Okay so looks like I'll be aquiring a Bimmer 533i (1983) and it's a 5spd.... however it looks like it's got a blown tranny.

I need a new 5 spd replacement tranny (new = used) and it installed? Where can I go for this or ?????

I called Bavaria BMW & they want $4000 to replace the transmission w/ a new oem one. And I'm not willing to spend that.

1983?...i guess you don't need our help picking out a car any more?...i don't mean to sound like an A-hole but did you even have enough money for the S2000,BMW M5, etc...? 1983 is a big big jump down from the cars you were looking at...:dunno: i don't mean to diss you or anything man:p just wondering. as for your question try finding a tranny at say a junk yard maybe:dunno:

Awww yes.... I read it now.... But why bother picking up such an old car? I mean its old, its a bmw..... does that not ring a bell or turn a light on in your head and remind you of *MAJORLY EXPENSIVE REPAIRS?*!

try Ital motor on 101st and around kingsway....

JustinL
Karmac behind Bavaria and Dante's will be able to do it too. Maybe not the cheapest or best, but worth checking out none the less.

So you blew your tranny huh?

HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!

That sucks!

BWAAHAHAHAA!!!!!

I'm sooo funny. Just messin with ya Chris. I would have said that regardless of who blew their tranny.

Aren't there wreckers that specialise in older BMWs? I'm sure someone on a BMW forum might be able to point you in the right direction.:dunno:

The reason for this car is that it's a friends car, he's looking to get something else.... I figured it's a better winter beater than my beater jeep. Also this particular body style Bimmer, there is an M5 model of that - which they have in a current BMW Tuner mag, it's a hot lil car and it's something I've taken interest in as well.

So yes, my hunt for a *real* car still continues, this is just something to play with in the meantime. Maybe something I can give to my little brother for him to learn 5spd on (he's not touchin my rx7).

As for expensive repairs, yes I know that.... I didn't think it'd be as hard as it's proving to be to find good used parts for this car.... most cars you can go to a wrecker and find it but I dunno!? Guess I was wrong - oh well, just a little something for a side project I guess. If I don't find what I'm looking for, out to the Farm it goes!!

So I'll give Karmac a call tomorrow & see what they can do.

Louis do you know of any BMW specialty shops in Alberta/BC??? I haven't found any decent forums that cater locally to this style of Bimmer.

DeathBy240
How much did ya pay for it?

redbaron303
Not a lot really. Probably less than I spent on some of my shoes.... (I won't say a price b/c I'm not sure he'd be happy w/ me saying so)

GTS Jeff
how exactly is hte tranny "blown?" like whats wrong with it? whats stopping u from doing a rebuild?

redbaron303
Time is what's stopping me.... :P I'd rather just *boom* have it done tomorrow and be back on the road.

I guess the syncros or something are gone - 2nd gear is unusable.

JustinL
Sounds like it's time to learn to double clutch :)

A good place to call is Prestige Auto. (not the dealership on whyte) There is a guy named Alanor there that is realy good with Mercedes, BMW, etc.

Welcome to the world of having a car with no used parts.

The MR2 you have to buy from the states or the dealer.

So i suggest looking on some US boards that cater to your car and buy a tranny from there. Much cheaper than buying from the dealer.

tranny rebuilds dont take much longer than tranny replacements, especially if ure just replacing syncros.

redbaron303
I mayhave been wrong about it just being syncros.... I don't think first or second exist anymore and third is only *half* there..... it's a *REALLY* fuckered tranny.

If I can't find the right parts used then I guess it may become a parts car or maybe I'll try for an automatic swap and sell it to some old guy?!

midnite
definatly check out some bwm forums, parts may be hard to find here locally, but can probably be found quite cheap on boards.

you selling the Heep once you get the 533 on the road?

redbaron303
No probably not, the heep is a keeper :P.... I don't know though for sure. I'm not even sure if I will get the 533i on the road if I can't find the parts for it in some reasonable time here. It's a comfy car, purrs like a kitten so it'd be nice to put it through it's paces again.
