Well, last year I bought a set of Cusco upper front & rear strut bars for my 5th gen prelude. The strut mounting points were anodized blue but were in poor condition with rust forming.
So, I decided to re-paint them to colour match my lude, sweet satin silver. I grinded all the paint to bare metal, applied several coats of rustclad primer, applied 3-4 coats of rustclad silver paint, and applied a 2-3 coats of clearcoat.
Since the strut mounting brackets didn't fit perfectly, I managed to damage the areas around the bolt holes. When installing them, the strut bolt thread caught the edge of the hole and chipped some of the paint away. Even when I torqued the bolts down, they dug into the paint and chipped some away.
I'm thinking that all of that hard work was a big waste since the paint didn't adhere to the metal like I had thought. It's almost brittle and can be easily chipped.
What can I do to correct this problem? Should I try to re-paint them with different paint during the winter or get them done professionally.
If I was to get them done by a professional, where would I take them? Would I take them to a body shop or a metal fabrication shop. They will need to be sandblasted, primed, & top coat.
Also, to get metal pieces anodized, is it relatively expensive and does anyone know a shop that actually does this?
Your help would be greatly appeciated. |

Maybe some place can powder coat it for you?
I unfortunately do not know who can powder coat it for you, and I don't really know what powder coating is...
:fingersx: But maybe just the idea would help you out. :D |

Poweder coating will work for sure. Or you can ask them to put some sort of elastic compound into it.
One option might be the truck bed material, it wont be shiny but it will stick. |

| try putting a washer on the bolt (get a stainless steel washer so it wont rust and it will look good). This way, when you tighten the bolt, you wont be touching the paint at all with the bolt, just the washer, and the washer wont turn at all when you tighten it. |

I was thinking of that but there really isn't much thread left once the bracket and nuts are installed.
I'm going to check out that Supreme Plating and see how much it would cost to re-paint the brackets. If it's going to cost me too much, then I'll re-paint them myself and try not to apply too much paint.
When it's time for the install, I'll try to find a very thin washer to place between the bracket and the nut. |

| Get them plated but just a tip. When installing the parts agian but some greese on your parts it will keep any chipping from happening on any painted or coated suface. Realy coat them make a mess! and when your done just wipe them clean and you will be happy. |

I don't think I want to get them plated, like chrome or anything like that due to the cost. However, I really like the powder coating idea.
As for who to talk to, I called the shop and the secretary gave me a guys name, Gary. Ring any bells Eric? |

Decided to go ahead with the powder coating of my strut mounting brackets since the price was reasonable. I just hope they turn out okay.
They should be done by next week and I'll let you know how they turn out. Thanx for the tip Eric! |
