Wide rim Advantages? - Click HERE for Original Thread

HeavyEarly87T
Does anybody know if there is any advantage in having a rim widened. Before you jump on this here is the question.

Supra stock rim = 16x7
It can be widened to 8 or 8.5.
Can you even get tires to fit that?

I could just buy a set of 17 x 8, 8.5, or 9's but I would loose the stock stealth look.

Widening the rims would cost about $250 each new rims would be about $500 each for that size.

So back to the question. Will there be an advantage to widening stock rims?

Thanks,

traction

It'd give you better traction, but why widen stock rims when aftermarket ones would give you better performance? Just save up some more and get some lighter wheels.

Of course you can get tires to fit that..

I think to run a 245 series tire you'll need a 16x8 rim.

If traction is a problem, then yes, you'll need to run a wider tire. Don't Vette's nowadays run 295's in the back?

GTS Jeff
larger contact patch and all the pros/cons associated with it.

ChromeDragon
Larger tire doesn't always necessarily mean more traction.

HeavyEarly87T
Thanks for the input.

My thoughts are that yes there will be a straight line traction improvement, but what about cornering?

crazyrx7
1. A wide tire in the rear looks awesome and mean.
2. You will get better traction off of the line but your rotating mass will be greater so you will lose a bit of acceleration time (just get more hp and it will solve this problem)
3. Your handling will be better as long as you don't go 60 series tires.
4. Any real "sports car" has this feature or is intended to have it(supra, rx-7, 300zx tt, s2000, boxter......)

I Looked around on the internet (google) and found a place in Manitoba that does it, but I never followed up. I think there is a place that does it here in town because I got the Idea from a pickup on the yellowhead. He had advertising for a place that does wheel widening for trucks. Industrial I think. I'll edit this post if I can find them.

:D

Edit: I called a few places and found out there is a guy in Redwater that does it but he could not remember the name. The only listing I found was for JEM auto repair, but I do not have the time to call.

mwdguy
There's a place in Calgary that does it. I forget the name. maybe try on beyond.ca theymight know

Bigger wheels on the back Rahul. Pay attention!!!

As I said, bigger isn't always better.

A larger contact patch spreads out the weight and provides less actual ground pressure. That's why when you see someone do a burnout with massively wide tires it will leave no rubber, or very little. You need to find the correct balance between width and weight to ensure ultimate traction. I can't honestly say I know how to go about calculating it, so I guess just experimenting.

I ran 205 wide rubber at the track last year and pulled some 1.8s 60 foot times in my car. When I made the attempt in "better" 245 wide rubber I just spun through second gear.

crazyrx7
What you said is true Matt. When it comes to drag racing then you don't want to go too big unless you run slicks. But for the street and everyday use the wider tire will be better plus look better. It all depends what you want your car for, street, drag or what ever.

actually a staggered setup will not always improve handling either. Too much stagger will induce understeer.

one application that wider rear wheels is almost always good in is a MR car.. the weight transfer to the back wheels (=grip) on launch is amazing.

MR??

Mid engine Rear Drive?

beatshack
yes, mid engine, rear wheel drive.

you know, FR, FF, MR, the ocasional RR.

a guy i know is pushing over 400whp in a fiero with a v8 chevy swap, and he's having a hard time spinning the back wheels on launch :D

the advantage is as others stated, but i think that widening your
stock rims is to get an orriginal look, it also aids in traction,
dependant on use.

if you do go the way of widening, i suggest not to make the rears
excessivly wide in comparison, try to fill out the fenders width-wise, also consider wheel offset??

p.s. if you do find a place in your search that widens rims, give me
a shout i am interested in doing so to my car. thanx.

carl.

uncorkedsupra
i forgot, placement of wider tires in the rear of a rear drive,
lessens the tendency for the car to oversteer in a tight corner.
be careful though the excessivly wide tire may cause understeer-
but that is nothing extra power can't correct.

example=porche, lambo...etc.

where do u get the rims widended and how do they do it oh and do you think they would be able to make a wider rim so the center design would fit its a ssr bright speed racing...i dont have it but its a 2 peice wheel or w/e and there are 12 bolts holding it onto a cracked rim...and its only 6.5' wide and its a 14' height with like...barely anylip..

I cant tell you. I called a place, I think I posted it above, you would have to call them to find out.

I know they cut the rim and add a bit into that spot. I guess it depends on where the can cut as to if you get a lip or not.

People on this forum have mentioned wheel repair shops in town. Maybe they will know more about this?

I have decided not to follow up on this as my stock rims are 16" and I want to go 17".

dance_of_curse
ahh well i was just wondering....its like....a super small rim 14x6.5 so cant really have a wide tire or stretched wheels on it and i think it would be easier just to get like a blank rim....i dont know if you ever watched american hot rod  but they have that huge pile of like outer rims and that would be like perfect for what i would need it for:bthumbup: plus the ssr bright speed racing rims ae hard enough to come by

d.maczko
I know this is an old thread but im looking to get some wheels widened maybe an inch or two, they are aluminum also. Does anyone know where i could get this done locally or in the province somewhere?

McFly
Keep the rim center the same as stock and handeling will barely change.

Something to do with scrub radius that i dont know anything about haha:dunno:

Shag_86
i know for me when i have my 15X7.5 and 15X8 its more stable when im drifting :D

what kind of wheels

im mostly looking for wider for more traction

Shag_86
You can see the lip in the back

Dan_s_young
Wide tires FTW!

Oh yes and check out diamond racing wheels. I can't imagine a car with wheels widened like that passing a safety inspection. if a weld breaks while cornering, ummmm that could be pretty bad...
