I am trying to set up a network File Shareing and it isn't working... kind of goes with the title hehe
the computers
I have 2 computers (both on XP) linked by a 4 port hub both computers have internet. I have ran the network setup wizard on both, One computer can see the other compter but not access it and the other can't see anything. There are a few folders being shared so that isn't the problem.
The weird thing is that i tried pinging between the 2 and the computer that can't see anything can ping the other but the computer that sees both can't ping the other. Makes no sence to me but i am no expert
neone have any ideas?? |

Are you using a HUB or a Router? If you check the IP addresses on the machines do they have the same sub net address?
To check this go Start> run enter cmd to open a command box.
type ipconfig /all. Look at the following on both.
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
The IP address should be almost the same & the subnet will be the same.
If not try on one machine
ipconfig /release this will clear the address
ipconfig /renew This will try to get a new one.
All this is assuming you are using DHCP and not static IP settings.
Good luck. :) |

go though the network trouble shooter there is a thing in there that will fix ur problem. It hard to explain over the boards but i know it will fix what ur talking about. I have wireless and i wanted to be able to watch movies off my laptop that were saved on my desktop computer. And i had the same issue
try this first
go into run and type {computer name here}{folder name here]
that you are trying to access also make sure that you have the specific folders setup to be shared you can do that by right clicking on the folder and going into properties. Also check your firewalls Norton can be a pain to configure but it is possible. Also check your expectations in windows firewall. Service pack 2 made it a pain in the ass to network with all the firewall crap but its worth it. |

Ok.. let me get this straight.. your computers both have live IP's AKA 142.x.x.x or what ever not private like 192.168.1.1, you turned off the firewall and you want to enable file sharing? Please tell me you atleast have XP pro and are gonna set permissions? cause if your running home.. Oh dear God have mercy on you.
Go to bestbuy or where ever pick up a router, like $30-$50 and save your self a lotta head aches.
Thats the other thing is what are teh I's on both boxes? if they are live IP's just cause they share the same DSL or cable modem doesn't mean they're onthe same subnet. |

ya get a router... try going start - run \\ipaddress\
netbios is not routable which is probably some of the prob if your connected live to the internet. |
