Do radar detectors detect cops? - Click HERE for Original Thread

gerrycurl
anyone with a list of what they do detect? how many people have one and are happy that they bought one? any recommendations?

Radar detectors detect radar. Valentine 1/2.

notaturbotalon
Most of the time they won't "detect" the radar until it's too late. They don't detect laser until it actually hits you, and a cheap unit will be worthless.

Mekanik22
There are a couple kinds. One will pick up photoradar and another will pick up laser. Some have all in one unit.

No-Pistons
90% of cops leave there mobile radar on. so yes and no.

I got an Escort 8500 x50, i'm happy with it, haven't experienced laser radar, it does pickup photo radar when people r in front of me, it does detect cops but not all the time.

Kyle2K
i dont believe any detectors pick up photoradar, because they dont detect cameras. however i do believe they pick up the radar gun that the photoradar people use.

they still use a form of radar k band to tell your speed

You can't detect a laser until it actually hits your vehicle and it's too late. Lasers require a jammer to beat them, which is illegal because according to FCC (sp?) you can't have something emmitting a signal without a license. Radar can be detected because the beam is wide and can be caught by the detector as it bounces off other vehicles.

The FCC is a US regulator, and as such has no bearing on Canada. Secondly the FCC does not regulate laser jammers. Due to a twist of regulations, lasers radar guns and the associated jammers are covered under the a medical regualtion. No transmitting licence is required for use. Certian states have banned the use of jammers, similar to certian states banning the use radar detectors.

so laser jammers are legal in canada?

also, i think laser detectors can pick up the signal when cars around you are hit.

I'm am uncertain as to their legality in Canada. But like radar detectors, it may vary from province to province.

I was just pointing out that naturbotalon is naming a US regulatory board and the wrong one at that.

If you want a good breakdown of how radar/laser detectors work and when they work check out the Valetine1 detector website. http://www.valentine1.com/laserhowto/

BTW Valentine1's are the best detectors out there. By far surpass any of the stuff available from the big names.

alright so most of the time, a radar detector will detect a copcar then but will not detect a lasergun till it too late? does edmonton have alot of laserguns? Radar detectors detect photoradar aswell then. Who carrys Valentine and whats the approx cost of a unit?

NO

they do not detect cop cars ...

they detect radar when it is in use ...

laser detection only works when you get a reflection off another vehicle. If you are targeted, by the time you have your foot on the brakes (even if you have the reaction of an F1 driver) the cop already has your speed.

in short just slow the fuck down. If you are that concerned about it chances are you shouldnt be driving fast at all.

^-- well said.. I had a detector... I got sooo many tickets when i had one... i relied on it too much. it got stolen, i stopped getting tickets for 2 reasons, first i slowed down and second i learned to spot the cops before they spot me.

I have a Passport 8500. It is great at picking up moving radar and photo radar. This unit is capable of doing a lot of things such as picking up emergency vehicle and much more. But it only does that in the States as their cop cars are all equiped with some sort of laser/wave. The 8500 doesn't pick up laser that well as I found out the hard way last week. This unit goes for about $550.

exactly, i probably drive anywhere from 30-40 thousand kms a year for work, and i put away the radar detector years ago, and havent gotten a ticket since ... but when i had it I got them all the time. You can usually get away with 10 over, now if you go 20 over you will get pulled over usually. So you are going 10 km/h faster than you were, so in 5 hours at 120, you would only get there 50 kms ahead. so maybe 30 minutes. Now is 30 minutes worth the extra money you will pay for insurance ? not to me it aint. Nevermind what would happen if ya had an accident from speeding

SilverNeonRacer
Lol.. in my truck that just died.. I used to get away with murder... well as far as speeding on the highway goes... a couple times I didn't see the cop, didn't think I was going fast then I look down to see I'm doing 130km/h in a 100zone... speedo said 120, but I had much larger tires. Never got pulled over... I really lucked out, prolly cause my truck looked like a farmer mobile.
