I don't know if any of you have heard of this before so here's a breif explanation.

How Grid Computing Works
Grid Computing: The Basics
Grid computing joins together many individual computers, creating a large system with massive computational power that far surpasses the power of a handful of supercomputers. Because the work is split into small pieces that can be processed simultaneously, research time is reduced from years to months. The technology is also more cost-effective, enabling better use of critical funds.

Our first project, Human Proteome Folding, is identifying the proteins produced by human genes. With this information, scientists can understand how defects in proteins can cause disease, making it easier to find cures.

In 2003, with grid computing, in less than three months scientists identified 44 potential treatments to fight the deadly smallpox disease. Without the grid, the work would have taken more than one year to complete.

So if you want to contrubute to science and have a few cpu cycles to spare I think you should give this a try. You can become a member and download the software here.
There are also different teams you can join to take part in a little friendly competition to see how many points and results you can compute. Since making a new team would be pointless if you want to be on top I suggest joining Team Tribalwar . In only 3 months we have quickly climbed the ladder and have recently cracked the top 10 and we are soon to take 9th place by overtaking IBM Innovation Centers. Or goal is to take over 2nd place in the end (Slashdot is too mighty for us) so any help with this would be greatly appreciated. All you have to do is dl the program and it'll run in the background. If you have any questions just ask.

edit: just passed IBM Innovation Centres for 9th, now going after IBM Australia.

And you call me a nerd for playing Halo2 on XBox Live? HAHAHA!!!!

SETI has something very similar to this if I recall correctly.

Mustard
isn't this how the end of the world starts in the Terminator series?

:(

yes SETI does have something like this, there is another term for it which is distributed computing. beowulf clusters work on a similar idea as well where you take multiple PCs and combine them together to process they essentially become a supercomputer on a budget
