Problem w/ Ultrastart Alarm System - Click HERE for Original Thread

testingcheck
I have had a Ultra Start Alarm 2way Alarm system. My battery for the LCD remote always dies in about a week or two. Is this normal for a LCD remote or is the remote malfunctioned? It is very annoying. I would not recommend anyone to get one.

Heh, for that same reason, I keep a spare battery in all my jackets, at work, in my car...EVERYWHERE. It is the biggest POS.
By the way Costco sells 40 packs of these batteries.

:thumbsdow

Kiddo
dont use the cheap batteries :P or buy rechargables one of my friends change is battery every 2-3 months with that remote

testingcheck
But the question was "is it normal for these remotes?

98 teg
yup I have one of those tow mine last 3 weeks

Kiddo
Well most of these 2 ways will last based on the type of battery you use, a dollar store or super store battery (alkaline) ones will last a lot shorter then something like one of the top line Energizers that are nickel metal hydride

I used to have a compustar unit and I only remember replacing once over a 2 year period... well, maybe twice.

I have a compustar installed a couple of months ago (apprx. 2 1/2) batter shows as full still and its passed 3 weks by far.

I think my friend 3gec was talking about this same alarm system thats caused him problems he now has a compustar.

yes very very tru.
I have had my compustar since I think like july or August and haven't had to change the battery yet. As for The Ultra Mine would stop responding with my car all the time. It was the worst alarm system ever. The battery only lasted a month if I was lucky and that was with the system not working all the time. Or it might have been the install I don't know. In the end it got fixed with the Compustar which I am very pleased with.

Well the battery should last longer than a week. Keep in mind the display is always on and everytime you use the remote it has to backlight the display. I'm sure it takes a bit of power to transmit and receive. But if your battery only last a week or two I would take it in, it should last for a lot longer than that.

this prob happens to 2 ppl i know

certified gave em new remotes no prob

Hot_Wheelz
the battery in the 2 way remote that comes in the remote from the "factory" is shit.. mine only lasted about 2 and 1/2 weeks.. but i installed my starter in November and its april and im still on the same battery.. im guessing you bought the Ultra start at certified radio.. so just drop in and ask if its normal or if they'll warrenty the remote for a new one beacause you think there's something wrong with it.. they may tell you sorry just keep replaceing the batterys or they might give you a different one. Try and see :dunno:

one of the big things that kills the batterys in the UltraStart is the two way, the thing with the Ultra is that is is a true two way it is in constant communication all the time where as the CompuStar / Viper / Astro is only a polling remote. In laymans terms the CompuStar / Viper / Astro only communicates to the remote when you ask it to where as the Ultra is always monitoring what is happening with the car.

Ralphie,

I had you guys install my 2-way (4560xr)

And my clock all the sudden went for a total dump, like it can't keep acurate time anymore...

For example I will set the time to my phone at 9:00am, at 9:00am the next day it will read something like 9:24 and it just gets worse.

It was installed about a year ago, would my remote still be covered under warranty? I don't know if it's a coincidence but it started eating batteries as soon as the clock started going south, it's kind of frusterating to spend $$$ on a alarm/starter just for the remote to go goofy on me.

thanks

Transporter
i use black widow 2way am system and my battery has not died and it has been a year but i will change it cause it has been a year kind like when u change ur somke alram and monoxide batteries with every daylight saviing time change.

but i think it is not normal for batteries to dies so quickly

lowryder99
Well the system I have from ultrastarters is a FM so I know that draws a lot more power than the AM models, but I can still tell since my clock went goofy that the batteries started getting eaten up a lot faster...that part like you said is not normal....I know because I have had this unit for a year now.

CJDP
it's not normal go to certified they gave me a new remote and everything seems to be fine

Ralphie,

In the event that something happens to the vehicle - door is ajar'd, trunk ajar'd, hood popped, shock sensor triggered, car started, the brain sends a signal to the remote when it happens, so is there really any benefit with having constant communication between the two? I fail to see the point. Thanks for any info.

Well I had the CompuStar 2WSS-AS the top of the line model from CS my biggest problem with it was the remote I went through 6 remotes in 4 1/2 months, The next problem I had was the transmitting range of the unit, I tested mine while it was in my car with the Cobra GPS500 hand held GPS, a buddy, and a couple GMRS radios. On remote start the unit was great I was getting consistant 3800ft on remote start and on start confirmation however on full alarm and warn away I was only getting pages on full alarm at about 1800-2100 ft with a fairly long delay and I was only getting warn away alerts at about 1000ft.

In comparison with the ultrastart u4560xr top of the line US I was getting around 8000ft consistant page back with the start and full alarm (only about 4500ft on warn away) and I got as a record start with confirmation just a little bit over 10 000 ft (antenna on the chin and all :) ) The nice thing with the US is because it is constantly comunicating with the car you get a much more reliable page back.

Now with the remotes If you are going through a battery in a week THERE IS A PROBLEM IN THE REMOTE. The first 2way remotes were polling with the car at intervals of 5 seconds the new version of the remote polls with the car at intervals of about 25 seconds. If you have a remote that is eating batterys come and see me and I will give you a new one at no charge as long as it is not trashed.

Ralph,

My remote is in decent shape only has one small crack in the top, it's never been dropped and I have NO idea how it got there but it's really small none the less.

Can I still get it swapped? It's actually been not bad with the batterys for a bit but it's still eating through them faster than it used to , along with my clock that's still totally messed up hah!

Dopey88
ya just swing by and I can swap the remote for you.

Ralphie
