Why don't YOU take it there and drive it back home after the inspection for him. That way there is no chance of him fucking up the car.
Even with a legally binding document, do you honestly think he'll fork out the cash to buy you a new car after writing yours off??? You'll have to take him to court, sue him, and wait on the results/payment if you win!
I would honestly not let them take the car unelss it's paid for in full! I won't let anyone test drive the car without me in it and I usually don't let ppl just test drive the car "in case" - but if you're prepared to take a chance beware of the potential results!
Have him sign something with parties, price, and product, and a stipulation "car is sold and to be paid in cash based on mechanical inspection. Customer is taking car for inspection, but in event the car recieves ANY damage the customer will pay for all repairs at my chosen repair facilities in full."
This is something you'll need legal counsel to write you so it's "fool proof" but clauses are a start to be placing in contract!
Hope this helps. But I still recommend you take it there for him, make time if you don't ahve it b/c that'll be cheaper than letting him write off your car on the extreme. |

Chris is right - no matter what you, there will always be a way around it for him.
You can drive the car there. |

thats understandable, but i mean, if i was going to fork over that kind of money for something i would want to drive it, if he wouldnt let me
a) hes hiding something
b) im not buying it
so i dunno :( |

i have been incountered with this situation before and my answer is it comes and goes only by tow truck no other exceptions.
ive had people come and red line a car i have for sale with me in it and leave without saying a word. generally i woudlnt give out a test drive with out a deposit of some sort nowadays. |

most people are honest, and you can tell if they are there to joyride.
When i sold the integra, the guy who bought it, out right told me he doesnt know how to drive 5spd. SO he brought his friend, i was in the car, his friend drove it, drove it normally, and the car was sold.
I wouldnt let them drive the car without me in there.
Honestly if they start to do something, you do not appreciate, tell them, and if they do it again, inflict physical damage upon them. This is not a joke, because i would, if someone is violating my car. |

Trevor, I agree with you about your points made in your second post.... the difference between letting them test drive the car with you in it and the difference between letting them take off in your car for an extended amount of time could mean a lot.
Also think about this.... what happens if that car is in a hit and run, runs down a pedestrian --- it's YOUR plate, YOU'RE the owner not the guy test driving. Photo radar tickets, again it's your plate on your car and even though you aren't driving you're paying!
I just see too much risk in letting someone take the car. If you can't make it there on the date he needs the car @ the shop - have someone you TRUST take it for you. That will be your next best option... but letting someone you don't know (or hardly know) take it could cost you more than you'd hopped - you may loose the sale but you may still be better off having lost that one sale.... there's always another buyer, maybe one that understands your concerns and where you're coming from?
Does this make sense to you? |

I think ill make it clear to the shop, thoes are my keys, and they must only release the keys to me, no one else. Ill be with him in the car all the time.
So yea.. hopefully he knows how to drive stick .. rofl . or else hes not driving it =) |

here, I will give you the keys to my car, you can "take it for an inspection" and bring it back in 2 days.
Yea ummm, ok...
Well considering that a group of 3 guys could completely gut/strip your car in 3 hours, leave it on the highway, and you get screwed.
Don't trust people man, people are not "mostly honest". |

Simple, YOU drive it to the shop of a mechanic the dude trusts. Wait for inspection/see if the shop will provide you with an alternate mode of transportation. Drive the car home after the inspections done.

Sorry but I don't see anything wrong with redlining a car during a test drive.
Unless there is something wrong with the engine/car that is shown @ redline & you don't want the potential buyer to know....there should be no problem with testing all rev ranges.
In fact, when I test drove my car before buying it, I drove it very hard! How else will you know that it will perform/not break down in the event that extreme driving conditions are needed? I.E. Braking for an emergency
Anyways that's off topic.
clapbak:
the guys have given some good advice, so long as the car is in your name...you call the shots.
if the buyer doesn't like it then don't sell it to them
good luck with it :) |

Same here. When i bought my car i went and gave it a good run with plenty of trips to redline. i figure if the car is in good shape it should be able to see some abuse without even blinking. |

| ^That may hold true if I chose to buy a car from a dealership. However if someone wanted to redline my car I would not allow it in fear of him/her missing the shift. I would glady demonstrate for them while they are in the car though with me driving. |

yea i drove it there to get it inspected.. once thats done ill let him drive it around for a bit with me in it..
i told him no funny shit when he drives it.. lol

Exactly, not to mention if the dropped the clutch, couldn't shift worth shit, did a burnout on your good tires, grinded the shift from 1st to second at 8000 RPMS...not to mention just sitting there bouncing off the rev limiter (or in the cases of cars without rev limiters, just over-revving the engine).
Not everyone can drive a car well, and a complete stranger should not be redlining your car. You don't know them, you don't know how well they drive...and if they feck up your clutch during a test drive because they are riding it to redline then your stuck with a big repair bill and the guy doesnt buy your car.
Take them for a spin by all means, and push it so hard that they shit their pants...its your car, you know how to push it.
Truth be told, I didn't test drive my car before I bought it, I talked to the guy, gave him cash, drove off. Couldnt be happier. |

Once the car has been inspected by a proffesional, make the potential buyer leave a deposit contingent on a satisfactory test drive.
Basically, if he abuses the car and it survives he is obligated to buy it, he has no excuse not to if it has already passed the inspection. |

| passed the inspection as expected.. alls it needs is a new tire rod (right frount) easy fix.. :P |
