Heat Exchanger on FMIC - Click HERE for Original Thread

LeadSled
My turbo setup is coming together in Tennesee right now, and I have a few parts lying around that I'm not going to use anymore because I am going with forced induction.

Now this is what I'm contemplating. I have a 4000 CFM 16" electric fan and shroud that I am not using for my rad anymore because it won't cool it enough. I am wondering if it would have much benefit mounted to the air to air intercooler. I have seen e fans built for water to air intercoolers on the heat exchanger, but never on an air to air FMIC.

Here's a pic of the mocked up intercooler, the fan is a puller so I'd mount it between the FMIC and regular rads.

Is it worth it or a waste of an E-fan (that I have no use for otherwise) ??

Thanks for any help.

DSM
I have never seen it done so I don't think it has any big advantage.

Note that you will be directing a larger flow of heated air toward the radiator - this could cause cooling problems.
These fans are also designed for use at slower speeds when not enough air is circulated over the engine to cool it. Will the fan be effective when the turbo is spooled and you want it to be effective, or will it actually block airflow as the car gets going fast enough that the airflow is faster than the fan flow?
I would guess that it will not help and may cause overheating, especially at higher rpms.

just leave the ic alone, if you really wanted try a water sprayer. either way sorta a waste as the ic will do a good anough job on its own.

how much boost u plan on running?

LeadSled
I will be running ~8 psi... should be good for 450-500rwhp and 600+ rwtq .

Thats what I kind of figured. Although at high speeds the fan free-wheels so it wouldn't be too much of a restriction. I am just contemplating whether to sell it or not because its a high quality unit :dunno:

Thanks for the input guys. Anyone else heard of this before?

buh_buh
you plan on making 450whp at 8psi?
What are the specs of your turbo?

What kind of car is this?

LeadSled
We are looking at a few right now... Kind of leaning towards the GT40R personally. There's other options like the PT68 also.

It was supposed to be twin GT3076R but there wasn't the room for them.

450rwhp would be a minimum. And its not a car though, thats why all the power is needed to move it lol.

Keith303
so what is it, ram?

LeadSled
I wasn't going to say for fear of ostracizing ;) , but its a 04 Ram RCSB 2x4 with the 5.7L. This engine likes boost even more than an LS1... hoping for 12s this spring on street tires but we'll see. Ran a 14.9 last fall at Budpark with just exhaust and no traction.

DSM
There is some guy in the States with a turbo chev 1500 running 10's. Good luck with the project.

....MT ET streets? :dunno:

You're going to need something mighty sticky to keep something like that from spinning.

Thanks DSM. I like this site because its mostly young guys like myself and quite a few guys running turbos also.

Lol, hope I don't need Et Streets.. Caltracs with grippy 305 width summer tires should be enough :fingersx:

That Chev is owned by somebody named Parish... He's got AWD so he's getting some crazy 60' times, plus he's about 400lb lighter than this truck. I am just hoping to have enough power to dust my cousin's SRT10 and suprise a few F-bodies and Mustangs ( isn't that everyones goal here? lol)

As for the electric fan, I guess it won't hurt to hang on to it. Thanks for the help, now I'll be needing to know where the best dyno/tune shop is in Edmonton :dunno:

No traction at 14.9 with just exhaust and intake + turbo = absolutely no traction for 12s, especially with a 2x4..... nice burnout potential though.

I have seen of few vids of his truck and it is just awesome.

Yeah... but that was on bald 275/55R20 BadYear Eagles and no Caltracs lol. My cousins SRT10 can hook pretty well on 305 Pirelli Scorpions even with 430rwhp. I will get some M&H Radials, I just want to have the power to do it on street tires.

Change of plans with the turbo selection. They want to use a GT42R now.

Here's a GT42R next to a GT28
