Hey I would like to learn how to glass vinyl interiors. I want to know what to make molds out of for customizing interiors? How do you reverse a mold so its the same from one side to another? Will the glass adhere to the vinyl or exterior body parts say if I wanted to add small augmentations to the existing vinyl or add some custom ground effects , cowls or hood scoops? Will it shrink?
Any advice and personal experiences would be great. |

| I have experience with fiberglassing its not easy. Thats why it costs a arm and a leg when you get it proffesionally done. What exatally do you want to do? Depending on what it is it would take alot of time and effort if its something small then try it your self but if you want to get crazy and redo like the whole dash i suggest start saving some money and let a proffesional do it |

It's not hard persay, just takes alot of time and patience. As far as making the glass not stick to the think you want to take a mold off, there's a waxy break-away thing, i can't remeber hte name, basically you coat the thing you want to take a mold of with it, let it setup, then you glass ontop of it, do a couple layers so your mold is solid, pull your mold of the original, then you reverse is, coat the inside of your mold and then glass in there.
It is very very time consuming until you get very proficiant at it. |

| Making the mold would be the hard part and very time consuming. I heard of one guy that was going to redo his dash and he said that he was going to make a mold of the stock dask and modify it where he wanted. To make the stock mold he said that he was going to get some chicken fence and mold that around the contours and then lay the fibergalss on that. |

I made a hood scoupe once and I made my mold outta styrofoam insulation, glued a couple pieces toegether and then carved out the shape I wanted, layed 3mm poly on it and glassed on the poly, somehow, I'm guessig the heat from the curing process melted the foam and made a mess of the scoupe. |

Yeah the heat that the fiberglass puts off will melt it i use heavy duty garbage bags they work great. |

It's usually a mix of what products work best for you.
If you contact Viking Plastics, they have literally EVERYTHING you need for your experimentation projects. From the different types of fibreglass, to resins for casting, to release agents.
I have made guage pods with little else with stiff cardboard cutouts, an old t-shirt stretched over a skeleton of either wire or strips of cardboard to form the rough shape, Glass it, then use filler to fill in all the holes and sand smooth.
It sounds easy, like everyone mentioned, it requires monumental patience, alot of time waiting to cure, and good old fashioned elbow grease. |

And u can check out this website it gives u step by step of making molds and fiberglassing things. http://web.njit.edu/~cas1383/proj/main/ |

When you get there, just tell him what you're upto and he'll be able to suggest and sell you anything from a tin to a tub.
He helped me pick a casting resin when I was making solid motor mounts as well. |
