Import only? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Murph
First off, I am not sure if this belongs in this section, and I know alot of people will say domestics are welcome, and I always read that on the board. However i have shown up before, and with the exception of two or three people i always get the cold shoulder from everyone. The only reason i can think it happens is well because i drive a Mustang and also am part of another club. (Which i have over heard people at UC bad talking them for showing up there.) So really all i want to know is if I show up UC this year from time to time, am I gonna get the cold shoulder again? or can i meet with car people who share the same hobby and will talk cars no matter what they own.

sorry if this seems too much of a rant.

Well first off. The meet is not just for imports. Its for all car enthousiasts. The only reason theres alot of imports there is because alot of the guys with imports are friends and the meets originate off of this Forum.

We have a few guys that come out with domestics. eg. Old Raven, Trevor in his Chevy Truck, Jay in his Cheroke.

If you get the cold sholder just hang around with some other people. We are a pretty tight group but new people are always welcome to come out. Just dont be a douche bag. And be able to take some Mustang hating once in a while.

REFLUX
Also keep in mind that there are 2 meets during the week.

Wednesdays
- 7PM
- 97St and 137Ave, in Wendy's parking lot.

Fridays
- 9PM
- 103St and 78Ave, near United Cycle

Though the Wed meets haven't really started up yet, when I went last year I saw that everyone had someone to talk to. Was a fairly large crowd so it can't be expected that EVERYONE talks to everyone else :)

One last but important point, being social/sociable means both parties have to be willing to interact. It may seem intimidating to speak up to a larger group of ppl but if you don't, they may think YOU'RE the snob ;)

Come to the meets & introduce yourself, talk with the ppl there, check out their rides, etc. If ppl don't come and talk with you, go talk with them :)

Um... i would like to state that friday nights at United Cycle is NOT an official 780 meet. The friday night meets were pretty much set up by people like myself, aaron (DC5PWR), Matt(95IntegraRS) and Matt (Chrome Dragon).

There was no official thing here on 780 tuners claiming that they were starting meets on fridays like they did for Wednesdays @ Wendys.

I have no problem with them being used as a 780 meet.

Murph, I know what you mean. Some of these guys can be a little defensive about their rides but you've gotta realize that they are probably just as apprehensive about talking to you about your car. Just walk up to someone and talk to them about their car. When I'm out at the meets I tend to try and talk to people that I don't know as well as the people that I do know.

The biggest thing is just stepping up and talking to someone. Most of the guys out there respect any car so long as the driver has respect for it. If you see me out at the meet next week come up and say hi. I'm the big guy driving the multi-grey-tone '84 300zx Turbo.

Matt

P.S. I'm guessing you're talking about the WPCC being the unwelcome club. That's just not so. I'm a member over there also and I hope to see more and more of them out at the regular meets and cruises.

Murph,
Were you the owner of the black Mustang I was talking with at the non-meet tonight?
If so, you seem to have respect for most things automotive so I don't see you haveing trouble interacting with anybody at any of the meets.
Hope to see more people out next friday.

Markgase2000
I enjoyed meeting some people but theres some kids that will pick on us domestic drivers. I brought my GA out last week and all I got from most people was "why dont you trade it in for a import" well its a custom ride so trading it wont be easy. Plus I like it if they dont like it my new attitude will be "you dont like it? hmmmmm that's too bad :)"
I feel the same way , they say Domestics owners are welcome but alot of the members try to minimize the domestic owners turn out by posting put downs.

Fair enough, I've edited my post. :dunno:

Markgase2000:
You also have to understand that one person's experiences can not & will not reflect the experiences of everyone else.
Everyone is different so they will see these "put downs" or "jokes" in a different light.

Please do not turn this into a domestic vs. import discussion.

2003specv
I don't care what you drive as long as it can burn the tires down to the cords..... it's cool with me.:D

Not at UC though.

PraxRX7
You respect your car, you respect my car, I respect you.

I have no problems with domestics at all.

I don't go to many of the meets though anymore.

I happened upon a domestic meet one time, went to talk to the guys, they wouldn't even give me the time of day simply because I drove an import. Guy drove a really nice 70's fastback of some sort with 400+ wide hossier drag rubber on the back (not street legal tires).

There does seem to be a bit of a grudge import vs domestic, but I think it only exists in the retards who didn't grow up past high school.

Thats my $1.50 (inflation has gone up, $0.02 just doesnt cover it)

SilverNeonRacer
I drive a neon.. well thats kinda obvious... I showed up on the 8th and didn't have any probs. Tis some what clicky, but what group isn't. i was actually shocked i didn't hear any neon put downs while I was there.. shoot the neon groups put neons down too.

Mustangs are cool, well ok.. the pinto mustangs are crap, but the real mustangs are cool.

You have a Black Mustang , a GT Im gonna guess. Thats a kick ass real mans car IMO and I welcome its presence at the meets :) hopefully you got some goodies to show me  cus the Wild Horse is awesome and must be respected. :drama: I cant wait to get mine , I will be burried in it when I die!
:p to all that dont like the wonderfull versatile mustangs :)
Be there!

Well fuck man.. if ur like.. i want a 300ZX so bad... and i say.. so why don't u sell that grand am and buy one.. and then u say i have other rides too.. well fuck.. pick what u want.. dont' go saying u want a 300ZX when u won't even try selling ur other cars.

Yea i think u followed me to the west ed meet last saturday? I didn't mind... newer neon is totally different from the old crappy ones. Anyhow.. it's not my style.. but i had no problem with you showing up.. i think u had a pretty decent system too?

SilverNeonRacer
Ya that was me.. my system was sucking at WEM. I think I need to build a new box. I think I caught up to you at Anthony henday, I was gonna pass on the bridge, but a cop merged off of fox drive there.

Ya the newer neons, well the 01-R/Ts and 02s i find are classier then the other neons.

I like it, but I dunno it's the wife's, the only reason why I had an LE was cause the dealership managed to get me financing on it. I'm torn, to me a small SUV like a Pajero is more prectical to my life style, but a Import rice racer would be funner. the Neon is fun too, just needs alot more power and handling.

back to the topic on Hand, I'm a member of Neon Canada as well.. I've starten to fall away from them mainly cause i think I'm like the only Paid member in Northern Alberta. But we had meets and stangs and J bodies and grand ams show up, no biggie.

similar type of cars cruising is cool, like last year's Apex Dyno meet for the SRT4s, we went for a cruise after and we had like 7srt4s, a couple first gens and me... and you could tell we were a group cruising,

JdmCrx
Why not sell that neon and get a SRT-4? If.. neons are your thing.... either way.. thanks for not merging ur neon with my rear bumper..

SilverNeonRacer
Cause it's not my neon, it's the Wife's. if i buy her a tacoma i can have the neon. I have a diesel pickup truck that died on me. i used to have my own neon.

Well what she wants doesn't exsist. she wants a new old school durango, with a 4.7L and a 5spd.. cept durango's never came in 5spd.. mtx that is.

Also for the cost of trading the Neon in for an SRT4 or selling the neon, etc, etc i could build up the Neon to be better than a stock SRT4.

Actually if i wanted to go for a speed car.. or a toy so to speak, I'd start with a 93 Suzuki Swift GTi Back in the days before I knew better, I would kill stangs quite often with my Swift GS, i took on a GTi once... I was barely 60ft and he was gone.

personally I have no afiliation so to speak between brands, every manufacture has a car I hate, or strongly dislike, and every manufacture has a car i propbably like, I just may not know it yet.

What are you talking about? Not everyone can just sell what they have and pick something else up.

I wan't a Ferrari F355, selling my 300zx isn't exactly going to bring me close enough to pick one up next week.

Just because you want a car down the road doesn't mean you can't enjoy driving what you have now. I do intend to pick up a Cosmo(although this stupid 6-week-no-pay internship is going to interfere with that), but I'm not going to go selling my car right now in the hopes of being a couple thousand closer.

Are you saying that you're content with your CRX, that you wouldn't like anything else?

JdmCrx
Well the owner.. has more than 1 vehicle.. you can only drive one at a time.. why not sell those off.. and get the car u actually want.

Markgase2000
I have a GF she sometimes needs a car :) I only got 2 cars in Edmonton. (Tempo-Commuter saves me money) I got a mess of fixer uppers at the farm. Im letting the gfs dad and sister part them out or sell them as is.
After I am out of debt I will be looking to get a fixer upper Import that I could restore one I am interested in particular was the 300zx but also looking at 200sx-240sx's and beemers (80's2-4doors) that was what I was thinking of doing.

^^^^ I think explaining this and arguing this in this thread has resulted in a hijack and we shouldnt be doing that in here heck I dont wanna argue about it at all Im embarassed enough as it is I hate money issues.

not "clicky" just alot of us have known eachother for years.. kinda hard just to walk up to a guy you havnt seen before and start a conversation.

JdmCrx
Not really.. i walked up to tons of people and started talking... we all got something in common.. cars. Rest are just details.

2HIGH~PSI
well all the meets on friday and saturday night used to be a BP's on jasper ave. This was mostly all of the car guys in edmonton getting together, a mix of domestics and imports.... being a gravel yard, and the torque heads that alot of domestic guys are, they started smoking their tires, and shooting rocks at alot of the beautifully airbrushed and well taken care of imports.

The import guys were not impressed and decided to find a new parking lot, a meeting place where there was no gravel...

thus The UC parking lot evolved as the new meeting place...

and it was mostly the imports that went there, while BP's evolved into a more domestic oriented meet.

So if you come to UC with a "beefed" up mustang, of course you are welcome, we welcome everyone,

but its just the past issues with those guys causing damage to other vehicles makes a few people weary.

We all respect people who respect their cars, and make it a passion that alot of us on these boards share, which is why when we meet at UC we still cruise over to BP's to see who is there that we can shoot the shit with..

I kinda had the same experience. I tried talking to a couple people but as you say, " the cold shoulder" was there. Oh well ,,,

Maybe all the domestics should get a meet going?????
Whaddya think????

TTYL,

No-Pistons
come out to UC. I think the biggest problem was that the domestics would bash other guys cars. I remember a few guys laughing at my old fc. But i was just getting started out with the hole car seen.

SaabKraft
i'd like to start coming to meets alot more often, but i have this vague notion of being at a loss because the car being restored and modified is back at the house, and i'd just be showing up in an old beater.

but on the other hand, the beater is considered a sports car, and even if it's just franken-stock, outdated and well worn, maybe i can find some other aged performance cars to blend in with. I just need get out to meet some of you guys, and hopefully learn some new stuff, especially from any RX-7 owners.

I showed up in a pretty much stock 02 Neon R/T.. so umm ya... Somebody showed up in a Tempo, and another a grand am. So i don't think it's an issue

Markgase2000
Ya I think I been just too flaky lately with social events. I get nervous I dunno what to say to people. I had the Grand Am and Silver had the Neon and one big fella had the tempo , I think the guy with the Tempo was awesome he had the coolest sense of humor  fuck I was laughing so hard I swear I was drinking. Ill try to loosen up for the next meet I guess I been a lil touchy on alot of stuff lately. Fuck I hate spring  mostly all I think about is titties and ass I cant concentrate on cars. Its like what the fuck do I gotta walk about all hunched up all the time?

lol, my RX7 has about 20 years on your neon...

but yeah, it's not a huge deal. and when (if) i ever get my 900 done to spec, then i'll have something pretty unique to bring :)

I only brought the Neon cause it's what I'm driving, it's the wife's not mine.. If my truck(in my sig) was still alive I woulda been driving that.

oldraven
Just show, man. I found it a little intimidating to jump in, but once you pop the hood, it's usually pretty easy to get talking.

I remember a quote 'You make more friends in an hour by talking about them than you will in a year talking about yourself.' Or something like that. Just pop your head under the first open hood and start asking questions. Heck, man, you know what meets are about.

If an 18yo T-bird can fit in with this crowd (well, fit in to an extent, welcome is a better word) a mustang will in a heartbeat. :)

Heck, I may actually show up in the 1/2 tonne next time. :p We'll see how that goes down.

midnite
also remember, as the weather gets nice and more people make it out, there will be a more diverse crowd and many new people to talk with.

a number of the people who show up every week have known each other for years and have history, so it can be a little cliquey, but from what i've seen they welcome anyone.

maybe bring a friend to make it easier, but remember it's a social event, so get out and socialize! that's what it's all about :)

You also have to remember that talking with people involves TWO or more parties.
If ppl show up & just stay off to the side waiting for others to approach them...it may not ever happen!

Like I've said before, introduce yourself, check out some cars, shoot the shit & relax.

Of course it is easier said than done but don't go about thinking it's some kind of "clique" car meet when you haven't even made an effort to generate conversation :)

Come say hi, no harm in doing say

Kris
Just go approach people and statr talking about their car or something it is a great way to get talking.

SilverNeonRacer
What i did was i found a group, just stood there and listened and when I had something to say.. I piped up... and hoped i didn't make an ass outta myself... seems pretty good. by clique i ment I noticed there seemed to be 3 groups that primarily hung out together and a larger group that kinda migrated.

Do we need to even have this thread? I just started hanging out with this group last year, all it requires is to talk to them, and take the occasional insult. Honda guys get it all the time, I can think of three phrases I've heard over 100 times. Poking fun at someone isn't the same as insulting them. You drive a neon, mustang, grand am, whatever. It has four wheels and an engine. You enjoy it, want to hang out and go for a cruise, your welcome in my books.

So everyone better be out this friday then right?!?!

It's a buick they are available with a 5L --> 302ci. engine. 1984 Park Avenue Electra, also came with a diesel version.

How about a 305 instead. 302 is a Ford. The 'mighty' five point oh.

Alright, I knew it wasn't a 305. That's what I thought at first then when I went to buy the stuff for an oil change I didn't know what the hell was going on. I had no idea that Buick's had different engines until this past winter. Are there different engines in Caddys and Oldsmobiles too?
