IS300, 350Z, G35 Coupe? Rx-8 is out of the question :P I really do not like it. Which one would you get? Some thing with some power, but also has to be classy (my definition of classy is not common, something that is away from the crowd :P and you rarely see on the streets kind of thing)
edit: originally i wanted an IS300 but many of the comments about them being slow really discouraged me from wanting one. I still love the car but I don't want to rape my wallet further just to get some power out of it |

| The IS 300 is by no means slow. It ain't no race car but its not slow. Throw on some aftermarket parts or FI and shes good to go. I love my IS 300 I think they look very classy. But another car I would look at would be a used S4. Tons of power and all wheel drive. |

AWD G35...
I would personally try to get my hands on a STI. A little more tuner oriented but I believe it has a measure of class. The interior is very nice by my standards. |

2002 M3.... fast, luxurious.... track ready.
May be preowned, but beautiful, and its already taken its biggest hit on depreciation.
Go with the M3.

There is a AWD Coupe in the works, the AWD Sedan is already out.
There is also the 300HP motor which will make it's way into the Coupe' soon as well.

All those cars are slow, but nice. Its a toss up, the Z and G are both sweet cars, but only have 2 seats, while the IS has less power but a bit more versatility.
Personally I like the Z, but its just a question of styling. :) |

| mmm M3 I'll go look into that, G35 I love the styling of the coupe and its interior, I'm really not looking to drive this vehicle in the winter most likely its going to be stored. don't really like the S4 (thats the audi one right?) well thats the one I took a quick look at. C5 vette I'll look into that one too :) S2000 haven't thought about that either I'll go look at that too... which one of these cars have a big after market just incase I ever choose to take it to another step :) time to go do some research >.< |

Exactly. Not worth the sacrifice to get a G35 with AWD.
If you are interested in a classy 4 door sedan with AWD, I would go with the Audi A4. Then at least you can get a 6 speed manual with it. :) |

Why limit yourself to only Japanese cars?
there are lots of powerful, classy European cars for $55k
test drive and you will find the one you want
going on the internet asking for people's opinions will get you what they want |
|
|
| Kiddo |
| ummm yea... hahaa test driving i dunno man I'm pretty rusty with my manual tranny skills and if its a big dealership giving a 19 year old a run on thier 55grand car >.< maybe i'll go try it out ahha I'm just nervous since its my first big buy any type of car is good just as long as I like it! doesn't matter if its american european, jap :P I just don't want it sending me back to the dealership every couple weeks to get repaired thats all... |
|
|
| REFLUX |
Alright well if your manual transmission skills are rusty, it would be best to brush up on them first or look into Tiptronic/automatic transmissions
as for dealerships not taking you seriously, take an older friend or a parent with you
I'm sure luxury dealerships have dealt many times with parents who are looking at getting a nice car for their child before
I'm assuming you're going to winter drive it?
Seeing as how your driving skills aren't very refined yet, a high HP, RWD sports car might just end up being a very expensive writeoff.
Have you considered an older but just as nice car?
Or even just a cheaper car all in all.
You've got to remember that insurance will play a factor in how affordable a car is for you. It'd be a good idea to check with your family's insurance company or call around for rates.
With all that said, assuming you still have your heart set on a high HP, luxury, car and don't have worries about writing it off...my best suggestion for something that is:
-Fun & sporty
-Very Safe
-Not common & is unique
-Reliable
-Practical
would be a Volvo S60R |

Good point. |

| I've had previous experience with RWD (just not with alot of power), I'm looking for manual just because I want a manual (stupid reason but I seriously want to have lots of fun and maybe have that 5 or 6spd there if i ever plan to modify the car and I don't want to have to do a tranny swap). The money is comming from my own pocket I'll have enough to put a big down payment, my driving record has been clean for 2 1/2 years now no tix or accidents. I want something more modern. My 240 will most likely turn into a winter car and the new car will be stored for the winter. I'm not too concerned in practicality because I can always borrow my dads SUV if i have to carry stuff around. Even though I say it now I do not intend on modifying the car but I'll end up doing it anyways eventually. :) thanks for the advice though |

cool if you've got a winter beater that's good
then you've got many more options
here are a few more suggestions on top of the current ones:
-Honda S2000
-Acura 3.2CL
-Mercedes SLK
-Porsche Boxster
-BMW M3 (mentioned a few times but I think it's worth mentioning again)
-BMW Z4
-Audi TT
-An older Acura NSX
-1995-1998 Toyota Supra
-Lexus SC400
I would suggest a Saab but I'm not too familiar with them |

The Audi TT is not even worthy of the title "sports car".
In every comparo I can recall reading in recent years, it always takes dead LAST, trailing by a large margin from its competitors (S2000, Boxster, Z3/Z4, SLK, 350Z Roadster, etc.). And, its built on the Beetle platform (shudder...).
Looks-wise... totally subjective of course.
P.S. if you like Audi's however, I think the S4 would be a far, far better choice. (I've heard the twin-turbocharged version is easy to mod too). |

I agree with Inzane. TT=YUCK!
Have you ever driven one? Drives like ass, and is slow for the money. Yes, even the 225hp AWD model. SLOW. And they teeny tiny intercoolers (one on each side of the rad) heat soak like nothing.
But it's the ultimate car if you want to pick up all the local 12 year old girls. |

Once you drive manual, you won't want to go back. Test drive the cars, once you find the one for you, you'll feel it.
Since you arn't paying for it all at once, look for a 1yr old used car, you will save a lot of money and the car will still have lots of warranty left.
Also, spending 25k on a car, and saving 25k for a down payment on a nice house wouldn't be a bad idea at all. |

Get anything EXCEPT a Corvette.
Wreck something else, first.
Save the Corvette until you can appreciate and respect it.
I vote for a WRX STi, instead. It has room for your friends, plenty of power, and handles great, even when you inadvertently fuck up. The best part about AWD is you can simply point it and peg it, without too much worry about your back bumper passing the front.

To those who suggested thanks for giving me cars to search for, to narrow it down:

1) You're 19. When I was 19 I had been driving for 4 years and was considered a very safe & good driver by everyone I knew. Then a bus changed lanes into me.
You can do EVERYTHING in your power to drive as defensively as possible, but that isnt' going to stop crazy ETS bus drivers from not shoulder checking when they change lanes or some soccer mom in her Suburban from rear ending you at a light because she screaming at 8 kids in the back.
2) Of the three cars up top, get the NSX. It's rare in Edmonton (next to the Supra), has luxury/class, is not considered a "daddy bought me this" type car like an M3.
NSX owners are mature, respectable to one another & others, and IMO a better crowd of car enthusiast than M3 & SupraTT owners.
No offense to current M3 & SupraTT owners, this is just a generalization that obviously does not apply to ALL M3 & SupraTT owners. |
|
|
| SilverZ24 |
| Just please tell me you aren't going to buy one of those cars and be living in a appartment or something. I obviously don't know your situation, but too many people don't seem to have any sense of balance when it comes to stuff like that. If you own a 50 grand car, you should at least be living in a house worth 4-5 times as much IMO (and it shouldn't be your parents lol). |
|
|
| 95IntegraRS |
Trust me Terry, your generalization is WAY off. People who spend cash on higher end cars are way more mature and sensible than people who are buying tuner rides at the lower end of the spectrum. While your comments about NSX drivers are quite true, much the same can be said about M3 and SupraTT drivers. People who have the ability to spend that much cash on their rides are usually sensible and respectable. Of course you do have your assholes...
Just to give you an example, when I went with my friend Jacky who has a Spec R1 WRX to a NASIOC meet, everyone was older (25+ range), dressed fairly nicely, were very respectable and stand up guys. Whereas, when I go to a Alberta Integras meet, everyone is dressed very casually, it was a lot younger crowd and although every was very courteous, you could tell that the level of maturity was that much lower based on the age difference and I think the positions in life the Integra crowd is at in comparison to the Subie crowd.
Hope I got my point across and I'm not just blathering endlessly. |

Matt:
good point about the mucho money = more respectability but I've met an M3 owner or two....really snobby
Chris:
it's a similar idea to deciding what car you want based on aftermarket support
if you plan on modding your car, you want to have a good amount of parts to choose from & buy
this applies to owning a car as well, if you get an older car & plan to do work on it yourself...it's nice to have others with the same car, with experience, be willing to help you
especially since Kiddo is a young guy, a 19 year old going to a BMW club meet with a 2002 M3 probably won't be taken very seriously by the other much older members and be judged by his age
though I totally agree that people should choose the car THEY like, I was just trying to show that there are more variables that affect a person's decision other than their one on one "relationship" with their car |

I love my 350Z, but I wish I'd have bought a G35C instead.
You will not see a G35CX either because the Infiniti GT-R is of course all wheel drive, that will be released in late 2006/early 2007 but it will definately be more than 55K. More like 75/80K Canadian.
I am already on the list for one in Washington state... I am far to excited about going that deep in debt. (fuck)
I was quote an expected price of 65K US. So yeah, expensive... but for 450hp+ at the rear wheels, AWD plus 7 speed getrag... I am all about it. Not to mention rarity factor... the new GT-R's will be near impossible to come by. Alberta gets 10 in the first year. That's it. :)
For now though, if I had to do it again, without question... G35C. Then spend some coin and replace your wheels and rubber right away, drop it down with Tiens and you're set.
Classy, bad ass and quick. (enough) |

How much cash did you have to put down inorder to get on that list? I can't believe that alberta is even getting 10! I thought that nissan would send them all to the US, maybe a few to Toronto and Vancouver. I wonder if you're getting a better deal by buying it in the us because of the exchange rate? If I were you I'd be excited about going that far into debt too, just think of how many chicks will want you to take their picture when you're rollin in a gtr. |

My only question would be insurance. How much would insurace cost for a 19 year old driving a 55000 dollar sports car? I bet it would be retardedly high even with out collision and if you do decide to put collision on it (which you would do if you had 1/2 a brain) how much would that cost? Buy a house first, you've got the rest of your life to have a big fancy car! Buy it when you're 25 when your insurace rate drops to 1/3 of what it is now. |

The only girls I'd roll in a GT-R are sadly underage. Girls that are 18+ don't know what a GT-R is. Well, most don't. Kind of sucks but at the same time, I didn't buy it to pick up girls, I bought it to make a mockery of the mountain roads, or at least, try to. :) Of course, keep the speeding on the track. :)
What sucks is my TT set up arrived last week so it goes in in the spring... I am not 100% sure if I am going to sell the Z when I get the GT-R or keep both. The Z will have more power than the GT-R but it won't be AWD so I might decide to keep the Z and really crank it out. Nothing quite like eating some Mustang or Corvette guy to make him pissed off. He'd somewhat expect it from a GT-R but never from a Z. 650hp at the wheels is always a shock. :) |
