What are the pottentials this car has?

2.5L Single over head cam (SOHC), 16 valves, 4 banger
165hp @ 5,600
166lb-ft @ 4,000

Onlything that bugs me is the SOHC. Would be a way better tuning car if it was a DOHC

Not much. Just buy a used wrx turbo. It will be way funner.

Or get a 2000 Impreza 2.5 RS GC8 body style and turbo it, I think its really unique too with the two door and you can go for a 22b build for it, I think its 260 bhp and 250 lb-ft torque, don't quote me on that though. There's some nice aero kits for the GC8 style too, Prodrive has some neat looking functional kits and C-west has some nice kits too. The P1 kit is really nice and functional too, with a little money you can make a 2.5rs GC8 into a rather quick car.

I think you can import a JDM WRX engine for under $3,000.
Who cares about that 2.5L SOHC!! For the price of doing any significant mods, you could effectively double the horsepower with a tweeked WRX engine. Or you could splurge and get a STI engine, but they are closer to $5,000 or more I think.
Anyway, the cost of a decent turbo kit would be $3,000-$5,000 so you might as well look into getting a WRX engine, even if you don't tweek it, it will still be 30% more power. chances are you could get the matching drivetrain with the engine too.
That would be sweet!

$3,000 for the motor then you gotta' do transmission work which will cost a bit more, you'll be spending more time working on the car than driving it IMO. In the end might as well just get a WRX. But just play around with the motor they're not too bad, you can get some decent power by just turbocharging it and some work on the motor, the 2000 2.5rs isn't that heavy either so it'll go pretty quick.

Oh im not getting a subaru any time soon i just bougth a car not too long ago MX-6 just wondering what people thought of the car

Imprezzme_STi
2.5rs is the low of the low end of the Impreza line up, more or less for people who care less about performance. I LOVE the old GC8 body styles though!

JDM engine swaps are very expensive for this car. you need to buy more than just an engine. They did come with DOHC but only in 1998 and had the same HP and torque. Turbo kits are available but are not very reliable.

I drive a 2004 2.5rs almost daily and find it to be pretty decent. It is by no means fast but it stills has a bit of pick up.One thing I would suggest doing right away would be to get rid of the stock tires. They are absolute pieces of shit.

Also, from what ive heard, there is a hell of a lot of wiring needed to upgrade to the WRX or STI motor. Whats wrong with SOHC though? You can still do mod it up and make it powerful. DOHC will net you more numbers but what numbers are you looking at the inf first place?

Imprezzme_STi
Subaru stock tires overall are crap except for the ones on the STi, the tires on the Legacy are garbage, can't utilize the AWD to its fullest extent because the tires is holding the car back on handling and what not...

Oh im not buying the 2.5 RS or thinking to i just wanted to see what people thought of this car and what they think they can get out of that SOCH

Hehe Id say go for it. Id love to use one for a daily driver in the winter. Course I am a sucker for AWD though.

I bought a 05RS, I like it as a commuter car. As a tuner car, the used WRX would be more practical IMO.

The 2.5L SOHC has quite a bit more potential than people let on. Because the car wasn't very popular until the WRX and STi came to North america finding the right parts can sometimes be a challenge. I drive a 99RS and I know several other people that drive the GM6 or GC8 style of the MY98-01. One of the guys bought a WRX engine and several upgrades for that and dumped it into his 99RS. That car is pretty quick and feels like a factory install. One of the other guys I know has a MY00 RS and he's done a COMPLETE turbo build. Last I heard he was reaching 400HP to the floor. I know for a fact that if you turbo a stock RS witha simple, basic turbo kit you can easily get ~250HP out of it. At this point you've spent about 3K-4K and you can easily beat WRXs since you are lighter. I've also heard of (not seen) 2.5L SOHC engines built up to 700-800HP. It can be done, just a bit more expensive than a civic, miata, eclipse, talon, etc...

The whole point to this blurb? "TONS of potential, as long as you've got money."

Don't most people with a GC8 immitate the 22B?

Surprisingly, no. Most people with a gc8/gm6 like their cars the way they are OR try to go with a JDM STI ver VII or VIII. The guys that go after the 22B stuff have a little bit more money to spend than most other RS owners do.
