I was going through a yellow light, and the camer flashed a couple times. I looke back and the camera was lowered with a guy working on it. I think this was a coincidence, I hope. And I can't imagine how I could get a ticket when the camera was out of position.
Just gave me a jolt. |

Read my reply in this THREAD on how the cameras operate and why the flash can go off. It was in response to a posting of yours last time too....
The camera is non-operational when lowerer for service...but the flashes are independant of whether there's a camera in the box or not...they will always go off if crossed on red...so it sounds to me like you either crossed on red as opposed to amber, or the camera's function was being tested in some manner. Regardless, you're more than likely fine...but slow down...amber lights are meant to be stopped for, not sped up for. |

| I realize this, I just got scared, I did not go through on the red and did not know what was going on, when I looked back and only then saw the guy working on it. |

I hate and love red light cameras at the same time. Reason I hate them is because I am nervouse when I go to an intersection and see the box or know it's there and it turns yellow I slam on my brakes to avoid a ticket not even thinking bout a person being behind me and could possibly hit me. However I love them cause it makes people slow down and stop going through red lights decreasing the number of accidents. So it is good to know how a red light camera actually works instead of slaming on my brakes in the future. I still have speed photo radar lol only because of being able to catch me red handed lol. However I have never gotten one so that is a good thing to.
Just my 2cents. |

I know what you mean about that. I had a minor accident a few years ago, because the guy ahead of me hammered on the brakes for a yellow light. His '99 Mustang with ABS outbraked my '87 Camaro at least 3:1. I didn't hit him hard, and we both drove away with minorly scathed cars and no injuries. Now I'm getting sued over it.
Yippee. Part of being a driver is taking into consideration the vehicles surrounding you when responding to a signal change.
I pay a lot more attention to the pedestrian signals now when I'm driving through the city. They're good for seeing a yellow coming.

Outbraked 3:1. what, do you have to use "Flintstone brakes?" There's no way any street car will brake from the same speed as your camaro in 1/3 the distance unless your brakes don't actually work. Just nitpicking. |

| I think all photo-radar and red-light cmeras are bullshit. There's been no data to support the fact that either of these devices decrease accidents on the road. Nothing but cash cows for the government |

Actually, there's lots to support Red Light Cameras...and besides, anybody going through a red light deserves a ticket...no matter what.
As to Photo Radar, it's a decreasing scale...once people know the locations and the vehicles, they slow down accordingly at that location, then speed right back up again. It only catches the unwary. |

Nice to think that an '87 Camaro with front discs and rear drums might have had good brakes for it's time, but it sure couldn't compare to a '99 Mustang with discs all around with anti-lock. Funny how time and technology does that.

Well, maybe I agree with the red light cameras for the most part - if you go through one, that's bad, but sometimes there can be extraneous situations that cause that to happen, so they are not always as cut and dry as they seem.
The flashes that still work even though there is no camera in the box, is still a great deterrant nonetheless. It helps to remind people that they should try to stop if they reasonably can, instead of speeding up to avoid having to stop.
Just know the difference. When you see a yellow, don't try to test your oustanding sports-car braking system without looking in your rear-view mirror, first. The guy behind you might not be able to stop as fast as you. If there is someone behind you in an intersection when the flash goes off, guess who gets the ticket?

| I always wondered what happened if somebody went through a red, and the person behind them did too. I know that person should not be following that close if they could not stop, but better to run a red a "little bit" than be rear ended by a semi. |
