My friends have been hearing how I've been just getting into Doom 3 (I'm totally hooked btw), and playing in total darkness with headphones on... and its been scaring the bejeezus out of me!!
Especially if my wife has come in and out of the room making background noise, or accidently bumping my chair... I just about go through the roof.
Anyone who's played Doom 3, especially on high detail, knows what I'm talking about. :p
Anyway, one of my friends sent me this link today:

| Haha when it came out in August I would specifically wait till night time to boot it up, slap on the headphones and play. It sent me jumping more than a few times, specially the part with the crying babies. |

Doom 3 was an utter dissapointment for me. No ragdoll physics, no interactive/reactive environment (shoot out a light, it just makes a bullet mark on the 2d texture). Disintegrading sprites, weak textures, incomplete bump maps......meh just not my cup of tea. I like games like FarCry with fully interactive environment, smart AI sprites, vehicles, and a multitude of different ways to take out an enemy.
I wasn't happy with it at all, and yes, I was playing at pretty much max graphics settings. |

For me it was the first time you get assulted by the spiders... They were suddenly everywhere and swarmed you. And that first time I was trying to use the shotgun... which is useless against them, too slow! Once I figured out you needed a rapid-fire weapon, I was fine... they still creep me out though. |

That's too bad. :( For me, I'm just finally catching up in the world of PC Games... just did my first real platform upgrade in 7 years, so it was long overdue. I haven't had a chance to play many of the other new games out there. To me Doom 3 is jaw-dropping gorgeous (in a grotesque kind of way obviously).
I heard Far Cry is good too, and Half-Life 2, and Painkiller, and a bunch of others.... But the whole point of Doom 3 is the horror aspect. They got the atmosphere down pat IMHO. Creeping along in the dark, fumbling for your flashlight, checking the shadows, and AAAHHHH!!! |

If you google "ducttape mod" you'll find atleast two types of mods for this game.
Ducttape meaning, since you're this ultra resourceful marine, you take your flashlight and about 3 feet of ducttape and strap your flashlight to the weapon.
Some flashlight mods add to a few weapons, most add a flashlight to all weapons.
The mods I like to run are the ducttape, and another mod that increases the capacity of the weapon magazines, and a sound mod that changes the weapon effects.
Painkiller was ok, the graphics were quite good and where this game excelled in was the music, very top notch. But it was lacking something. It just seemed to play out rather boring. |

Tell me you at least played the game through once without cheating.... :p
One of the running jokes in many online and magazine reviews of Doom 3 was how come this Mars base has tonnes and tonnes of chainsaws, but nobody saw fit to order any ducttape?! |

If you'll pardon the pun, Hell yeah.
Took me friggin forever. When I first got it it took me like a month playing solid to finish it.
Damn monsters are tough to kill on the harder levels.
Wasn't till afterwards I discovered the neat stuff you can do.
Not as much cool stuff as there was on the old Doom in terms of mods though. |

as for max graphics go. there is no hardware on the market that can play the doom3 engine on max settings.
you need a gig of total video memory or something stupid like that.
so what all of us saw is not even close to what the eninge itself can do! just wait tell the quake2 remake, aka quake4. there will be some crazy eyecandy in that game. |

I'm running 1280x1024 at "high" detail.
I initially tried 1280x1024 on "ultra high" but found it would start chugging a bit when I was attacked by imps, etc. So then I dropped it down to 1024x768 on "ultra high" still, then "high", then upped it back to 1280x1024 on "high"... runs fine, but yeah I think you need a monster card to run on "ultra high" detail at 1280x1024 or higher.
I've got an Athlon64 3200 w/ 1GB ram and an Nvidia 6600GT.
I haven't done any timedemos yet to test my actual framerates. |

I finally finished Doom 3 the other day.
It didn't really take me all this time since I last posted in this thread. I actually got stuck on the hell level and couldn't kill the Guardian. So I left the game alone for a couple weeks, and then tried again after my brother gave me a tip to try the chaingun to kill the seekers... I was trying to use the plasma gun (one of my favorites) previously and couldn't seem to hit shit with it... those pesky little seekers seemed to drop much more readily with the lead spray. :D
Anyway, after returning from hell, it didn't take me too long to finish the rest of the game but damn there were some tough parts. Some of the final levels down in the caverns and the archelogical dig were simply gorgeous... amazing detail and lighting, etc.
I loved the finale... tres cool!
BTW, the thing that always freaked me out the most in the game was those bloody spider things (Trites?).
Can't wait to play the expansion now, but I'm going to wait a bit... either try a couple other games, or enjoy the outdoors more now that the weather's here, or both. :p |
