Is the High Performance Driving School at Race City going to happen this year?
For the last 2 years I've always signed up in January via the website but there's no sign of the event this time
Anyone hear anything about it? |

| Hmmmm, I'd be interested in this if I were to find a nice big intercooler. If not my car would heat soak in about one minute and be in great danger of painting the track with oil/coolant/my blood and sweat. |

From what I understand, Race City has changed their business plan this year. They are more of a "facility for hire", rather than a promoter. What this means is that the road race community will have to handle all aspects of running the school (not to mention race weekends), instead of just providing the instructors. I think they are a little busy getting their shit together so that they can race this year.
I haven't heard anything definite yet, but I would imagine the school will go on. Might take a little longer for things to get organized though. |

Well its on the schedule but without a date. I'm guessing they're still trying to finalize the schedule.
I'm tempted to do it again this year. Last year was fun in the Neon but the turbo didn't agree with the cooling system during extended driving. If I feel like shelling out for some some R-compounds for the SRT-4 I'd might register again. |

www.racecity.com
this is the main page but as MrHeavyFoot mentioned, they may not be promoting it so you may not find it on the page
www.cscc.ab.ca
this is the Calgary Sports Car Club, they organize the driving school
there is a webforum & schedule, for the past 2 years the school has been hosted at the very end of April or very beginning of May. It looks like beginning of May is the tentative time frame for 2005
personally, I won't be attending this year but I would LOVE to attend the Evolution AutoCross school

June26/27 @ Red Deer  |

Is this the same session as the "BMW driving school"?
That's a really sh#tty timeframe, especially for out-of-towners. That's a really bad time of year weather-wise to be planning/counting on a highway trip in cars that are likely wearing either Z-rated or R-compound tires for an event like this. Its so unpredictable. Sometimes April can be great and them BLAM we get hit with snow in the first week of May. D'oh!
Calgarians have a slight advantage at least being local to the event.
I was hoping someone was going to say it would be in either late May or even in June. |

Its similar bit not the same as the driving BMW school.
What you say about the weather is true (just ask Reflux), but the main purpose of this school is to license new drvers for road racing, so they have to do it as early in the seaon as possible. I don't think they'll reschedule to later in the season just to appease a handful of out of town non-racers. |

sadly it is true
briefly:
-1st year/time going to Race City (end of April)
-Falken Azenis tires
-MASSIVE snowstorm
-Stuck in Calgary for 3 days
-Had to leave my car and FLY back to Edmonton (work)
 at the time
 now that I look back at it |

  That's exactly why I'd be hesitant to book myself in for such an early event date like that. Any chance they run another course of this type towards the end of the season? (I thought I'd heard somewhere that there was usually at least 2 per season). |

Very good point!
Being local to Race City - one of the few advantages of being a Calgarian! :p :stickpoke |

I don't remember the CSCC hosting two schools
Another company called Track Techniques hosts their own little driving school about once a summer (usually later into the summer)
PM me your email and I'll forward you the school layout he sent to me last year. |

Yes, the annual High Performance and Competition Driving school will once again be held at Race City Motorsport Park. ( we're approaching the 19th year)
Rick Coutts is the only contact person this year ( I have stepped down after 10 years of promoting this event with Rick Coutts).
Rick's email: couttsr@shaw.ca
The format will be similar.
Price has not been confirmed but it will probably be in the $400 to $450 range. ( track rental arrangement (cost) is very different in 2005.
Spaces will once again be limited. Get your registration into Rick, ASAP. The last few years we have hit our target by early March.
Dates: April 30 and May 1 2005.
Registration at the moment is through Rick. ( In previous years it was through Race City. They are no longer handling registration.)

hope ppl have fun & learn lots this year :)
I thought they overfilled the course last year...so many cars on the track during lapping sessions...:dunno: |

| I agree. The 50-60 people they had last year were waaaay too many. |

I really really want to attend some sort of professional driving school this year. I've been wanting to do this for the past couple of years but have chickened out, not had the funds or my car wasn't at the level I wanted it to be.
So, this year, I'm good to go. I want to learn how to actually drive technically so I don't look like a fool if I do hit up some auto-x's this year... |

Your car was less reliable than it was in stock form?
You really don't need anything more than a reliable car to take a HPD school :)
You might want to look into the Evolution Autocross school this year if you wish to do Autocrosses

What do you mean by this statement?
I'm saying that I've improved on the already great prelude platform by the addition of suspension and engine components. I would say it's any more reliable... |

| i think he meant that your car was fine for autocross because even a stock car can autox and your car was even better then stock |

| ya.i wouldn't mind trying a few auto-x's this year. they sound fun. plus some guys from the corvette club have been asking me to come out for 2 years lol |

Darcy:
hehe sorry for the confusion, 92_White_H23 got my meaning :)
you don't need to modify a car just to attend a HPD school, there is a very large variety of cars & experiences levels that attend the school.
I make mention of that because many people that I talk to feel intimidated in attending just because it's a "HIGH PERFORMANCE Driving School" so they need a "HIGH PERFORMING" car (at least higher performing than stock).
People take their stock Sunfires, Audi wagons, Subaru Outbacks, etc to this school. Of course there are the BMWs, Porsches, S2000s, open wheel race cars, fully caged & track only cars too but don't go on believing that you have to be some top contendor. It's a school where everyone learns, beginners & even experienced racers.
I had a similar mindset when I first signed up, put on SS brake lines, suspension bar, & new tires. What I really should have done was just make sure my car would be able to withstand the stress of HPD and learned how the car handles at the limit in its PURE stock form.
Hope that's a little bit clearer  |
