well, i finally managed to get my FB up on ramps to change the oil... it had only been driven twice since i bought it, but man, it was like texas crude coming out of there. so now with a fresh helping of non-synthetic, not only does it start easier, it just drives much smoother in general.
i'm really impressed with this car, and i think i'm falling in love! for only 100-120 hp (rebuilt 12A, may have had some porting done), it has quite a bit of pep... now it's no longer a seasonal beater, but a mini-project in itself.
it's a 1982 model with a swapped in posi-trac rear end.
the 2 main things i'd like to address next are the exhaust and rear end... the exhaust itself is stock, but has a really loud, metallic gurgle to it, especially at low revs and when idling. i think it's nearing the end of it's life, and i'd like to know what i could replace it with... racing beat seems a little pricey, i'm guessing my best bet is just to get a 2" system fabricated by a local shop? muffler suggestions welcome.
as well, (especially with icey ruts), the rear end makes a clunking noise when hitting bumps, and bounces noticeabley... new shocks were installed before i bought the car, but it's probably on old springs, bumpstops and bushings. i'd hope replacing these would help the problem or is the body design/fabrication/material just known to be a little rattly on rough surfaces?
aaaand lastley, just general suspension reccomendations would be appreciated (addition/deletion of sway bars, strut tower brace, etc). i'm just looking to refine the exhaust note and tighten up the ride a bit.
i think i'm a rotary convert :) |

hey, nice to see another emonton first gen owner, I have the same suspension problem you are talking about... I splurged this winter and bought myself the whole racingbeat system... After seeing the quality of the product I wouldnt hesitate to buy it again, don't go for a cheap knock off aka monza. The whole system is very heavy duty and ment to withstand the heat of the rotary, most other exhausts cant and burn up rather quickly. I am interested though in learning what the thumping noise is, I was thinking of changing all of the springs and all the struts hoping that would make all the difference but I have yet to...
Oh and I should mention I recommend racing beat for anything you need, the only problem is duty charges. On my $900 exhaust duty was about $175. For suspension products I would get the racing beat front sway bar, get racing beat springs, get the tokico hps or illumina's from ebay (good prices with buy it now just for our car), this setup is supposed to handle amazingly... |
