person like a spouse, love of a family member, love of a friend or love of a pet.. that's what counts.

You can call me sappy if you want, but that is one thing in life I have definitely learned and figured out.

For instance, having loads of money is fun and great, but without somebody to share the time with, it becomes boring and lonely.

Yet, with no money, add a loved one and you can still be happy.

"I'm not happy. I'm not happy." Nobody's happy, ok!? Happiness comes in small doses folks. It's a cigarette, or a chocolate cookie, or a five second orgasm. That's it, ok! You cum, you eat the cookie, you smoke the butt, you go to sleep, you get up in the morning and go to fucking work, ok!? That is it! End of fucking list! "I'm just not happy." Shut the fuck up, allright? That's the name of my new book, "Shut the Fuck Up, by Doctor Denis Leary.
