2. The Fast and the Furious
Two cars are in a race. The Blue Car has a 6-cylinder engine while the Green Car has an 8-cylinder engine. While the Blue Car’s engine works hard in terms of high RPMs, it doesn’t actually go all that fast down the road. In contrast, the Green Car’s more powerful engine doesn’t have to run at high RPMs. Yet on the road, the Green Car blows the doors off the Blue Car. The more powerful Green Car engine is designed to run
efficiently and to deliver a faster, more powerful driving experience.
The same goes for processors. Some processors have to rev their engines to higher RPMs (measured in Megahertz or Gigahertz) just to achieve similar levels of performance. A system running with an AMD Athlon XP processor or mobile AMD Athlon 4 processor is like having a more powerful engine because it does more work per revolution, therefore it can outperform a processor that simply revs its engine higher but is less powerful.

Yeah, unfortunately, the AMD chip has no thermal managment, once your CPU fan caves (and it will) you're CPU will go up in a HEAP of smoke.
The P4 will slow don't, but won't blow... Peace of mind, hmmm, I like that.
I trust Intel anyday. |

u trust intel!? no way.. they are liek microsoft. i personally think the p4's suck (tho i have one :P) and that amd's chips are much better.
The fan on my computers have never gone. Just do some maintenance man.. just like a car. :D |

Clawhammer has built-in thermal management. Thunderbirds and up also have thermal management... albeit REALLY crappy one at that. It can only detect a thermal differential of 1C/s. Hahaha... :gay:
Clawhammer's thermal management should be comparable to Intel, with the option of having it on chip or using an external logic.
Intel charges too much for their chips. The average cost of manufacturing for ANY chip is US$40, with their high-end 3.06Ghz processors yielding a margin of 1843.35% (based on Bcom's price of $1165 and 1.58 fx rate).
Even EZ motorsports can't match that kind of margin!

| haha they gotta recoup their R&D costs tho. But yea.. they are way too pricey.. even their old chips are pricey still! |

P4 has a very poor design, the P3 had a better design then the P4 did.. if there was a P3 and a P4 running at the exact same speed, the P4 would be 40% slower then the P3...
AMD makes better chips anyday... and their cheaper. |

serious?? damn.. i got me a p4 :(
guess intel is really screwing up... p4's suck.... their x64 chip will suck too, sicne it basically sounds like the PPro's (not running 32 bit apps). And we all nwo what happened to the PPro's..... |

| BlueTurboEGG --> damn you're right about the fan..i went and upgraded my cpu fan to a bigger fan with larger heat sink just to keep the temp down...good call... |

BTE & ncc1701:
Yup.. my buddy upgraded his fan on his athlon 750??... stock/slightly upgraded fan did not have enough airflow to cool. He had an ORB thermal heatsink and fan. As soon as he started his pc, cpu temp was around 56c.
The new heatsink is MASSIVE the fan on top is an 80mm fan.. pretty much the same size as a case fan. It seems to work better in the blow not the suck position.
Now I think the cpu temps are running around 43c
On to cpus:
The intel people say that the P4 is designed to run 32bit applications faster than the P3.
They say that in direct comparisons, the p3 will win.
As so few REAL 32bit apps are out there, comparisons are not fair.
But once again, this is theory, and the real bottlenecks are the data paths to the memory and peripherals.
In order to get the wide memory paths and better chipsets... a new MB is in order. So you have to either get a P4 or Athlon.

amd vs intel wars are fought on thousands of tech sites every day, and you know, no one ever wins.
amd is cheaper, more efficient, and hotter.
intel is more expensive, faster, cooler, more expensive... did we mention cost?
also, if your running RD1066 rdram with a 3.06 hyperthreaded p4 with other top notch hardware, you will destroy any athlon, in SOME areas.
basically p4 owns video and photo manipulation, athlon owns everything else.
and yeah, ive used both, and im currently running athlon :D |
