Racing style steering wheel? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Imprezzme_STi
This has always been a question of mine, what's the legalities of having a racing style steering wheel?

energie
if your stock steering wheel has an airbag, and u take it out and replace it with a steering wheel that doesn't have an airbag its illegal.

Please state the act and section that disallows you to remove the airbag. It may exist, but nobody has been able to show me the law.

nuuuuu....I want the STi rally style steering wheel :p I'm hearing so many conflicting things though, yeah its ok, nay its not ok, if you just get a racing harness with the steering wheel doesn't that compensate for a safety measure? Come to think of it, it'll kinda' look cool too.

no it doesnt. Harnesses can't be used in the street

First questions is, who's going to find out? Anyway, if you're pulled over sometime, maybe you've gotta worry about this.

I don't know how the wheel looks but some wheels look like they can fit an airbag. If you've got a center cover (or what looks to be a cover), a cop will ask you to take it off to prove it.

But I believe you need some documents for it to be legal. I'm not sure what the process is of obtaining these docs so maybe someone else can help?

It might be in the Department of Transport, or Transport Canada, documents somewhere.

I think disabling any safety-related (or emissions-related, for that matter) equipment on your vehicle is technically illegal. But whether that is enforceable or not in the current system is an entirely different matter.

On the side:
We all have our own opinions of course, but IMHO removing an airbag from your car just for a cosmetic upgrade to your steering wheel is silly. And even if you were going for function (ie. racing), again if this is primarily a "street car", its still a silly thing to do.

There is nothing that I have been able to find about airbags...as they are supplemental safety systems...only the seat belt is required by law. Your insurance company may restrict you, but the law doesn't (or if it does, nobody has been able to find it...provincially or federally).

To that end...if you are the sole person ever to drive your vehicle, you should be fine. However, if you ever have anybody else behind the wheel (even a thief) and they're involved in a collision where the lack of an airbag causes them greater injuries as compared to if there still had been one there, you're screwed in a court of law!

a 4point harness is illegal? is it illegal if it's not mounted to the frame...? just another question

Any harness is illeagal if it hasn't passed the Canadian equivilant of the DOT. It falls under Transportation Canada, but it has some convoluded name. I sure Jimbo could tell us the name.

When I was looking into this about a year ago, one of the requirements for seatbelts is that the retract when not in use. Show me a harness that does that.

Now from a safety standpoint, a 4 point harness is more dangerous than a 3 point seatbelt. In order for the lap belt portion of a harness/seatbelt to work, it must remain in place over the hips. In a 3 point seatbelt, as your upper body is thrown forward, the upper portion of the seatbelt merely tightens the lap portion. In a 4 point harness as your upper body is thrown forward, the shoulder harnesses pull upward on the lap portion moving the lap belt above the hips. In a normal upright seating position the 5th and 6th points on a race harness are not there to stop you from sliding down, but the keep the lap belt from rising up. In a reclining seating position, such as a F1 or Indy car, the 5th and 6th points are there to stop submarining.

so a 5 point is the way to go then? i'll feel like a 5 year old going on like a mini rollercoaster or something. thats awesome

In a racing application I wouldn't go with less than a 6 point harness. On the street the only legal option is a 3 point factory style seatbelt.

ALL harnesses are illegal for street use.

And before anybody asks...no, wearing your 4-, 5-, or 6-point belts in conjunction with the oem 3-point belts isn't legal either.

Time to quell this line of BS. I could shoulder check in my car with a harness on. Some cars you can't some cars you can. It depends on your physical size and the design of the car.

The only reason 4, 5 and 6 point harnesses are not legal is because they don't meet the specifications set out by a department in the Ministry of Transportations. Not because you can't shoulder check. Not because the EMT's wouldn't know how to unbuckle you after an accident. Not for any other reason.

Racing harness? on the street?

Not only is that ghey, your cars arent fast enough anyway. :p

If you feel you need to have this, you car probably isn't streetable to begin with, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Also with a 4 point or higher harness you loose the ability to duck if saw your about to t-bone a semi or hit a deer/Moose on the highway.

Before you laugh quite a while ago here it happened... twice.. first time a feiro hit a moose square between the legs the occupants managed to duck, only tore the top off the car... the next pair wheren't quite so lucky.. they didn't duck and literally lost their heads.
