A friend of mine has a Chev truck with the 6.6 litre Duramax diesel engine. He bought a HyperTech Power Programmer III to boost his horsepower. It works well & he wants to try it on some other similar friend's trucks, but acording to the manual it can only be used on one truck at a time. It is "married" to the truck it progams. I guess it takes the original program from the truck and saves it for restoring it.
My question is: isn't there someway to use it to program other vehicles other than the original? Can't the data stored in it from the first truck be downloaded to your home PC?
Does anyone know how? |

I had one for my 96 Chevrolet S10.
How it works is that it saves the stock settings in the unit and then you can re-program the vehicles computer settings afterwards. In order for it to work on another vehicle, you have to revert your vehicles computer settings back to stock, which removes the saved stock settings in the unit.
If you try to plug the unit into another vehicle with your saved stock settings, it won't work. It will try to verify the VIN and if it finds a VIN that is different than what is saved in the unit, it will give you an error message.
Perhaps the newer models have varied but I'm pretty sure that was the case when I had mine.
BTW, I have a hypertech power programmer for sale that is specific for all 1996 Chevrolet/GMC trucks. I'm willing to let it go for cheapy cheapy... |

Xx D-MAN xX,
It's not the answer I was hoping for but I think you are right. He would have to restore his truck to original settings, then program friend's truck.
Oh well,

| Nah, once its used you've got to reload the stock program back into the vehicle before it can be used again on anything else. |

This what I received from hypertech technical support:
Programmers work on the model year and engines listed on the back of the unit only. Only the instruction booklet is good for multiple years since the programming process is the same. Part# 370202 is needed for the 1997 model.
If you programmed the unit back to stock it will be clear and ready to use on another vehicle of the same year and engines listed on the back of the programmer. Whether the unit works or not depends on several factors. If the next vehicle has been updated by GM with new calibrations not available to us when the programmer was made it will not work. The only way to know for sure whether the unit will work is to hook the unit up and see if it recognizes the vehicles computer. If so you're ready to go. If not it will give you an error message "calibration not found" or something similar. Our warranty is for the original purchaser for as long as you own the vehicle the unit is originally installed. Once a programmer is sold or used on a different vehicle the warranty is void.
Jim
If you're the original purchaser of the programmer and it has been returned to stock we can exchange it for a fee of $200.00 for any Programmer we have available. If interested give our tech line a call at 901-382-8888 with the part# serial# and revision# off the back of the programmer. Thanks |

So, for $200 you can get any unit re-programmed to match your vehcile. Not bad.
I'd sell my unit to you if you want to get it re-programmed. It will still be cheapier than paying $700 for a brand new one.
Let me know if your interested.... Willing to let it go cheapy cheapy... |
