XBOX or PS2 - Click HERE for Original Thread

I'm contemplating getting a game console to help me get thru Winter. :D

What are the pros and cons of each system?

Thanks.

Anonymoose
XBox: slightly better picture/sound, a few really good games but not a huge selection to choose from.

Playstation2: Huge selection of games

Atleast those are the 2 big arguments I've heard. I have a PS2 and I've played on an XBox. The technology difference isn't huge unless you've got them side-by-side.

joker
I have both, the xbox is faster, better graphics and better if you are going online. It will cost you about $80 a year for an Xbox live subscription but I think it is worth it.
PS2 is still a great machine, the biggest plus for me are the PS2 exclusive games such as Grand Theft(although it should be out for Xbox in a few months) Metal Gear and Gran Tourismo. Long load times does suck though. Once you buy the network adapter you can play online for free. I like th ePS2 controllers better too.
It depends what kind of games you like and if you are planning on getting online.

scooby_dooby
ps2 has 2 games that make it worth buying IMO: GT4 and GTA San Andreas

it has lots of games, but most of em are crap, i had a ps2, sold it, would never look back, except those 2 games

xbox has quite a few exlusive games too, halo 1&2, prince of persia 1&2, ninja gaiden, splinter cell, manhunt, star wars kotor 1&2, alot of really good games you can't get on ps, plus it comes with a HD and network card built in.

You have one for sale?? :D

I have both systems and if I had to choose one it would be the PS2. The XBOX boes have better graphics, but the system has maybe 5 good games, the PS2 has a much better library, enough so that the better graphics of the XBOX don't matter, and its not every game that has better graphics either.

Mustard
i get this question on a regular basis at work... so i'm gonna tell you what i tell everyone else... then i'm going to write an essay to explain why.

First, you need both.
That is all. :p

Essentially the systems are equal in value, and it all comes down to prefrence, but to TRUELY be happy, you need both. :)

Here's some things to conider: (NERD ALERT!!! get ready to do some read'n folks!)

Xbox
-Best hardware on the market, fastest load times and has an easier time pumping out better visuals then the PS2, on average (but really this comes down to the game, cause i can certainly show you some PS2 games that look better then other Xbox ones)
-4 Player action - The system has 4 ports... thats just ASKING for 4 player games.
-Great online, acctually, this is an understatment, it's the ONLY way to play online, Xbox live RULES and is worth EVERY GOD DAMNED PENNY!
-Good line-up of exclusive titles (ie. Halo, Star wars KOTOR), but the games mentioned by Scooby, about half are also on ps2. HOWEVER, one thing to consider.. if given the choice (and i always am) i usually choose to play the xbox version.
-Hardrive, unfrotunetly this is a blessing and a curse, and most people don't realize this right away. The hardrive is nice cause it's huge, and it keeps your files in order and you don't have to worry about running out of room anytime soon. HOWEVER, the hardrive is very NOT PORTABLE: unlike a memory card the hardrive isn't going anywhere, so if you want to tranfer a file to a different xbox to play your character with a freind at his house, have fucking fun, it aint' happeneing. "SO?" you say, "buy a memory card," with a smug look on yer face :D EHHGG!! Wrong, the memory car offered by MS is useless, as are any of the third party ones. It holds dick all, mainly cause it's too small, but mostly because 90% of the games don't even allow you to save PARTS of game files (ie. a single season in hockey, even though you have the ability to save 20 times more then any ps2 game allows). So yer stuck.
-DVD movies are playable but only AFTER you purchase the DVD remote. IT's unfortune, but remember you just saved some money NOT buying a memory card :P
-Has the smaller library, but only cause it's younger, a lot and i mean a LOT of new games are multi-consol releases, so your ok on the big ones, the non-sport or movie game relases.
-The system leans more towards action gamers, lots of FPS and Action games, the RPG'er should look elsewhere. And not that it matters to you, but kids games are few and far between
-Consider this as well: we get xboxs in for repair far less then PS2's, but when they DO come in they need big time expensive repairs, that usually make the owner buy a new system instead. And remember that useless unportable Hardrive we mentioned earlier... yeah it's stuck in the busted XBox... you get to start all your save files all over again.. yay! (no, you can't link two xboxs and transfer files ;) ) and to some people this is worth twice the cost of the xbox to fix, and they will PAY more money to fix rather then lose the save files.
-So far, the Xbox has been the more expensive of the two systems. New sales are about the same, give or take, but the used xboxs are worth more then a used ps2. As well in new sales the Xbox has a few bundles that include 2 games (and not bad games either) for a reasonable price...Ps2, no.
-Cost of games is simlar for the most part, but you can certainly tell which titles are MS funded cause they are substatially cheaper. But the overall cost of games on any system is certianly declining, which is nice. (expect to pay 60-70 for a new game now, ratehr then 70 to 80 before)

PS2
-The hardware, although older, is still pretty impressive and does the job "most" of the time. Certainly multi platform released games will naturally look better on xbox though not ALWAYS true), they certainly don't look TERRIBLE on PS2, just not as good as their twin brother :P
-DVD movies right out of the box! AND, the newer systems (ie less then 1.5 years old) have progressive scan technology, which is nice for those of you that spent countless dollars on that fancy TV.
-PS2 stuff just seem like better quality, the controllers just work better, the cables just seem to fit better, the system is smaller by a long shot, and i dunno, they just don't cheap out on stuff...
EXCEPT FOR LASERS!!! :P Unfortunely, sony, as with ANY of their CD or DVD products, makes shitty ass lasers. These two part DVD/CD lasers in the ps2's are the worst! They constantly get dirty and need to be cleaned or realligned or what have you. We get an average of 2 ps2's per week for repair (which 9/10 times just needs to be cleaned) but the repair is ALWAYS cheaper then an xbox repair of ANY kind.
-The memory cards are nicer then the Hardrive in a few ways, i mentioned above the main ones, and i've certainly been able to fit the last 2 years worth of files i want to keep on one card... you have to have one, yes, but you just saved money by NOT buying a remote to watch DVD's. :p
-The library is bigger, and always will be, and not just cause it's older. Sony is Japanese, and the Japanese video game market is 100 million bajillion times larger then Europe, and North America combined. There is TONS of support for SONY in japan, and very little for Microsoft... Xbox has lots of games mainly cause MS has lots of money. Developers will be making a game for ps2, and MS will come by and say "here, have tons of money, and put it on xbox...oh and make sure it looks nicer and has online play on out system, not theirs, while yer at it."
-Rpg gamers may as well stop reading here, if you want games, just buy a ps2 and never look back. It's the only way to go. PS2 is good for adventure and action games of that type. FPS's just don't seem to do as well on ps2, it's weird, but true.
-The exclusive titles are about the same as well, Gran turismo and Metal gear being the big ones. Better/more kids games, which you don't care about.
-The system needs 4 player support, BAD, you can get a multitap, which is nice, but try and find a game that uses it!
-The new PS2 system, the really flat one, is really super sleek and super cool! ...except for the part where it's NOT! :p Most people don't look at this long enough to realize it. The system is indeed slimmer by about half and looks like it will fit nicely in smaller places in your TV stand. WRONG! Guess what? they thought they'd improve things by not having the CD tray anymore, making it top loading... yes, TOP loading, like the old PS... which means you now must put it in a place where you can get to the top of it to put games in... making the total usuable area of the machine almost DOUBLE that of the old one! Still, the old one is tonnes smaller then an xbox :P
-Normally you will be able to find a ps2 cheaper then an xbox. Don't expect massive sales, but it's worth mentioning. Still the lack of decent bundle packs is kinda dumb. However bundle packs force you to buy certain games which kinda sucks too.
-Game prices are similar too, but maybe a little more expensive on the whole, mainly cause a lot of the games are japanese smaller companies and don't have huge support from sony.

So you have some decisions to make. Like i said, you won't be dissapointed with either, i think, but to truely be happy you simply have to own both. Sorry :(

Hope that helps you out man, you can't have anyone make the decission for you, but the facts can make sure you make a good one.

And that concludes our Nerd Alert.

what? almost every QUALITY game on ps2 is on the xbox too, then there's at least a good 20 really good games only for xbox,

name me some good games on ps2 that aren't on xbox, besides grand turismo, and grand theft. seriously go to gamespot and look at the top 10 for both systems, xbox is all quality pimp games, and the ps2 is a bunch of games you never even heard of.

i dunno like i said i had both, the ps2 had lots of games but they were mostly quantity rather than quality, and it seemed almost every good game comes out for both,

you miss out on ALOT of good games if you don't have an xbox, while the quality "only for PS2 title" are few and far between, at leas tthat's how I felt when i owned the ps2

I should have been more specific, I meant 5 exclusive games.

As for that list well GT4, MGS3, GTA:SA, SOCOM. Hot Shots Golf 4, Final Fantasy series, Ace Combat 5, DMC,Killzone, Silent hill, The Getaway.... honestly I could go on forever. I like the XBOX but IMO the best buy is the PS2

Well to fair there is probably 4 times as many PS2's in the city then XBOX's.

Either way you really can't go wrong.

stealth
Sunil xbox is better for movies and to store music on the HD.

I recentyl traded my friend my xbox for his 3 month old ps2.

The reason is the same as yours.

To get me through winter. I wanted GTA: San Andreas and Grand Turismo 4.

Thats the only reason really why.

I never touched my xbox in 10 months, because no games interested me.

Mustard
the list you took of top games there from Gamespot was the top games clicked on or linked... not rated. Thats a list of intrest, not quality..

Scooby, i'd normally agree with you, becuase i, like you, don't give a shit about RPG games.
However, the xbox doesn't cater to this croud of gamer.
There are COUNTLESS rpg's on PS2 that do insanely well, that people swear to me are incredible games ( i'm sure they are, i just don't plan to play them) and get great reviews from game sites and critics alike.

Anyhoo, here is a better list of "top games" taken from www.gamerankings.com, the name of the game, it's ranking, and it's AVERAGE reviewed score by at LEAST 10 (but usually MORE then 30) different websites or magazines is listed. (please not, average score does noit necisarily mean ranking, its a weird formula, but it worx out if you read how it worx...)

Xbox.
1.Halo - 94.7%
2.Star Wars: Knights of the Old republic - 94.1%
3. GTA Double Pack - 93.4%
4. Splinter Cel - 92.7%
5. Prince of Persia - 92.4%
6. Butnout 3: Takedown - 93.0%
7. Splinter Cel: Pandora tommorow - 92.7%
8. Project Gotham Racing 2 - 92.2%
9. Ninja Gaiden 91.1%
10. Soual Calibur II - 91.1%

PS2
1. GTA San Andreas - 94.7%
2. Grand Theft auto 3 - 94.6%
3. Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty - 94.4%
4. Gran Turismo 3: Sons of Liberty - 93.7%
5. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - 93.7%
6. Burnout 3: Takedown - 92.9%
7. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 - 92.9%
8. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution - 92.3%
9. Pro Evolution Soccer 3(aka. Winning eleven 7) - 92.2% <-- Reason to own a Ps2 alone, i think :p
10. Tony Hawks Pro skater 4 - 92.2%
11*.Prince Of Persia - 91.4%

*I added 11, for the ps2, mainly cause i think xbox gets a free slot by combining GTA's... while ps2 has them seperate...Prince of Persia is acctually is 12th on the list, but the number 11 was Winning Eleven 7, which is the same game as Pro Evo Soccer, number 9

Obvioulsy there are some HUGE realses in the next little while that will top the lists for both systems, but lets deal with the info we have, ok?

Anyways, heres something to look at, of the two lists, Xbox has 6 of it's top 10 games as being games also on Ps2, though not neccesarily in the top 10 of ps2's list.
In fact of those 6 games, they score an average of 92.6%
While the ps2 counterparts score an average of 91.2%
Thats quite a difference considering the top game and bottom games are only seperated by about 3% on both lists!

The same situation on PS2 has a different outcome:
5 of the games on the ps2 top 11 (we'll use the combined score of the GTA's to rival the Double pack on XB, and count it as one game). One less, sure, but still...
Anyways, avergae score of them: 92.92
Average of Xbox counterparts: 91.78
Similar, but still not as much as the difference on Xbox

SO?!!? what does it prove?
well it helps prove what i said earlier, that given the choice of the same game for xbox or ps2, the xbox one is usually better.
However, PS2 does not rely on it's multiplatfrom released games (i know it's hard to see in top 10, but in the top 20, the ps2 really takes of with exclusive titles something like 7 for 20, compared to xb's 12 for 20)

Now as per my RPG argument, lets check the same site for rpg titles.
Ps2 has 51 games listed, with the top 10 having an average review score range from 91.5% down to 82.8%
Xbox on the other hand has only 16 titles!! AND the top 10 average score range is from 94.1% all the way to 72.8%
IN FACT, ps2 doesn't have a title listed at less then ot equal to 72.8% until number 28 on it's list!

WOW does my head hurt... does yours too?!
I really hope this info helps someone out one day, it was a lot of work.
Acctually i love this kinda stuff, hence the working at the video game store thing :P

Terawatt_99
you guys are missing a couple of important games for Xbox, Mech assault and Mech assaul 2 (release scheduled after christmas, apparently so they can cash in on boxing day sales) MA1 was the spearhead of Xbox live, and a ton of people still play it today, and it's still a really awesome game...

anyways, now that i've gotten that off my chest, i can say what i say to everyone who asks me at work (i work in home electronics at zellers): look at the games, decide which system has more games that you want to play, then pick the system. because a lot of games are available for both consoles, for the most part it won't matter which system you get, since they're both the same price, only difference is, as was mentioned, issues with memory cards and network capabilities (which has been eliminated, sony doesn't manufacture barebones systems any more, they're all packaged with network adapters, and the new slim units have the cards built in) but concentrate on the exclusive titles, like gta san andreas, halo2, etc...

or you could, like Mustard said, buy both systems (which is what it looks like i'm going to be doing, since there are no plans for san andreas to come to xbox anytime soon...)

sorry scooby, didn't see this post...

umm no, we outsource all our repairs to one guy who doesn't want to deal with customers... so we just take 'em in and send them to him.
