Underground spinklers - Click HERE for Original Thread

SilverZ24
I'm hoping someone here has some experience with them...

I just had a new house built and now I have to do the landscaping and one of the things I want is an underground sprinkler system.

Can anyone give me some good/bad comments about owning them? Anyone have a good experience with a certain company or person doing the planning and install? Anything I should avoid or make sure I do?

And finally, how do I convince my wife that it is a good idea to spend over a grand (I'm assuming) for something that can can be done by a $20 sprinkler. :D

Insomniac
off topic, but I find sprinklers to be the most vain and wasteful things on the planet

LOL You might be right, but I still like a nice green lawn. :)

And I wouldn't be surprised if an hour or so a week of watering the lawn would still use less water than my wife filling the jacuzzi just once. lol

Oh, and you would probably have like my grandfather. He had huge containers that collected the water run off from the roof of his house and his sprinkler system used a pump in the container to water the grass. Just over 10 years in the house and he didn't once use tap water to water the lawn and he had one of the nicest looking yards in the neighborhood. :)

I have them in my yard and love them.

I set the timer to come on at 4am in the mornings, waters the lawn when it's SUPPOSED to be watered.

Remember, watering the lawn at 12pm on Friday afternoon isn't doing it any good....

The only thing I don't like, is I can't aeorate (the thing where you dig the little holes - I probably spelled it wrong) the lawn.

As well, if you get them remember to get them blown out before winter....

SilverZ24
^ Yeah I know about the times. At my old place I used to turn on the sprinkler right when I woke up at 6am and then turn it off when I left for work around 45 minutes later. I easily had the best lawn on the block.

It depends on your position. If you plan on living there 20 years I would go for it just because of the time saved. If you are going to move in a couple of years you will not see a full return on your money when you sell it.

Well in case anyone is interested, I have decided to go ahead with it. I really underestimated the cost of them though, just under 3 grand for the front and back yard, fully automatic, and the rain sensor.

Oh, and TrevorK - they said that I can still aeorate, as long as I try to stay at least 6" from where all the heads are. The lines will be 8-10" underground though so I don't have to worry about hitting them. :)

Should be pretty nice once it is done. And weather permitting, it will be finished next week along with my lawn.

Deck was finished a week ago, and the fence will be done next week hopefully and then all I will have to do for the rest of the summer is sit on the deck and drink.

Well the sprinkler system is in and working and damn is it ever nice.

To anyone thinking about getting one, I would highly recommend contacting Shawn at Liesure Time Sprinklers. Him and every single guy that came out to my place worked thier asses off and did an excellent job. And they stuck to the original quote even though they added two extra heads from the original quote.

Again, very impressed with the system and I'm glad I will never have to manually water my lawn or shrubs again. Oh, and my old sprinkler should have been picked up some time today by the garbage man. :D

just so you know you don't just put in the spriklers and forget about them. You have to pay to get them drained every winter.

just do it the old fashioned way with the single sprinkler and hose and just move it around every so often, easiest way, and a green lawn is what i like to see, not the people that are to lazy and just gravel there front yards:(

You're right.

However I think you can typically do this yourself if you have a compressor because you'll be able to shut off the incoming water, the blow air through the entire system from the inside of the house?

i do yard work for my ortho, he has one of the nicest yards i've ever seen, don't know much about the system, but the brand is Rain Man. He hasn't had any problems with them yet, he's had them for like over 10 years.

Don't worry, I know that already. The company that did the install does it for free the first fall and then charges 70 bucks every fall after that if you use them.

It is a bit too late for this advice.... and it definitely isn't the easiest way.... I have a rather large pie shaped lot and it would require moving the sprinkler several times and the front yard is a retarded shape so it would be hard to water effectively. The system I have has 6 zones and 26 heads and the electric timer takes care of everything. :D Definitely easier than a hose and single sprinkler. And I also hate it when people have nothing but gravel in thier front yards.

And the brand I have is Toro. I heard that Toro and Rain Man were basically the two best commercial brands out there.
