I find Simple Green works really well to clean.
I use Meg's Hot Shine High Gloss tire spray. It last untill the next wash, it will even last the wash if your don't scrub the tires, in fact, i spray it on my winter/summer to store and it's still shiny when it's time to switch. It leaves no residue on your rims. Will not brown your tires after extended use. It's not a foam so you don't have to wait to drive away. it will not atract dust. About 10 bucks at CT. And it smells nice.:D |

I use meguires HOT RIMS (I think i's called) and it works good for light build up or dirt, but not on grease or heavy brake dust.
I found GUNK (I think) at canadian tire, it's an environmentally safe all-purpose cleaner/de-greaser. It works good on everything, And it seems OK on all finishes and paint. Just rinse it off after.
I have never tried a rim polish
For the tires I use meguires High Shine gel. Not spray. It wipes on, wipes off. Stay's for along time, and is really easy and quick to do. Just wipe off all wet, extra gel, cause it's bad on your paint if it flings off when driving and lands on your car. |

| I have the simoniz(sp?) foam stuff and the Mag Hot Rims or something like that ( the spray one) and i seem to like the simoniz more as it seems to last longer but it gives the tires a much better shine. |

One of the best OTC (over the counter) wheel cleaners is Eagle One's A2Z (in the orange bottle). Its strong enough to do the job and is fairly safe. Its slightly alkaline, as opposed to many out there that are acidic (including Meguiar's Hot Rims). Its a good tire cleaner as well, in addition to cleaning rims.
I noticed everyone seemed to miss the last part of your question. Everyone's giving you tire dressing suggestions, but you asked what to apply to your rims for protection.
If you have clearcoated rims any wax or sealant that you normally use on your paint can be used on your wheels too (but you should use a separate applicator for applying to your rims). If you have polished rims, you can upkeep the shine with a little elbow grease and some metal polish (like Mother's for example). |
